I first began my journey working alongside Lord Poseidon as a twelve year old, before growing in my practice and beliefs. I am currently in the process of getting set up with schooling for Classical Studies, Anthropology, and Archaeology- with a focus in Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations. I am hoping to find like minded individuals, further my craft, and assist in the preservation and reigniting of modern hellenic polytheism.

Prayer beads - Aphrodite

A compilation of different hymns with a prayer bead template to pray to Lady Aphrodite

Introduction

This post is a small template for a prayer bead setup that you can make, along with some basic hymns assigned to each bead for a quick prayer session. This is a post made for Aphrodite, but I liked how it turned out, so in my practice I may end up applying the bead setup for other deities along with hymns dedicated to them, you are free to do so as well! Get creative!

I have been dedicating every Friday to Aphrodite, to have a special day of connection to her. I used to have a routine that's not been working in the past few weeks, so I decided to create this setup.

It's ideal for quick prayer sessions, its design is portable and made to fit 1-3 fingers to hold while praying, and you can make it with cheap materials! Even without the prayer beads, you are absolutely free to follow the prayer setup if you like it.

The Beads

This is a schematic drawing I made of the beads (I know it belongs in the Louvre but Tumblr is all I can afford).

Circle bead -> You start here. It can be a symbol that you associate with Aphrodite, in my case I have one in the shape of a shell.

Drop-shaped bead -> This connects the previous bead with the loop and it's where you may finish when you do the whole loop. Again, it can be whatever you like that you may associate with her.

Yellow and blue beads -> My personal recommendation is making them different colors, or better yet, textures to differentiate well when you are reading the hymns so you don't have to look at your hands if you get lost.

The Prayers

I selected and divided them following PDFs I found on the Internet, so the verses may be a bit wonky, that's why I chose to not copy them here.

Circle bead -> Homeric hymn 6/VI to Aphrodite, v. 1-18. (About her birth in Cyprus)

Drop-shaped bead -> Homeric hymn 5/V to Aphrodite, v. 292. (Small verse of her as queen of Cyprus)

5 yellow beads -> Orphic hymn 55/LV to Aphrodite, divided in 5 by me:

v. 1-6.

v. 7-12.

v. 13-23.

v. 24-32.

v. 33-41.

4 blue beads -> No hymn or set prayer. You can use these beads to thank the goddess for her blessings, to ask for help or guidance, to talk to her, breathe and meditate, whatever you may like. I think the most important part of prayer is connecting with the deity in a way that feels meaningful to you in that moment, so this is the time for it. A good time to put in practice memorising epithets to go with your prayers.
