I first saw this kitchen towel from Vestiges Inc. at the Maine Historical Society store and love it! Georgia to Maine, just like me! Although via I-95, not the AT.
The Italian(ate) Stallions! Portland has no shortage of Italianate-style houses of all shapes and sizes. These babies were very popular for single and multi-family residences in the late 1800s. I’m constantly oggling the brackets, so I’ve decided to start a collection. I snapped 24 on just my 10-minute walk home through the Western Prom. Sure to be many more to come!
Last night was the annual Historic Gala to raise funds for Greater Portland Landmarks. Held at Greenwood Gardens on Peaks Island, a short ferry ride from Portland, the theme was 1920s Victorian/outdoorsy/rusticator...think lots of straw hats and wool. Along with being a wonderful night with an amazing sunset, it was an opportunity to see charity events in action. I learned a lot about how live and silent auctions and event-planning work, as well as put into action that old southern hospitality that Sea Island engrained in me (“Y’all enjoy your evening!”).
I’ll be honest...house museums are not usually my thing. Which is ironic considering that’s often the first thing that comes to mind when I people hear that I’m in the historic preservation field. This speaks to the evolution of preservation and how we are working to go beyond the typical conceptions to create a more dynamic, inclusive, and adaptive approach.
The Maine Historical Society is right now the street from Greater Portland Landmarks, so today the interns took a field trip to investigate their special collections library and tour the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow house museum. We were actively looking for the “do not touch” signs once we realized they all had cheeky sayings! MHS also currently has an exhibition on food culture, production, and history in Maine. Not pictured is me sitting in the life-size Ham Italian sandwich that Mainers take great pride in (it sounds just like a normal ham sandwich but I can’t knock it until I try it). In addition to the jumbo plush sandwich (a brilliant idea to encourage social media posts) there were also several tactile displays, including a “guess the smell.” It was a great to see how they’re taking museum interpretation and having fun with it to engage visitors.
Preservation is not just about keeping old buildings around. It is about keeping them alive, in active use, and relevant to the needs of the families and the cities that surround them. We do not honor historic buildings in our midst, nor those who once inhabited them, by trapping these structures in amber or sequestering them away behind velvet ropes. We do it by working to see that they continue to play a vibrant role at the heart of the community.

When life gets hectic or I know there’s too much to sort through, my posts drop off. It’s been a consistent pattern over the past few years of this blog...but at least there’s consistency, right?
I’m in Portland, Maine for the summer to intern with Greater Portland Landmarks. The photos above are from our tour today of the Sisters of Mercy “Motherhouse” that has been sold to a developer and is being converted into residential units through the use of layered financing tactics, including historic tax credits. The amount of detail that still remains is amazing and a testament to the power of creatively looking at historic projects and finding ways to blend the past with current needs.
Things I’ve been avoiding posting due to the sheer volume of photos and activities to sort include (but probably aren’t limited to): our class trip to Savannah; spring break in Austin; a two-week Maymester in Costa Rica; ongoing adventures in Maine; and a weekend in Boston. More to come as I catch up!
Preservation is about keeping buildings alive, in active use, and relevant to the needs of the people and the cities that surround them.

The demolition of historic buildings is the polar opposite of sustainable development; once they are razed, they cannot possibly be available to meet the needs of future generations. In a world filled with rights movements, historic preservation is a responsibility movement-responsibility toward our environment, responsibility toward our economy, and responsibility toward our social and cultural lives.

Views from a recent day trip to Tallulah Gorge State Park, just 1.5 hours north of Athens
My tip to make the most out of your trip there (a.k.a. what I wish we had done) is to arrive early enough to get a permit to hike to the gorge floor. They only give out 100 on a first-come, first-serve basis every day. Otherwise, there are a limited amount of trails available and they were very crowded.
And go prepared to climb up and down a lot of stairs...this park is nature’s StairMaster!

While not as protective as a local historic district, conservation overlays can be a partial solution in areas where district designation is too contentious, as I believe is the case in Ardsley Park.
Helping Athens-Clarke County with the designation process for two new historic districts has opened my eyes to the passion sparked by the proposition...both for and against it. A lot of the opposing opinions we hear can be chalked up to the spread of misinformation, including the classic, “I don’t want to be told what color to paint my house.” It’s a powerful reminder that the designation process is just as much about education and PR as it is preservation.
Historic buildings are the physical manifestation of memory.
