Mr Strange, have you seen what the Society of Magicians has done? They have declared that this day should entirely be dedicated to your wife! I had thought that you would be at the very forefront of such a celebration, but it seems that I was incorrect.

I had every intention of being so, anon. Mrs Strange is entirely worthy of celebration, and I am glad it was recognised by people other than myself. Unfortunately, I was called away at the last minute on business and as such have been unable to take part in the festivities. It is lucky that I don’t need a specific day to celebrate my wife - she is a continual joy. I applaud the Society and it’s excellent members, however - I am sure Arabella is most flattered.

The best part of getting tea was sitting out in plaza and watching people, or so Flora thought. And her father didn’t much care for it because they might run into Mr. Strange, and he was exactly fond of that man. All the more reason to go out and get tea.

As Flora sipped from her cup, she spotted the distasteful Mr. Strange himself. “Mr. Strange!” Flora called, standing and waving. Leaving her father’s protests behind, Flora weaved through the crowd to join Mr. Strange. “Where are you off to?”

Jonathan had not heard Miss Greysteel's initial call - or perhaps he had, these days it was very difficult to tell - so her appearance at his side prompted something of a start. He glanced around - although it was a rather more full-bodied gesture than a mere glance - in case her father was looming (he had something of a propensity to do so). He could not see him in their immediate vicinity, though a similar looking gentleman was glaring at them from across the plaza.

“Just a little way over there.” he waved very vaguely in a direction that was away.

Jerusalem - I spent a lot of time studying the Middle East during my degree and it’s made me pretty desperate to visit the sort-of-source of so much faith and so many problems

New York  - THEATRE

San Ġwann, Malta - I’m half Maltese, it’s where most of my family live and I miss them.

Egypt - which I know isn’t nearly a specific enough answer, but I just want to see all the ancient sites and travel around a bit and I don’t know how to describe it. It was a childhood dream that has sort of stuck around.

Henry had told her - though warned would perhaps have been a better word - that Jonathan was due home imminently. He had been off entertaining himself in his usual manner in Bath or somewhere similar, and she had not needed her older brother’s pointed words to know to expect a visit from him upon his return to Shropshire.

It would have been a barefaced lie had she claimed not to be at least a little happy at the thought of seeing him again, feckless and aimless though he most certainly was. Not that she would let him in on that particular piece of information - or anyone else, for that matter, should he come up in conversation.

Arabella had developed rather a good line in stock phrases to use when one of the parishioners mentioned him, and the sort of good-natured but lightly dismissive air with which to say them that she hoped would disguise the genuine affection she held for him. It was with this tone that she greeted him, only looking up from the sketch on her lap after he had spoken.

“Good afternoon, Mister Strange. I had heard a rumour that you were to be returning to us.” She offered him a smile, then - fleeting and small, but undeniably warm.

He was momentarily surprised by the idea of ‘rumours’ of his return, before remembering that in an area such as this anything could become rumour, or be referred to as one. Rumour could mean anything from ‘someone whispered it to me in confidence’ to ‘I heard it from my brother but I’m being coy’ - he hoped it might be fair to suspect the latter.

Arabella’s smile lit up the room, and he found his mouth responding in kind.

“I’m glad I do not come without warning - otherwise I should feel that I had imposed.”

Jonathan looked up from his book with rather a start. He hadn’t quite expected this to work, let alone present him a live being that had to be dealt with. The last time he’d tried to summon any sort of fellow sorcerer, it had been an unmitigated failure. In fact, the only time he’d managed anything of the sort he’d been asleep, and it had been interrupted by John Segundus. It just wasn’t the sort of magic one needed every day.

His surprise was very quickly replaced with a sense of self-congratulation and a little bravado - of course it had worked! Now there was simply the issue of what to do with the woman standing before him. 

She was a little shorter than he, and her skin was tinged with a little green - although he suspected that had more to do with the somewhat substandard lighting prospects in the dank little room. (He cursed them silently. I really must find somewhere better for this.) The woman was dressed all in back from her head to her feet, and perched upon her head was a tall, pointed, black hat that seemed to have scales. And she appeared more than a little annoyed.

He hadn’t expected a woman, though. It was supposed to be an obscure and somewhat forgotten 13th century expert in plants. Most perplexing. 

Still, must be friendly.

“Hello there. I don’t suppose you’re a particular expert on the language of flowers, are you?”

But [Jonathan Strange] had some doubts about the friends with whom she was staying. They were a clergyman and his wife. He knew nothing of them, but he had the natural distrust that a young, rich, self indulgent man feels for members of the clergy. Who could say what notions of extraordinary virtue and unnecessary self-sacrifice they might be daily imparting to her?
