"copying" in graphic design world has a negative stigma, plagiarism. but "copying" actually has a wider dimension and realities. as a graphic designer, the understanding of "copying" could remind us to not easily comfortable with a very literal plagiarism, so we could be triggered to always develop and enhance our ability of "copying" to a higher level.

Design is not sterile from the subjectivity, designer is involved in problem manipulation, and design is a form to deliver any content in a specific context.
Design is art is design. Design derives from technical study, design derives from esthetical study. What differs art and design is money; design is always commercial while art sometimes not. Art could be found in everyday activity, but it is not always designed, especially when it is about unknown unclaimed power which moves everything.
Design and art comes from individual expression, as little as the preferences of what good and not. Although there’s communal preferences, in the end, the designer and the artist is the final executor of the work.
Arts could have a client, as design mostly is. Clients are there to put a context of a problem that needs to be designed as one of the solutions of the problem, the only problem that could be solved by the designer is only the visual problem.
Design and art is designed, as little as the plan of the next strokes. Design and art have the social functions, as they feed from the same social occurrences around the designer and the projects.
I guess design is not an “applied” art, design is a part of art that always has a commercial purpose whether it is stated in the end or in the beginning; whether it is sold by the designer itself or another pirate and criminals or another humens; whether the purpose itself is mutated; and will be destroyed and becomes the abyss in a war and sudden meteor shower.
While design is not dependent with beauty, like any other things in the werld, I think beauty is personal preference. Design and art may have confused the idea of beauty, while shaping it like any other business to drag a collective idea of something, to be more or less dragging people to buy a lot of things they do not need. Everything can be beautiful by someone, and ugly for another. What designers supposed to do is planning the composition of elements of design and the harmony of the design project, impression of beauty is just a bonus from client and target audience. Designing something without the aim of beauty is not always designing something to be ugly. If the aim of design is only beauty or ugly, then you could hire anyone and pay every mouths in the werld to say that it is beautiful to pay it a statistically “collective” beauty concept. I think design is just another way to shape an idea, the rest is just plan and the final artwerk is just a product of the whole process, and a plan is a plan. Final artwerk is also not a game, it has nothing to do with winning or losing, but it has to do justice for everything and everyone involved to be called “appropriate design”, and in this way, nothing will be un-beautiful.
Designers could choose whatever style they think is suitable and appropriate for the project, with a lot of consideration and personal preference. Designers might stick into a specific style of preference in all the projects or the other way. The identity of the designer is in the preference and the consideration, that is shaping the form, content and the context of the design; rather than only form, only content or only context.
As an addition to what Steven Heller has said, designers not only have 3 main responsibilities, but 4 responsibilities: / To society - morality and norms appropriateness in the practice of design (collective, utilitarian) / To profession - ethical attitudes of the practice of design (collective, utilitarian) / Artistic - the complete consideration and preference to complete a project, in other term, the technical design process (collective & personal) / To themselves as human - all done with the fairness principle to themselves, others and universe (collective & personal)
I think designers are not a superhuman, designers are just another kind of humen being, what designers do may have to be fair just like another humen; cause just like another humen, designers will be destroyed and becomes the abyss in a war and sudden meteor shower.
Note: Humen is my own term for plural human.
