Rio's life has always been defined by extremes. Raised between periods of chaos at home and relative stability in foster care with the Martinez family, she learned early on that peace rarely lasted.
Her father did everything he could to hold their family together, but her mother's worsening mental illness often left destruction in its wake. When things finally reached a breaking point, her father made a desperate decision and took Rio back to the Dominican Republic without her mother's consent, uprooting her life once again.
The years that followed were steadier in some ways, but no less turbulent. Over time, Rio grew accustomed to living on the edge of uncertainty, finding comfort in the very instability that once threatened to swallow her whole. The constant highs and lows became familiar, even necessary, shaping her into someone who feels most alive when the stakes are high.
After her father's death when she was twenty-five, Rio returned to New York determined to reconnect with the life she left behind.
She found her mother, made peace where she could, and built a career with the FDNY as a firefighter. On the side, she works as a medic for the Contingency, funneling every extra dollar toward her mother's care.
