CLARIFICATION: For your fieldwork this week, you’re expected to find NEWS articles that REPRESENT the theories of Marx, Weber, and Bourdieu. NOT post articles that directly discuss the theories/theorists. Ex: Marx’s theory on class inequality can be represented in a news article about COVID-19 testing and how certain social classes do not have access to tests or treatment. Briefly, but adequately, explain how the article relates to the theory. 1 article for each theorist. If you did not do it this way, feel free to redo the assignment. If not, that will be reflected in your grade for this fieldwork. This assignment requires you to be aware of current events, your community, and your overall environment. Good luck!

American Farming Runs on Exploitation

Climate change isn't the only reality the USDA's been slow to grapple with.

This article represents Karl Marx theory because it is an example of the lower, working class being exploited by the companies they work for. The farmers talked about in this article received the exact same treatment of the working class Marx talked about. These farmers are going through struggles of not being paid fair and stable wages, not being about to join unions, and having unsafe living conditions for workers they hired. This of course all was happening while they were doing hard and potentially dangerous work.

This article represents bourdieu’s theory because it talks about the resources giving to the children of the working class. It was discovered that the children of the working class did not get an equal education to kids of parents in the upper class. The wealth and inclination of the child’s parents determined how good of an education they would get. They receive less resources and teachers that aren’t as qualified, thus making it much harder for them to have opportunities for social class mobility.

This article repsrwdent weber’s therory because it talks about the advantages the wealthy have in order to live a healthy and happier life or better life chances. The article talks about how the wealthy not only have better healthcare and access to funds when they do get sick, they have the ability to have a healthier lifestyle and engage in activities that improve your health. The lower class may not have the access to healthier food options or out of school activities because of the amount of money you need to sustain these things or even get them in their area of living.

My kinship diagram includes my family and my extended family. My father and his wife both passed 2017.My sister and I are his only children, he didn’t have any children with his wife, my dads side of the family is really small both of his siblings are married only his sister has children, twos girls on boy. My dad mom and dad are both deceased they were married for 60+ years, my grandma lived until she was 95. My mother on the other hand has five children 4 girls and 1 boy including me. My mother also has many siblings 9 in total from her mother and 4 more from my her fathers which includes 13 aunts and uncles which mean I have a lot of cousins. Two of my mom sister’s passed back to back. Some of my mom siblings are married and some are not.I didn’t include all spouse, sibling and cousin on my moms side because it’s just too many. I also have a niece and nephews from my siblings and a lots of second cousins. All are Baltimore natives

This is my kinship diagram. I have a large family. My mom has six siblings, so does my dad but the space was too small to add my dad’s sister. My biological father actually died just before I was born but thankfully my mom got remarried to my amazing stepDAD when I was 4. I have more parallel cousins than cross cousins. Even though we’re a large family, we’re still close and we always have a family party at the beginning or end of every year. I’m the first grandchild from my mom’s side but I have older cousins from my dad’s side. I share a close relationship with all my cousins (I’m very friendly). My dad’s parent are dead but my mom’s parents are still very strong. I have a great grandma (I didn’t include that in the diagram but she’s my mom’s father’s mother). I’m the first child so my parents are still quite young. That’s all about my LARGE family.

Chapter 10 Kinship & Family

This is my family diagram, it starts with my mother and father. My mother has two brothers and two sisters and from them they have a combined (nine) children. My father has four sisters and from them they have a combined 8 children. Because my father only has sisters I only have cross cousins from that side of the family. I have two sisters so my nieces and nephews will only have cross cousins as it relates to me. My family is in my opinion small and my cousins and I seem so distant..

Kinship & Family Fieldwork

This diagram includes my family and my extended family. My father does not have any siblings and his father passed while he was young so he does not have siblings. But, his wife brought some siblings into the family. My mother on the other hand, has two siblings my aunt and uncle. Both in which have children. I do not really have much of a close relationship with most of my family. So there is not much to say about them.

These are your final three Fieldwork Assignments for the Spring of 2020. The due dates are below. Feel free to submit them early!!!

1) Kinship & Family

 Using the key, construct a kinship diagram for your (extended) family showing AT LEAST 10 relationships. First, upload a photo of your diagram. Second, analyze your diagram. Families are more than lines on a family tree. Families represent stories, interesting people, power, even mysteries. What story does your family tree tell? Full instructions are on p. 372-373 of your textbook. Due Sunday night, April 4th at 11:59 pm

2)  Social Class & Inequality

Find 3 news stories that illustrate Marx’s, Weber’s, and Bourdieu’s of social class (one article per theorist). Post a link to each story and do a brief write up ( a paragraph each) that explains how the story illustrates social class using the selected theorist’s concepts. Be sure to focus on social class, not race!  Due Sunday night, April 12th at 11:59 pm

3) The Price of Sugar

Watch the Film The Price of Sugar and write a critical analysis. Use at least 10 concepts from the textbook to write your analysis. Be sure to bold each concept that you use. You may use concepts from the chapters on Migration, Race, Class, Global Inequality, Politics and Power or any other chapter to substantiate your paper. Your paper should be 3-6 paragraphs. Please proofread, making sure that it is grammatically correct, free of typos and well-organized. Due Sunday night, April 19th at 11:59 pm

Fieldwork Assignment - Chapter 8

After reading Chapter 8, you should be familiar with the processes by which children are taught gender norms and values. Cultural institutions, including schools, churches, and even governments, all inundate us with messages about gender values throughout our lives, but there is another cultural institution that has far more influence on modern American children: television. As children watch cartoons on TV, they are inundated with ads for toys and other products. Many of these ads present explicit gender roles, thereby further enculturating children with values and norms. For this exercise you will watch Saturday morning cartoons and make a log of the commercials aired during those cartoons. Note what each commercial is for, whether the product is gendered, and if so, in what way.

Instructions: Complete and then submit the exercise(s) below as directed by your instructor.

Post a summary of your observations to your tumblr blog answering the following questions: How many commercials were aimed at boys? How many at girls? Were any commercials not gendered? What techniques did the ads use to attract boys or girls? In what ways do these commercials teach gendered behavior? After reading your classmates' posts, consider whether it is natural that "boys will be boys" or if we actively create gender roles.
