What? You thought the name was just some weird, backwards tribal convention? That Griever’s Vessel wasn’t everything his name implied?

For the Primal within, he needs to experience everything the world has to offer. The good and the bad, the easy and the hard, joy, fear, anger, pain and everything in between. For the mothercrystal, he needs to save the world.

It was interesting to him. Granted the Seeker wasn't much of one for psychoanalysis but he could read the trepidation in the Keeper's body language. An offer that seemed outlandish in its asking, the reward lavish but the danger immense and a feline who seemed perfectly at ease with the prospect of facing such a monstrosity, even doing most of the legwork himself, if he deemed the Dark Knight to be below the standard he was looking for.

This was a Miqo'te who knew something that his opposite did not.

"Twenty thousand gil. And more in future if your skills are up to par," the vessel confirmed easily. "Tell you what, to sweeten the deal, I'll even give you two grand right now. Not even off the top. Twenty-two thousand total," he announced, reaching for a knapsack beside his chair and rummaging for a moment. A smaller coin bag was set upon the table's worn surface with a clink of its contents.

"So yes or no? I'll find someone else to answer the ad if you hesitate much longer..."

And it was that singular sack of coins on the table which sealed the deal.

Consequences be damned when there was money involved, even if that cheery grin plastered on the Seeker's face was enough to put him off his ale... if he'd bothered to order any.

Khum'a was quick to swipe the purse from the surface of that table, quick enough that if one would blink they would miss it, and stash the thing in a rear pouch.

"Yes then," he states simply and rising from his seat to signify that the deal had indeed been made. "We'll meet again in Coerthas."

And with that, he made his exit. If he was going to die for the sake of twenty thousand gil, he would at least go down fighting, it was all he was good at.

There were preparations to be made though it would come as no surprise to the blond that he would be the one left waiting at Camp Dragonhead's aetheryte.

The Miqo'te's grin widened as soon as he saw the speed at which the little gil sack was snatched. The haste in the Keeper's steps was also a source of amusement as he watched his nameless companion take his leave. Well they didn't have to get on, at the end of the day. In fact, it was better that they didn't.

Not wanting to be dealing with a hangover on top of the mood of his dour companion, never mind fight the cyclops with it, the vessel finished his drink and took his own leave that he would be bright and early on the morrow.

There were indeed preparations to be made, though he had few of them himself. Making sure his lance was in good nick was about the main one for him. He had the money in his pack and he was dressed for the weather - just about. Too much would make movement cumbersome and that wouldn't do for the dragoon.

His demeanor was slightly changed once in Coerthas. He hated the cold. And dressing lightly to preserve his freedom of movement didn't help. He was keen to keep moving. Which was great, because they had to get from Camp Dragonhead to Whitebrim before they'd even see their mark.

"I am," the Seeker confirmed freely, seemingly completely unbothered by the continued hostility. It was understandable though. No-one liked to be tested, least of all a Miqo'te with a chip on his shoulder regardless of whether he was Seeker or Keeper (and this one seemed particularly ornery).

"Oh? You want to know what's in it for me besides a lighter coinpurse and knowledge of your prowess?" He chuckled then, light and airy as he sipped of his drink.

"Why should I show my hand early? If we get out there and you're not worth the coin I give you, you would walk away with information I'd rather you didn't have. Either way, you keep the coin and the Cyclops dies."

What was in Whitebrim then? For now? Only knowledge.

"If you want there to be more for you in Whitebrim, then you'd best pray your test results are good, no?"

Khum'a cannot help but surmise that this missive had been placed in his hands by chance. These creatures he was being tasked to take down were formidable - an understatement at best, deadly was far more apt. This blond miqo'te was not the man designated to this particular job... and yet here he was.

Surely he was being led to the slaughter here.

The dark knight fails to raise that query, gaze all but piercing the slip of parchment on the table while he wrestled with himself on whether or not the prize outweighed the risk.

And after only a moment, he decided that it certainly did.

"Twenty grand...?" he repeats then, bright eyes flickering upwards to meet with that deep crimson gaze of the Seeker, as if hearing the total wage of his exploits once more would be enough to purge any doubts he was having about this mission.

It was twenty thousand out of his own pocket too, no less. Not the collected funds of a group or coalition, but his own coin. And the fact that it was his personal hunt also meant that there wouldn't be every greenhorn and his mother hunting the mark, nor crowds searching for a quick coin.

Sipping of the mead he'd ordered before the Miqo'te had arrived, the Seeker's brow rose as his company leaned in but otherwise seemed completely at his ease.

"Well if Sidguru says so, it must be true," he teased lightly, tail flicking behind him in amusement.

For now we're hunting a Cyclops. 'The eyes have it' apparently. Steropes has returned to Eorzean shores with a small army of lesser cyclopes. I'm going to kill two birds with one stone. We rid the realm of a significant threat on the route to Whitebrim and I gauge the strength of the one who comes with me. Normally such a feat would require at least a full adventuring team but, 'one of the best', right?"

Khum'a's gaze was once again distracted by the taunting flicker of the Seeker's tail, and the blond would respond in kind, not just to the gesture but the mention of the cyclops with a single wild thrash of his own.

He was not all that thrilled with this information.

"So you're testing me." Not a question, a mere observation, bitten out between clenched teeth. A swift defensive cross of both arms over his chest as the Keeper leans back in his chosen seat, both wondering if this guy was playing games right now, and having some serious regret about failing to go to the bar and order the darkest flagon of ale this place could offer him.

Still, there was a level of curiosity which needed to be sated, much was the nature of their kind, it had to be said.

"And what's in Whitebrim if I pass your little... test, hm?"

The newcomer could think what he wanted, he could jump to whatever conclusions he liked. Even if the Seeker knew what was running through his company's mind, he probably wouldn't bother to correct him. He wasn't exactly the poster-boy for Seeker culture anyway.

Amused by the response that he wasn't going to be given a name, the vessel simply shrugged and wondered how long it would take the Keeper to get bored of being called in such a way. Taking the sour feline's attitude in stride, he refused to be ruffled by the obvious animosity.

"So distrusting, and you don't even know me," he observed playfully, tail flicking lightly behind him.

"Well, since I'm not posting through one of the hunt masters, you'll get a gil reward, not a clan-mark reward. You pull your weight, you get a flat 20k gil for a mark of A-rank equivalent. You decide to pull that stick outta your ass over the course of the hunt and maybe I throw in a little extra."

Twenty thousand was nought to be sniffed at, and it may very well seem to the Seeker seated opposite that this figure was the cause of the sudden drop in the Keeper's shoulders and the softening of his stare.

In actuality, it was the origin of the missive, which was just now catching Khum'a's attention. So very rare was it to find a mark not granted by the hunt masters and displayed upon the hunting boards of almost every city-state.

And, of course this would not be the first time the blond had been caught with his pants down due to simple assumptions. Nor would it be the last.

And so he leans in then, the creak of leather from his armour apparent in that moment and much louder than his own voice right then.

"The fact I don't know you gives me reason to distrust. That being said; Sidurgu tells me you're one of the best, the hell are we really hunting here...?"

Indeed he seemed to be quite happily chatting to the pair of patrons drinking at the table next to him and he was about to rise and join them when his conversation was interrupted by the newcomer.

"Not one I chose myself," he answered brightly, taking the stranger's sour mood in stride with a slightly apologetic look to the pair he'd been about to join. Duty called, he supposed.

His ruby gaze dipped to the missive and the smile he was wearing didn't fade in the slightest.

"Not one you're like to forget either. So when you get what you're owed when we close out the hunt, you'll remember that I'm good for what I've posted and you'll answer the call again.

"Do I get to know your name, or does 'oi, you' work just as well?"

Oh good. If it weren't bad enough that this pale moggy had an irritatingly sunny disposition, he was a Sun Seeker to boot. A Tia, no doubt; just passing the time until the elder male of whatever dysfunctional clan he came from popped his clogs and was presented a chance to get his dick wet, no doubt.

Seekers were weird, and Khum'a was quite happy to not be a part of any of it - hell working with one was a little bit too close for comfort, but needs must and all that.

"Oi, you works fine." Delivered with a healthy level of snark as he took his seat at the table, of course completely oblivious to the pair this Griever had previously been engaged with.

"And we'll see about callbacks, yeah? Ain't one to want to work with someone if they're about to stiff me outta gil." he nods then to the missive before fixing Griever with his own bright gaze once more. "Talk numbers, and I'll decide if this hunt is worth my time. Know that meat-shields are in short supply these days, hm?"

Standing there looking at the back of his supposed companion's head, Khum'a can't contain the irritated groan reverbirating from the bowels of his throat.

A male Miqo'te... Why? He was simply told to look for a man with snow-white hair. Lo and behold, this damn moggy was the only person in the whole rotten bar with said description.

Just his damned luck.

The blond can already feel the hairs of his tail beginning to bloom like this season's petunias just by the sight of him. And needless to say, that feeling was far from pleasant.

Still, the hunt needed to go ahead, and... Khum'a Erih needed to eat, so as much as he loathed to at that moment, the dark knight approached the table, slamming the missive on the wood in front of this guy he had been sent to meet and fixing him with his most aggressive stare he could muster.

"What kind of name is Griever, anyway?"

A thought occurred to Miles, and in hindsight, he wasn't sure why he hadn't thought to ask sooner. As he prodded at the fire that they had started at their makeshift camp, the man's brows furrowed in contemplation before he finally found the best way to make his inquiry:

"What do you like to eat, Maru?"

Maru was too busy staring into the flames to begin with, to realise that he was being spoken to and he jerked his head up, snapping his gaze away from the dancing lights and heat of the fire to settle his gaze on his companion.

"Huh? Oh! I like fish!" he replied with way more enthusiasm than was probably warranted for a simple question of taste.

"Any kind of fish. Roasted over the fire. With rice or veggies or both! Delicious." He grinned brightly before his gaze slid away in thought.

"And sweet things. Fruits. Fruit pastries, things like that!"

And back up his gaze went, head tilted just slightly.

"What about you?"

The white-furred feline stepped into the apartment when he was invited to and not before. He took in as much as he could as quickly as he could, head turning this way and that as his gaze alighted on every little thing.

"You could live in a hole in the ground and I'd still be beyond flattered that you'd want to invite me in," he replied lightly, flicking a bright little smile in Cathan's direction. "This is your space, and yet here I am, inside it with you."

Maybe he was being a bit sappy, but he meant it. It was a big deal to invite someone into such a personal space and he appreciated that fact.

"How about you get comfortable and I'll cook up that fish we picked up on the way? To say thank you."

maru's reassurance helped settle the nerves. it was still odd, reacting this way to the simplest things. there was nothing to be so afraid of, and yet, shaking hands and his heart beating like a war-drum were all too familiar around maru.

his brother's voice echoed in his mind. "it simply means you're serious about it", daithi had said, wearing that shite-eating grin of his. cathan began to suspect he had the right of it.

"oh," he said, a little dumbly. "sure, knock yourself out. i would be a poor help in the kitchen, anyroad." cathan was many things, but certainly not a cook. that talent was far out of his reach.

stepping closer to maru after closing the door, he curved a palm around his lover's cheek, and kissed him gently. "i am... glad you feel this way, truly. it has been some time since i last had a visitor."

His smile was radiant when he was given permission to cook up the fish and he nodded eagerly. He wasn't exactly a professional chef by any stretch of the imagination but if there was one thing he did know how to do, it was cook fish (even if he was more used to doing it over a campfire or some such).

There was no hesitation in Maru when Cathan kissed him too, he returned it lightly and tried not to be disappointed when they parted. "Then I'm glad to be the first in a while. Makes me feel special," he replied in a gentle tease.

"Come on. You can still help out in the kitchen. Pour us some drinks, season the fish, things like that. Don't think you get to just sit and chill while I do *all* the work," he taunted lightly, brushing against Cathan as he moved past and he made his way to the kitchen space with a sultry little sway to his hips.

Well that hadn't gone over too well, but at least some of it had gone down before the taste seemed to have become too much to swallow. "Alright, alright," he replied, unwilling to force the issue. He could dump out the rest on the wounds directly, once he'd found them. For now it was enough that Sephiroth was conscious. Or close to it anyway. "Stay still for a minute okay? I've got you," he murmured, setting the unfinished potion aside and continuing the little touches. "Unless you want me to drag you, I can't get you to somewhere more comfortable on my own, so I need you to relax a minute, get your bearings, gather your strength."

He had never been a good patient, turning uncooperative when injured if only because he never knew how else to act. He protected others, he saved others; Sephiroth had always been ill-suited to the reversal of roles.

At least he wasn't dying. As consciousness cleared moment by moment, he did gain the awareness enough to know that. There were bruises, there might have been bones fractured if not broken, and he could feel the blood in his hair from a deep cut.

But he was alive, and the little he had drank of the potion did help.

Sephiroth nodded in understanding. Maru was right. He needed to gather himself together, and later he might curse his size because who could carry him when he was wounded? His eyes closed and he nearly lost consciousness again.

Maru would be the first to admit that having a considerably larger person around was to his benefit more often than not. But every now and then, that 'not' was a hell of a lot of trouble, as he was finding out.

Not dead indeed, which meant that it'd be easier to move him but if Sephiroth was going to be stubborn about letting himself be treated... he might end up worse down the line. The Miqo'te was glad at least that he'd gotten a little of the potion in him, even if he was going to have to search for the other wounds and apply the potion to them directly if he wanted to see them at least provisionally treated.

"Hey, hey, keep your eyes open for me, yeah?" he urged gently, checking for a head wound in case the man was suffering with a concussion. He did indeed find a head wound, and before Sephiroth could stop him or do more than protest, the feline had tipped a measure of the potion over the wound as best he could with the man's hair in the way. It didn't leave much left for any other wounds that may have been sustained, but Maru hoped that it would be enough.

"I'm not above dragging you if I need to, Sephi. Don't you pass out on me or I'm gonna need to have words with you..."

what does one gift the warrior of light? simple, according to erenville: a capybara cub. which he hands him with a noncommittal hum.

Really there was no way to ever know what the gleaner considered an appropriate gift. Given the places that he'd been and the things that he'd seen in his travels, he could come up with almost anything as a gift.

So while the capybara cub was a surprise, it also, kind of wasn't.

Nevertheless, Maru's eyes lit up as he held up the little giant rodent and it gaze passively back at him as if it wasn't in the least bit bothered by the fact that it was being held.

"Thank you so much! I'm gonna call him Derek."

Why Derek?

Who knows.

There was nothing but easy acceptance in the Miqo'te who in turn melted against Sephiroth and seemed not to care a whit about how he could be squished against the wall. "The call to adventure will come again, of that I have no doubt," he replied quietly, loathe to part too far from Sephiroth's lips and thus did he speak almost against them. "But for now at least, every sun is yours and yours alone."

He grinned then, shifting in Sephiroth's arms enough that he could point over the man's shoulder in the direction of the bedroom.

"Onwards then! To bed! My warmth will return to it!"

"And every sun will be cherished. ...Even when it's too hot," the swordsman joked, hefting Maru a little higher so that he could carry him away from the wall and, indeed, to bed.

No sooner had he closed the door behind him than he laid the Miqo'te out on the bed and leaned over him for another kiss.

"Have I said yet that I've missed you?" he whispered, breaking the kiss. "Whether I have or not, I've missed you. I've missed you, I've missed you..."

How weak he was for Maru.

More than happy to be carried around, the Miqo'te loosened his grips just enough for Sephiroth to adjust him comfortably and cheered as he was indeed carted off to the bedroom.

Laid out like a treat as he was, Maru welcomed Sephiroth above him and encouraged the taller male to slot their bodies together by wrapping his arms around Sephiroth's neck as their lips met.

"I think you may have mentioned it," he replied in a light tease before it was repeated and the feline combed his fingers through Sephiroth's hair once more, leaning up to punctuate each whispered sentiment with a kiss.

"I missed you too. I'm here now though. Come here," he murmured in return, holding the taller male against him even as it pressed him down into the mattress. Comfortable, just slightly squished beneath him, Maru sealed their lips in another kiss, lingering, longing, tempting him to ask for a demonstration of how much he'd been missed.
