A/N - I'm back, and with a new fic format too!! I hope this was worth the wait! This fic takes place after the Voyage of Oceanus event's epilogue. While I do recommend reading the wiki page for this event, I think this can still be enjoyed without knowing what happens in it. Here's some things to know though:
Mr. Inference [aka Naib] has gone undercover and goes by Mr. Collector. In this fic, he won't be referred to as Naib, so I hope y'all don't mind!!
Ms. Taxidermist is Emily, and Mr. Benefactor is Frederick.
Your cabin door shuts with a small click behind you. Turning around, you're greeted with moonlight streaking across the wooden floor, illuminating the space with a soft glow. Including the notes strewn across the small round table and the crate settled at its legs. It's a mess that will be dealt with. Just not tonight.
Walking over to your bed, you kick off your boots and unceremoniously flop onto it. The comforter wraps itself around you in a warm embrace. After what felt like an eternity of trying to find the cure to something you couldn't even name, nights like this were appreciated.
The Oceanus has never been quieter. Not that it was a bad thing. Just days ago, many passengers aboard had fallen ill. You and Ms. Taxidermist had done your best to help but even with the medicines available onboard, graciously funded by Mr. Benefactor himself, none had been effective in curing anyone.
Yet, by some miracle, everyone managed to recover before the ship reached the port earlier today. Maybe it was the abnormally stormy seas in this area, or something more nefarious in nature... Well, what's done is done. At least now you can finally take a break.
Your eyelids begin to feel heavy; your mind starts to slow down. The thought of moving is the last thing you want to do. You could take the extra step to slip under the covers, but the comforting pull of rest holds you and you don't want to let go. Then you hear a dull knock against wood. Maybe it's your neighbour's door? You stay put.
Two more knocks. Louder but not enough to be aggravating. They're definitely knocking on your door. Yet, you shut your eyes tighter as if that would get you to sleep in the next five seconds. That, or the mystery person at your door calls it a night. Both work. Silence hangs heavily within your cabin and outside it. Either they walked away, or there's about to be a break-in.
"Doctor?"
Your eyes shoot open. You know that voice but you find it hard to believe that its owner is the one standing outside your door. The impossibly pretty man you've seen around onboard yet never spoken to. The one Ms. Taxidermist caught you looking at a couple of times. Okay, maybe more than a couple of times. "I'm aware it's late, but if you're still awake, I'd... really appreciate your expertise."
The speed you bounced off the bed and opened the door was quick. Embarrassingly so. But it's not everyday the prettiest man on the Oceanus asks for your help. Even if you were about to sleep. If Mr. Collector noticed how swiftly the door had swung open, he doesn't show it. He gives you a polite nod in greeting. You give him a once over, noticing that one of his hands were ungloved. Redness bloomed across the skin. "A jellyfish sting?"
Your eyes linger for a second longer before moving up to meet his gaze. He looks relatively unbothered but the downturn of his mouth seems almost... sheepish. "Unfortunately, this is my second." The collector admits. "I stopped by the gallery to rinse the area off with vinegar, but I don't have the necessary tools to deal with it myself."
Stepping out of the way, you close the door behind him and pull the chair out from the round table. He wordlessly sits down. Looking under the piles of papers scattered around, you manage to find a pair of tweezers. Mr. Collector offers you his hand and you carefully take it by the wrist. His gloved hand finds purchase on the edge of the seat's armrest.
"This may hurt," You warn as you kneel down. You could've sworn you saw his eyes widen but he looks away before you can fully determine it. "I've been through worse. This'll be nothing I can't handle." And to his credit, he's right. As you carefully remove the tentacles nestled in his hand, he doesn't flinch. Not even once. The man is either a regular to getting stung by jellyfish or he's actually been through worse.
Curiosity squirms in the back of your mind but you keep it there. Itās not your place to ask. A part of you hopes heāll elaborate another time anyway. You continue with your meticulous ministrations. Mr. Collectorās eyes flick to down to watch you work, then to the crate sitting at your left.
Eventually the last tentacle gets plucked out. āYou really werenāt joking about being able to handle it,ā You muse as you scoot backwards. The crate gets pulled up to your knees, and you begin to dig through its contents. āIām as impressed as I am slightly concerned.ā He lets out a soft, amused huff in response. A small smile forms on your lips.
However, it swiftly becomes a frustrated frown. You canāt find the box you need. Everythingās labeled neatly but all the words are blurring together. You blame it on the small print and the moon being further behind you now. Youāre so focused on your search, you donāt notice that he had stood up. With an apology on the tip of your tongue, you look up to apologize to him.
Only to be met with the sight of him getting down onto one knee across from you.
The golden pendants of his necklace rhythmically clink together as he moves. It's oddly soothing; enough to water down your frustration. You doubt itās his, as everyone had their outfits provided by the Benefactor, but youād be lying if you said it didnāt fit him. Before you can snap out of your staring, his gloved hand gives you a light tap on your forehead.
You shake your head and meet the collectorās eyes. A glimmer of something is in his gaze but the same gloved hand reaches into the crate and immediately raises a box in between your faces. āHydrocortisone. This is what youāre looking for, right?ā You nod. The brunette moves the crate out of the way as he hands you the box. You open it, and the tube slides out.
Squeezing out its contents onto the back of his hand, you take it into yours and gingerly rub the cream in with your thumbs. āIāll give this to you. Whenever your hand feels itchy or inflamed, you can use it.ā He pockets the tube and stands up. You follow suit. āThank you.ā He says as you open the door for him.ā āNo problem. Itās my job after all, Mr. Collector.ā The man stops and appears to contemplate something for a few moments.
āMr. Inference.ā
You know what heās trying to say but it doesnāt register in your brain. He realizes your plight, so he clarifies. āYou may call me Mr. Inference. The experience is finished so we can use our actual names now.ā An understanding hum escapes you. āLet me guess ā youāre a detective?ā
āA good guess, and a correct one too. I am indeed.ā His confirmation makes you want to tell him your name. So, you do. Hearing him repeat it almost makes you fall to your knees. He steps out into the dim hallway. āHave a good night. After the past couple of days, I believe you deserve it most of all." The way he drops that on you then proceeds to walk away is undoubtedly baffling.
Did he always say things like that so casually, or was there something more to it? Maybe thatās why you donāt stop yourself from acting on that curiosity. A newfound sense of courage fills you as you step out of your cabin. āMr. Inference?ā You call out as loud as you can without waking any of the other crew members up. He fully turns around to face you.
His baby blue eyes shine beautifully thanks to the moonlight shining through the circular hallway window to his left. The gleam of the gold accents surrounding them only made him even more breathtaking. You feel your confidence waver slightly but you push through. It's better to try than not, right? Sleep deprivation is still a valid excuse to use if things donāt work out anyway.
āWould you⦠like to get breakfast together tomorrow?ā Mr. Inference stays quiet for a moment. Then, without another second of delay, he answers; a subtle smile on his face. āIād love to.ā You canāt tell what makes you happier: him accepting your impromptu (and completely unplanned) breakfast date, or the flush that you definitely caught on his cheeks.
You settle on both. āGoodnight!ā You call out to him before retreating to your own cabin. Slipping underneath your comforter, you replay everything in your mind until the sweet lull of rest sweeps you into its arms.
And for the first time in a long while, you sleep soundly.
I firmly believe that Naib is very used to being the one to initiate things in general, so I headcanon he gets lowkey flustered when someone he's into takes the lead. This has gotta be the most self-indulgent fic I've wrote so far LMAO
Completely unrelated, but Iāve been playing Ultrakill for the past two weeks and itās so fun!! Iām so deep in the hole that Iām planning to drop a fic with Gabriel on Ao3 bc Iām all over that mean angel.
⦠EVEN THOUGH I HAVENāT MET HIM IN-GAME YET š
Also, I almost shed a tear when I saw that it costs like $93 USD to buy a signed print from Gianni Matragrano (his voice actor). IāM CANADIAN. ITāS GONNA COST OVER $100 CAD HHH ššš
