I am a recent acolyte to the Star Trek TOS fandom. Being into That Gay Shit as I am, I am discerning a call to Holy Orders in the priesthood of The Premise.

In more serious terms, I am compelled by Star Trek's hopeful visions of the future AND by the huge gaps in a future as imagined by 1960's white men. I explore those gaps, as many do, by writing fanfic and yapping online.

When I'm not critically analyzing media, or responding to it by making art of my own, I teach music lessons and hang out with my darling void cat.

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.

I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.

Agreed on all counts. Abusers are not cartoon villains. They are humans under pressure. All the people who've ever abused me were repeating what they knew. It is not inevitable for people who've been abused to become abusive, but it's not uncommon either, and nobody is immune.

Even worse - they are 9 times out of 10 describing white Christianity, and the conflation of Christianity with whiteness is a deeply violent construction. There is no singular "Christianity." The belief that there is tends to be held by people who have not deconstructed their own whiteness.

There are absolutely critiques to be made of theology that is held in common across Christianities. But if someone's criticizing "religion" and/or "Christianity" in ways that indicate they have never considered, say, liberation theology (as just one example), they're likely just putting a theological sheen on racism.

no but one time i was working on an AU fic where spock has a breakdown because he's about to have a kid (long story ok) and he wants to teach her about vulcan culture but he can't say his own name or "correctly" pronounce many vulcan words meaning he worries he can't raise his child to be proud of being a vulcan and aaaaaaagh
