sometimes the marvel fandom gets to be too much for me.  i don’t want to go into it but it’s a big reason why i disappear sometimes.  i love steve and i want to come back.  with my bae back on tumblr i’ve been inspired to give this kid yet another chance.

“Don’t close your eyes, stay awake!”

          He was trying.  He was really trying.  But, the bullet wounds were making it hard.  With the battle over the adrenaline that kept him moving was slowly starting to dissipate.  Every bone was getting heavier.  Every breath into his lungs burned a little more.  The important part was that he’d made it to the end.  

           “ I’m okay, “ Steve swallows past the metallic lump in his throat.  A smile stretches one side of his lips.  Anything to ease the other’s worries.  He’d be okay, one way or another.  He always was.         

          Gathering what strength he had left, the soldier slowly tolls to the side and pushes himself up so he can lean on the nearby wall.  Everything hurt, which wasn’t unusual for a fight.  Something about this pain left Steve feeling abnormally tired, though.

           “ Go see if anyone else needs help.  I’ll be fine. “

falling asleep at the desk wasn’t a new thing for natasha , during those five years . that was all anyone walked in on half the time , natasha curled up in her chair , ready for the next call but exhausted out of her mind . and nothing changed when rogers brought her back with the return of the soul stone . except this time , when she slept , she was plagued with darkness , a crushing compressor on her heart . sucking the air from her lungs as she struggled too find a way back home . natasha whimpered in her sleep , her hand twitching as she forced herself back to the land of the living . tears glistened her green eyes , the twitching hand grabbing the fabric that lay over her chest , gasping for air . “ fuck , ” she muttered in russian , looking to her left she saw rogers and groaned . here came the are you okay talk which she had been avoiding from everyone . “ i’m fine rogers , ” try to beat him to the punch , see how that works out for you .  @timeforgcd / / post - endgame pain 

         Insomnia was an old friend.  Taking a page out of Sam’s book to help others cope with the loss of pain hadn’t changed that fact.  There were still nightmares every time he closed his eyes.  Of the ice.  Of Bucky.  Of all his friends turning to dust right before his very eyes.  It started with the war and never quite went away.  So, whenever he noticed Natasha sleeping in a chair his heart grew a little heavier.

          They’d been through so much together.  Steve couldn’t even begin to imagine what it was like for her on Vormir.  To come back the way she did and to continue the fight.  His respect for her grew more and more every day.  To make sure she could get what little sleep she could, Steve sat in a nearby chair with a book resting against one folded leg.  If anyone came near or if anyone tried to call he could deter them until Natasha was awake.  Mutters and quiet whimpers had the soldier pinching his eyebrows together.  As much as he wanted to help he knew better than anyone there was only so much to be done about the nightmares that came with their line of work.

          When she wakes, there’s an emphasis on how fine she is before the words can skate past his lips.  There’s a small smile as rough fingers slowly shut the pages together.  “ None of us are really fine after the past few years.  Sometimes, if I exhaust myself enough, I can sleep for a few hours without seeing anything.  Do you want to talk about it? “
