An Open Letter to FIT Freshmen
Congratulations! You are now a college student. But not a ātypical college studentāāyouāre a FIT College Student. As Iām entering my last year, I thought Iād give you lucky little birds some advice that I hope will make your time at FIT worth while!
So here we goā
1. Schedule your classes twice a week. I donāt know why students feel compelled to take ONE class everyday. It is very possible to take 6 classes in two days, especially if youāre in a business AAS program (Iāve done it). If you decide to take classes twice a week, take them on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most events take place on these days, and we have common hour where you can go to club meetings. This leaves the rest of week open for you to intern, work, workout, study, and party!
2. Use the resources available! I really cannot express this enough. We have an awesome career database, where they update with paid internships, freelance jobs and full/part time positions. I found my Louis Vuitton internship through this portal, as well another internship, a part time job and my current position at V Magazine.
Visit the Career center and develop a relationship with a counselor who can email you internship opportunities. Attend speaking events and go to the career fair and network. Iāve met some pretty amazing people who have opened doors that I myself could not open.
LinkedIn is also another resource to use. I found my first internship at Prada through here. Add professionals in your desired field. Its also a good way to get direct emails. (Example- Jane Doe works at Louis Vuitton. Her email would most likely be [email protected])
3. Intern. Please do not wait until your senior year to do an internship. This is New York City. There are thousands of opportunities for you to gain experience. If you decide to do an unpaid internship, please educate yourself on the laws regarding this. Set a two day limit. Do not let these folks abuse you. While you are interning, make sure you network and develop relationships with your supervisor and those in the department. I credit my success to my old supervisor. He was an amazing reference and mentor.
4. Take Care of Yourself. This is very important. With the stress of the City, school, work or your internship, you may find your health slipping. FIT has a gym. Try going once or twice a week. They also have free workout classes you should take advantage of. There are hundreds of health related classes you can find around the City as well. Buy healthy groceries! Trader Joeās is a short walk from campus. Unfortunately, the food FIT is not the best, so have a few healthy alternatives stored in your dorm room. Most importantly, please remember to drink water and get at least 6-10 hours of sleep. Netflix, clubs/bars will always be there.
5.Upgrade āyo taste. Iām completely aware that a lot of those attending FIT are not affluent. Iām a poor soul myself. But please do not waste your money shopping at Forever 21 or H&M. You will find yourself constantly replacing your clothes. Unlike most college students, you are considered a walking professional at FIT. You should dress accordingly. Iām not saying to splurge on designer, but try shopping at places that offer better clothing material for a little bit more. COS, Madewell, & Other Stories, TopShop, Zara, ASOS.com, Everlane.com, Industrystandardny.com, and dorothyperkins.com are some places that offer better clothing. You will quickly learn at FIT what I mean by 'betterā.
6. ā¦While youāre upgrading, remember to be yourself! Itās so important to remember that there is no one on this Earth like you. You will begin to see and feel the pressures of living in NYC and attending FIT. There is an unspoken 'standardā. But if you want to go class everyday in sweats, do you. If you want to strut your in 6 inch Loubs, donāt let anyone stop you. Just keep in mind that you never know who you may run into on campus, and itās always good to put your best foot forward. I met June Ambrose one day on campus and I almost considered skipping make up and throwing this hideous wrap around my hair. Iām glad I didnāt.
7. Make some friends. Be kind to everyone you meet. You never know! That girl down the hall from you may be interning at your dream company and can hook you up. Your roommate could be the best wing girl ever for your nights out. That quiet kid in your class could be the best study buddy. Your suite mates might become your off campus roommates! You simply never know. If you live off campus like I do, you may find making friends a bit harder, but itās still possible! Join clubs, compliment a stranger! You may find one day that even though there are millions of people in New York City, you are incredibly lonely. Donāt let be you. Itās awful.
8. Bring your charger everywhere and wear comfortable shoes. Self explanatory.
9. If youāre going to go out, please be careful. I was drugged once at a club. Itās not fun. But I had an amazing friend who took Ā me all the way to Brooklyn. If youāre going to go out, please make sure youāre with trustworthy people. Limit the amount of alcohol you intake. Donāt be the sloppy girl/guy. You donāt even need to be drunk to have fun here. Itās actually fun to remember the things you do out here. Wild concept, huh? If youāre going to get a fake, donāt pay over $100 for one. 75% chance youāll get it taken away one night, and you can even go to jail for carrying around someoneās identity. Itās not worth it. There are a million things to do here. Clubbing is just one of them.
10. Spend your time wisely here. Four years will fly by very quickly. Make sure you accomplish as much as you can here. Network as much as possible. Gain quality experience. Take your classes seriously. Build relationships with your professors. You will graduate from FIT with more experience and knowledge than your counterparts who went to a normal 4 year and spent their time rushing Greek and attending parties. Take advantage of New York City, you little freshmen!
I hope this helps one of you lovely souls out there! Good luck to all of you!
If you have any questions, feel free to message me, Or we can meet for tea. Iām hilarious in real life. ;)
Wow, this is really amazing! Ā Michael Kors is so generous!

Hello.Ā My name is Edna, I stay home and sew on Friday nights instead of going out like a normal college kid.Ā
Things You Only Experience in a Fashion School
It has only been a week of proper academic classes and meeting everyone who is going to IM, and I have the impression that this place would be an utter mindfuck for anyone who doesnāt have this fashion-brain-thing going on that we (they?) all do. Even I feel like Iām too rational for this sometimes and this whole place is fucking surreal.Ā
They rarely compliment you but when they do, itās the best thing that ever happened to you. It happened to me like three times so far. Each time felt heavenly.
You see it on Tumblr, they wear it the very next day.Ā And that also happened to me. It was actually one of my friends. Iāve seen this amazing jacket from like a probably barely-available random designer here on Tumblr one night, and the next morning she was wearing it.Ā
You will never go to school without makeup and in your PJs again.Ā Because everyone looks so humiliatingly gorgeous compared to you, even when you try.Ā
You have the meanest thoughtsĀ about people who donāt look like they just walked out of the latest maje look book because they are just soā¦inappropriate. And yes I do feel bad every time the question āwhat isĀ sheĀ doing in a fashion school?ā pops into my mind.Ā
Male students = unicorns. Donāt even think about straight guys. A direct consequence of this is falling in love with the first straight man you see in the buildingĀ (a.k.a. the first male who doesnāt have better eyebrows than you), namely your communication & negotiation teacher.
You watch The Devil Wears Prada in class.Ā Iām not even kidding. That happened on Tuesday.Ā Ā
