Growing up on a farm, Whitney was very knowledgeable about the Pokémon that reside there, which were mainly Miltanks that her Grandpa had raised. By the time she was 15, she was able to take over her Grandpa’s farm and started a small delivery service of fresh milk to other neighbors and neighboring towns. However, the daily routine started to tire Whitney out and she found herself daydreaming about another life, preferably in the city.

Not wanting to upset her Grandpa and showing him that she can take care of herself independently at 18. She requested a Pokémon Battle on terms that the winner of the battle got to have a wish granted and the other couldn’t refuse; Whitney had been vocal about wanting to live in the City and her Grandpa objected because he believed that she was still too young. As the battle ensued, each of them giving their all. Whitney was victorious in the end. Having no choice but to comply, her Grandpa allowed her to moved and Whitney chose Goldenrod City, mainly because of the Department Store and the Radio Station there. Excited and nervous about the changes in her life, Whitney moved to Goldenrod on a very frugal budget, which was a disaster because Whitney finds herself at the Department Store more often than not to decorate her room with cute items.

As a last resort, Whitney had attempted to find work at a PokeMart, but realized that it wasn't for her. Now that she was out of options, she had admittedly wanted to go home. But before the decision was finalized, she caught a rumor that Goldenrod needed a Gym Leader. It was as if fate was smiling down at her and then frowning when she realized the League was looking for a speciality other than Normal type Pokemon. However due to her current circumstances, Whitney knew she had nothing to lose. At the age of 20, she was a possible candiate to become a gym leader of Goldenrod. Each of the candiates that had applied, either knew too little or didn't wow the League enough and when everyone else was filtered out of the running- except Whitney, it gave her immense confidence- if not a little bit cocky as one of the young gym leaders in Goldenrod City.

With the status of "Gym Leader" under her belt, Whitney's confidence soared and had the audacity to requested the sub title of "The Incredibly Pretty Girl!" under the Goldenrod City Gym which was approved. With a decent amount of money for her to spend, Whitney had rented out an apartment and continued as the 3rd gym leader in Johto.
