week 13: completed task 12

my last open work!!!! this bad boy marked the completion of my semester and im so so happy about it!!!! i feel as though i explored so many new artistic elements this semester and im ready for the next one (after a very very long break!! because i need it!!). this artwork has important aspects to it but i know i can execute it a lot better if i ever want to delve back into it in another part of my life.

next time i will 100000% use my own music for the backing track but for now i just wanted to focus on a song that holds quite a few emotional connections to me (and obviously a subject matter that does too).

after presenting today i have a lot of new angles to come into next semester with and i am beyond proud of myself for completing this class.

week 13: completed task 11

this is my third open task!!!!!! this one by far took the most amount of time as each crochet piece took 1 day minimum (the smalls ones) and the larger ones took 3 days to 1 week to complete.

the plastic bags were simple (and fun) as i could explore a different drawing style to what i was use to (more simplistic). and using coloured pencils was so so fun, i definitely want to draw more in colour as i usually use on graphite/pacer pencils.

for this piece i would’ve hoped to display it differently (and thats the comment i received in my presentations) as it currently just sits as two seperate pieces of work. i have issues integrating mediums and as i hadn't used crochet before i found it especially hard to present everything cohesively. but thats okay!!!! just some things to think of in the future :)))))

week 13: completed task 10

i hadnt seen the full piece all together until today as during the making of this i had elements both at home and at university. now that everything is together and complete i can finally see my idea come to life!!! this work took the second longest amount of time to complete as it had so many different parts to it. i had to first make three seperate clay pots with took 2 hours for the big one and an hour each for the babies. then i had to fire them, paint on them, pot them aaaaaaaand create an entire sketch book, fill it with 18 drawings and find a fitting quote for it.

seeing months worth of work finished and infront of me was so rewarding and i am beyond relived that it is complete (and happy with how it all turned out!!!!!)

week 13: completed Task 9

was so happy to see this work completed and hanging up. it was my original open work and i’m very pleased with the outcome.

i think if i made this at a larger scale or had more than one of them hanging that it would look a little nicer.

materials used: cartridge paper, thread, needles, crochet, crochet hook and wire

weeks four, five and six: tasks 6, 7 & 8 photoshop works |, || & |||

here are all three of my photoshop tasks (the ones i liked the most)

i think the first two are pretty creepy and the last one is simplistic and delicate, i’m not the biggest fan of any of these images/gifs but was happy to learn a new skill as it’ll most likely come in handy some day

week five: task 7 photoshop ||

heres my second photoshop challenge from week 5. here i used what i learnt from the previous week and cut the foot from my original drawing (4hr work, week 1) and copy and pasted it all the way around the spine of the figure. then i fiddled with lighting angles and ended up inverting the image values (3rd image), this one kind of looks like a devil sigil from the 1800′s but its kind of cool.

photoshop is still incredibly frustrating and difficult to navigate, i don’t have many plans to use it in the future as i prefer to have more control over my work

week four: task 6 photoshop |

here is my first photoshop task. i found it incredibly difficult to navigate as i am new to any sort of photoshopping mediums. i decided to start with a simple image (no face, from spirited away) and aimed to try out the majority of the effects as i had no idea what they would do and thought it would be best to just distort an image as much as possible. I mostly used the cutting tools to move his face around and then somehow ended up adding effects and layer filters over the top of each other. i changed the colours on seperate layers and kept the task as loose as possible so i could simply try to figure out photoshop. this is experimental work and i’m now happy with the knowledge i’ve gathered and can hopefully use in my next photoshop task.

week 13: original plan for task 12

here is the final open body work (4). this is a video as i wanted to explore a field of art that i was unfamiliar with. i painted over and over again on a A2 sized page pinned to the wall. After filming a total of 37 minutes i then edited on IMOVIE and attached an emotionally connected song to it (further distorting this song by overlapping the audio).

week 13: original plan for task 11

here is the sketch up for open body 11. it consisted of two large A2 sized cartridge pages totally to 12 plastic bag drawings. i made the bags bright colours to give it a pop art affect and to further tie into the coral piece. the coral (totalling to 9) were all hand crocheted, each in different sizes and colours. the plastic bags and coral are a form of social comment on the current government issues, and the limiting time we have left to act on them.

here is the sketch up for open body 10. this piece had 2 different aspect, the set of 3 clay pots with genitals painted over them along with the plants inside (from my room), and the handmade sketch book filled with 18 drawings of different species leaves and flowers along with a quote relating to the human body and nature.

week 13: Artist Research

Neva Hosking, Four Years, 2018 Neva Hosking is a young female NSW based artist whose only medium of choice is ball point pen and paper (Smith, A. 2018). Hosking is absolutely infatuated with philodendron plants and all sorts of furry animals and always draws from life. This semester I drew lots and lot of leaves for task 10 and was inspired by Hosking’s beautiful plant drawings the entire time. In this piece, titled Four Years, Hosking has drawn herself as the subject, completely immersed by her own plants. The pen on paper effect reminds me of my own drawings that are simply the one medium, graphite. By working in this way, Hosking creates a beautiful yet cluttered image where every piece is sitting on one another as the pen doesn’t allow the image to be broken up into its separate elements. All there is in this piece is Hosking and her plants, and the lack of colour and embellishments allows the viewer to focus purely on the moment captured. Hosking’s approach to art is beautiful, she aims to bring a “stream-of-consciousness” approach to portraiture to better present our own memories (Hosking, N. 2018).. All of the art she makes is incredibly personal and I hope to develop this ideology around my own art.

week 13: task 12

this is the completed version of my open body work 4. this piece focuses on the overwhelming emotions that i am stuck with everyday. it depicts that change from morning to night where i wake up happy and productive and fall asleep emotionally exhausted and distressed. each colour is a new change in emotion, all painted differently to show how they make me feel various types of hopelessness with every change.

the song has a strong connection to me which i explained in another post. for this video i have cut it up and overlaid the audio to create an even more unsettling feeling.

materials used are an A2 piece of cartridge paper and acrylic paints. i have never painted in such a loose abstract way before and i wanted to try to let my emotions take over rather than my mind, here’s the outcome.

week 13: task 12 progress

here is the song i used as audio for task 12, i chose this as my girlfriend showed it to me a while back and the effect it instantly gave me was so intence that i broken down. this song reminds me of my mother with every word, from being alone, to being in hospital to having “to be strong enough for the both of us”

the song hits me so hard and i when i thought of it i was overwhelmed by a number of emotions and wanted to create a piece that uses both sound and image.
