“ I have a vague idea,” John says as softly and as calmly as he can.  Hand remains held out as if trying to signify that he meant no harm, whether or not she believed that wasn’t looking very promising.  

A number of mutants he’d run into were scared of nervous.  Some of them even tried throwing their abilities in his direction.  It came with the territory and he understood what pushed them to act that way.  “Why don’t we sit down and talk about it?  I’m pretty durable.  You can’t hurt me.”
