I was thinking about the light "fluffy" feeling of fairy kei and now I'm wondering about the feeling of spank/pop kei. Sometimes I feel like my outfit is less fairy more pop, but I'm not sure why. How would you describe it?
I guess spank style is more colourful than pastel, and pop-ish than fluffy? Like rather than a magical-girl outfit, it’s more like an 80s-pop-idol-who-also-happens-to-be-a magical-girl outfit ..?
If it’s feeling a bit spank/pop kei-ish, maybe it isn’t fluffy enough? Like often you need some kind of volume for fairy kei, like a layered dress or tutu or puffy shorts! Spank! style seems to have a tighter silhouette compared to your typical fairy kei outfit!~

Japanese fairy kei fashion designer & Kera Magazine model Moco on the street in Harajuku w/ pink twintails, Magical Girl dress, 6%DOKIDOKI & Angelic Pretty. Moco wants to meet other Magical Girls at the Tokyo Crazy Kawaii Paris event later this month in France!!!
I decorated a few things! The sweater turned out really well, and I hope to get some more of that lace for other things next time I go to the store. I got the bunnies at Dollar Tree.
The guide I followed for the star can be found here. It took me around 1.5~2 hours, but it was my first time, I was distracted while doing it, and think I used a LOT more yarn than the guide did. I’m probably gonna put it on a hair clip.

Here’s a mini guide! Fairy kei on a budget!
1) Get one good main piece and work around it
A good idea is to get a main piece that is quite versatile. Then, you can coord it with lots of cute items, brand and offbrand! I’d recommend a t-shirt (long) for this, as then it can be worn in a few ways with offbrand items:
For example, using this one Listen Flavor shirt, you could tuck it into a cute skirt (this one drawn could be made using a regular skirt, possibly dyed pastel if you can’t find a pastel one, with ribbon hot-glued or sewn on to make a stripe) or some cute flare shorts (which again could be easily DIYed by hot-glueing/sewing lace to the bottom of some shorts)
2) Local stores!
Surprisingly fairy kei items can be found at local stores, for example the pajama section! Often they carry cute pajama bottoms in pastel colours that could be incorporated into a cute fairy coord! For example, while these coords uses Milklim trousers, you could make a similar coord using pajama bottoms! For the second pair, you could make a similar pair by dying/buying pastel jeans and attaching some pastel star beads ♥

You can also usually get cute shoes in local stores, such as sports stores and fast fashion shops, and can easily buy cute accessories in places like Claire’s Accessories or Accessorize (and don’t forget to check out the kids section!)
3) Thrifting!
After DIY, the second heart of fairy kei is resale and vintage items! You can often find cute sweaters, peignoirs, cardigans and more in thrift shops. Unfortunately (or luckily for Americans) these seem to be more prevalent in the USA, but it’s still worth checking out local thrift stores or charity shops to see what you can find! Car boot sales are also good for cute items to make into accessories/decorations, such as vintage polly pockets and care bears.
4) Secondhand sales
There are a few fairy kei sales pages on Facebook where you can find cute items for cheaper, and you can also use eBay or Japanese auction sites like Mbok! (although these require a shopping service)
