“I trust Aurelius with my life because he’s always been there for me. He’s never let me down and I think he’s incapable of doing so. He is the only person that has consistently supported me and has been by my side since I was a child. I wish I could name those who have known me longer, my own flesh and blood, but my family can’t be trusted. For a long time I trusted Magnus but each day I feel us drifting further and further and I know he has already taken my father’s side. “

Who do I trust the least? 

“My father, I know better than to trust him or men like him in positions of power. He is ruthless and selfish and has never shown me an ounce of kindness because he hasn’t thought I could be of use to him. It must be easy for Magnus to trust him because he’s been grooming him since he was born to be his perfect little king, but no one else should trust my father. He is a man who is only looking out for himself. “

           This was bad. This was very very bad.

She thought she could keep control. She was so sure she could. And for her misjudgement Anne was left to wander the early morning of Norden soaked from the snow with little more than a pair of (stolen) trousers, a shirt and a cloak that some careless town folk had left out in the night. “Excuse me!” She called to figure that just turned the corner. She could be grateful at least at how deserted the cobblestone streets were still early in the morning to avoid any suspicions. “Do you have a spare coat that I can borrow?”

At first Daniel had hated the Norden curfew, but within a few weeks of being in the snow covered kingdom, he had discovered it was the perfect excuse to shamelessly spend the entire night at his favorite local brothel getting drunk and enjoying the company of a few courtesans. He was disguised as a commoner, wearing simple dark clothes, his mess of long dark hair covering his sharp features. He looked the part of a drunk, stumbling out of an alleyway between a tavern and a brothel, but the large fur coat he wore around his frame seemed off, too expensive for the rest of his disguise. 

“Fuck” He mumbled under his breath, squinting his eyes as he entered the morning light. He was too distracted by his piercing head ache to hear when she first called out to him, but at her question, he turned slowly, confused at the sound of a familiar voice. It took him a second to process everything and recognize Anne, his brain still foggy from all the wine of the previous night. A smirk tugged at his lips as he walked towards her, taking off his coat and giving it to her. “You certainly look like you got yourself into some mischief last night.” he said with a small chuckle, completely unaware of what the princess had really been doing that evening. “You can tell me all about it over a drink by the fire, come on. No one expects royalty at this hour looking like this in a tavern.” He said as he began walking in the direction of a tavern he knew opened with the sunrise.

“your highness,” she greets evenly, watching as one of her guards help him up. she was never really fond of the blackharts though her quarrels did not seem to be with daniel. after all, he was innocent until proven guilty. emeline allows herself to give him a small laugh at his words. but she is quick to cease them as he continues speaking. instead, she encaptures one hand with the other and waits patiently for him to finish. he speaks of the new world and it causes ill feelings to swell in the pit of her stomach but she shows no wrong feeling looks on her face. “you seem to have been injured a many times throughout our stay in teshayra. it’s a miracle you’ve recovered.”

“Some say a miracle, other’s say a curse.” He responded, his tone playful, other’s mostly referring to Octavius. “I’ve nearly died far too many time for it not to be one or the other.” He responded, referring to the terrible illnesses which plagued him every winter growing up, nearly threatening to take the young prince’s life almost yearly. Death was a constant thing in the prince of Ironhaven’s life, whether it was the death of his mother which still plagued him, the death of his lover in Teshayra which he had managed to repress for now, or the constant death that came with living in Ironhaven. It was easy for him to joke of such a dark topic, a defense mechanism which he had developed to his absolute fear of the inevitability of mortality.

”Lord Prin— Daniel, I m-mu-ust protest you know, actually going in here, I um, r-really don’t mind waiting for you— ,” Aurelius can’t help but stumble for words, honestly you’d think he’d be used to this by now, normally getting away with not having to go in….these types of places. It’s not that he was disgusted by them or anything far from that of course, it just wracked his nerves was all. Somehow though he didn’t think he was going to be able to talk Daniel out of bringing him inside, at least not with the way his body was finally starting to tremble at the cold. He’d been out for a few hours and now it was midday gallivanting, following after his prince and it would seem that the cold would finally find a way to settle into his bones. His face was flushed red from the cold and the fumbling of his own speech, very rarely did he stutter these days, something he normally tried to keep himself calm enough from doing as it had been quite the annoyance during his childhood. The more he usually actively tried to avoid it when he was nervous though, the more it only seemed to happen. To think he was supposed to be the adult in this situation, how laughable. The prince of Ironhaven dragging his valet into a brothel was even more laughable on second thought, if this ever got out surely the people of Norden would talk, if not elsewhere. ”s-surely you don’t need me to come in, i’m perfectly wa-wa-warm and alright out here I assure you Daniel.” He wasn’t warm at all, or alright but the prince had been around the lap dog long enough to know when his mutt was yapping out excuses surely. Aurelius’s hands fumble in his coat pockets, knuckles idly cracking underneath, he’d actually on occasion been in places like this though that had only been to check on the lord prince when he’d been gone longer than usual. Never had he actually went inside and stayed inside though, so he honestly quite feared what he’d gotten himself into this time.

Daniel had awoken early and full of energy, a rarity for the Ironhaven prince. He had spent the past few days in the forest, officially he was out hunting, but actually he had been helping Athenais train. That particular morning they had no plans to train, so Daniel decided to ask Aurelius to accompany him into town, looking for any excuse to get the Bearornian princess off his mind. Mid way through his little shopping spree, the prince had an ingenious idea. What better way to get a girl off his mind than a quick visit to the best of the local brothels/ There was practically a skip in Dan’s step as he headed to the establishment, dragging Aurelius along. “Oh come on, I promise it won’t be that bad. Stop being dramatic.” He responded with a dismissive flamboyant flick of the wrist.

“Oh now you’re just lying to me.” Daniel responded, an amused expression on his face. “You’re clearly freezing He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t enjoying how flustered Aurelius was about the whole situation. The valet had come to his rescue more than a few times after Daniel had gotten himself way too drunk at one brothel or another during his wild nights in disguise outside the castle walls back home, but it was clear the older man never enjoyed the trip. For this particular occasion however, Daniel had something up his sleeve. He had heard a rumor that one of his favorite escorts was in town, someone who he thought might actually interest his Valet.  “Take this before you freeze. I have the wine to keep me warm.” Daniel responded as he removed his fur coat and placed it on his Valet’s shoulders, making sure to shoot the man a look which said he didn’t want his actions to be questioned by him. He hoped Aur would simply accept the coat until they completed their short walk to the brothel. The bitter chill didn’t bother him, he had sampled a great deal of wine at the market, enough to make him feel warm and totally relaxed as he continued to merrily skip towards his destination, looking much more enthusiastic than his partner.

“The kingdom you gain surely suffers from the loss of war…” the princess was stubborn and wanted to get her point across. Even if she was talking to someone practically raised on war strategies, she still wanted to argue. His aloofness towards the topic intrigued her. It was as if they were talking about something as common as fashion, but even with a topic like that Daniel seemed more interested than he was now. Surprisingly, Attie didn’t break her eye contact with Daniel, even as he stepped closer. Was she challenging him? Well, she had nothing to challenge him with but she could sense a level of tension. “I suppose we could. The gods will forgive us for killing one innocent creature to feed another…..” she smirked at him. “Are we going to hunt or are we going to continue to stare into each other’s soul? I do not mind either but I could’ve stared at you in the castle, we didn’t need to travel all the way out here for this.”

“The winner never thinks of that, and if the thought even does cross their mind, they’re likely self-absorbed enough to convince themselves they’re actually helping- or at least that’s the lie they’ll tell.” He responded, agreeing with her but knowing all too well that war and the game of empires never worked that way. The losers were left to be forgotten, to be eat alive by new histories written by the winner. His tone and expression made it clear how he felt about the topic, mostly bored but slightly disgusted. 

Their little stare-off proved much more interesting than their conversation about war. A mischievous smirk danced on his lips as he stood there, unable to take his eyes off of her. He chuckled in response. “Well since you seem so concerned with what other thinks of us, perhaps I did have to get you all the way here just to look into your eyes.” He responded, making no effort to move. The thought of kissing her was almost overwhelming. He considered his options as he stood there, but unlike with most of his romantic pursuits, the fear of rejection was a reality with Athenais, and he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Finally, he broke her gaze, reaching behind his back to pull at an arrow. “I few practice shots first before you become a cold-blooded killer.” He suggested as he turned slightly to face one of the trees and loaded his bow. He picked the thinnest tree he could find (wanting to show off just a tiny bit), a tall barren one with bark the color of ash. His arrow shot through the air, landing perfectly where he had intended it to, piercing the wood of the intended tree. He turned to her and waited for her shot.

Teddy had picked up his horse at the appropriate time, leather clade hands gripping the reins to a calm horse as he thanked the stable hand. Although weary on the horse, he made quick time going to the location on the nose as his heart beat fast. He was so busy, he hadn’t seen his confidant in person for days.  He took a deep breathe as he came upon their meeting spot, smiling down fondly at the prince. “I’m flattered, as well as quite shakey.” He said softly before nodding to the request, motioning his horse on to continue their jouney beside the noble. “I’ve–I’ve missed you as well, dearly actually.” He confessed, soft eyes shining at the other.

He chuckled light heartedly, noting that Teddy was right and clearly not as experienced on horseback as he was. “Don’t worry, we’ll go slowly and the terrain is pretty manageable for the most part. Azeus is a good horse, very calm.” He responded, trying to reassure the older man riding next to him. A smile tugged at Dan’s lips at Teddy’s words, always enjoying even the smallest action or words which made him feel wanted. “It’s a shame it’s taken us so long to be able to meet again.” He mused as they rode on, the vegetation around them growing thicker and thicker as they delved deeper into the forest. “I haven’t even had a chance to tell you how handsome you looked the night of the ball.” He said with a smile, trying his best not to think of Athenais at the mention of that evening. He had planned on approaching Teddy that night, as discreetly as possible in the crowded room, He figured no one would too intrigued by the interaction since Teddy had been his nurse. But before Daniel could approach him, he had left the room in a hurry, missing all the drama of the evening.

“But why else would we kill outside of war if not to make the other party suffer? What motivation is there other than causing suffering?” That was the only point she could see, anyway. But she understood that war was more about annihilating your opponent as quickly as possible. Still, in Attie’s eyes, the main goal was to cause suffering one way or another. “Well thankfully he cannot hear what is said between us. I don’t know who vexes me more, King Nathaniel or my brother Nathaniel.” She rolled her eyes, not wanting to make the conversation about her brother. Her world did not revolve around them. At least, that was the goal these days. Attie dismounted Jewel and gently petted the horse. “Good girl,” she cooed before going on to survey the area. She would agree that this was a good spot but the mention of killing a deer made her seem less than pleased. “ And what will we do with a dead deer? We can’t walk into the court with it! The scandal. That would be very improper of us, we are not common savages. Would we leave it here and let beasts get to it?” She was much less concerned with the actual killing than what they would do with their kill. “Can you imagine the looks on everyone’s faces? Such a scandal: the prince of Ironhaven and the princess of Bearoria killing for sport and having the audacity to soil the castle’s floors.” She gave him a devious grin. “ But you don’t care about that, do you?”

“Win a war, gain a kingdom. It’s not about making the other suffer, it’s about what you’re gain. There’s not much thought behind the casualties.” Daniel responded casually, not putting much emotion behind the words, simply reiterating the spirit of much of his military training growing up in Ironhaven. He walked Onyx over to one of the trees, tying her reins to a thick low hanging branch. An amused smile tugged at Daniel’s lips as he watched Attie in her dramatic glory. His steps sounded against the snow as he walked towards her. At her question, his smile twisted into a mischievous smirk. “Oh not one bit.” He responded, locking eyes with her. Daniel could feel the tension in the air between them as they looked at each other, mischief in their gazes. He couldn’t help his mind as it quickly began to wander, taking the expression on Athenais’ face as a challenge. He thought about closing the distance between them, kissing her, right then and there, but he couldn’t. He didn’t try to break the eye contact, enjoying the intensity of it as he stepped closer. “We could always leave the deer to the wolves.” He suggested with a shrug.

magnus-blackhart:

“I will talk with her and see if she felt the same as you did then. But i do meant it Daniel, don’t be an asshole to her.” Magnus’ patience for his brother’s antics wasn’t really high right now, and Selena though he didn’t think he loved her right now was his future wife and that alone commanded respect. And well, respect especially towards royalty was something Ironhaven cared much about. “I guess right now most of my time goes to hearing about how everyone is looking for the cure and so on.”

Daniel took advantage of the fact that his back was turned to his brother as he prepared to shoot another arrow, and he allowed himself to dramatically roll his eyes at Magnus’s comment. “As long as she’s not an asshole, I won’t be either.” He responded simply. Magnus always seemed to have someone elses back, the older they got the less his brother seemed to be on his side. He was beginning to feel like he could no longer really count on Magnus. Things weren’t like they used to be when they were children. He wasn’t sure they were on the same team any longer. “Mother would have been so paranoid with this plague.” Daniel commented, his tone softer than it had been before as he recalled their mother. Since Daniel had been such a sickly child whenever a new illness would sweep across their kingdom she would become incredibly worried that the sickness might make it’s way past the castle walls. “I’m sure the healers are hard at work, they’ll come up with something soon.” Daniel mused.

“Also, I suppose it’s good practice to learn to kill something that doesn’t deserve such a death.” Reading about wars, Athenais wondered how many innocents laid their life down for a cause. How many deserved to die the way they did? “It should be easier to kill an animal, no? As long as it’s quick and the creature does not endure much suffering. I think the point of killing another man is to make him suffer… that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.” She nearly asked Daniel if he had ever killed anyone but decided against it. He was much too gentle for that. “Sometimes I wonder how someone could be so unlike their kingdom’s core values.” Attie rode on, silent for a moment. “ You know…when we were acquiring the ships to return home..I was so ready to release an arrow into a pirate. But then I didn’t get the chance and I’m grateful that I didn’t. Maybe we ought to switch kingdoms sometime? I think I am too eager to show off my skills to be Bearorian and you’re too soft for Ironhaven.” It was a joke, of course. She knew very well that she belonged no where near Ironhaven. Her meager abilities with a bow were nothing compared to how girls are raised in that kingdom. “My brother may just stop breathing if he heard me make a joke like that.”

Daniel sighed “I suppose it is easier.” He responded. Daniel had only been to battle once before, but with his weapon of choice being the bow and arrow, it was easier to carry the guilt of having killed another man since in the chaos of battle it was difficult to see just who’s arrow successfully murdered someone. “I don’t think the point is ever supposed to be to make the other suffer, not in war at least. A quick and relatively painless kill is efficient. Efficiency is key to winning when you have an army of thousands marching towards you. Kill as many as possible as quickly as possible, and you survive.” As much as he hated war and battle, he had excelled in military strategy during his training. Daniel was perceptive and carried an incredible sense of intuition, two skills which seemed to translate seamlessly into the area of study. Early on, when there was still hope that Daniel would grow out of his gentle nature, his tutors had predicted he would make a great asset to the Ironhaven military as a leader, but by now the thought seemed almost laughable. A smirk tugged at his lips at Attie’s words, it was true, neither of them seemed to fix their kingdom right, but she was better at playing the part than him. He laughed lightheartedly along with her as she went on, but the words ‘you’re too soft for Ironhaven’ lingered in his mind. He knew she didn’t mean anything of it, but he was tired of hearing it. He was tired of people seeing his empathy and mistaking it for weakness. “I think you brother would stop breathing at half our conversations.” He responded with a smirk still dancing on his lips. He slowed down his horse and turned into a small clearing in the forest he had discovered a few days prior. “This is a good spot to practice.” He commented as he rode Onyx to the middle of the clearing and unmounted her. They were surrounded by large oaks all around, small dents in the thick bark of the trees showed that Daniel had already been there to train previously. “Since you’re so eager to kill, after a few practice shots to warm up we can try and hunt down some deer, I’ve seen them hanging around a bit further in the woods.”

She had a sinking feeling that Daniel was shutting her out but she quickly dismissed the thought when he apologized. “It is not an overreaction. I understand your concern. But also understand that I would not spend so much time with you if I had any negative feelings. If there is ever a moment that I have a shred of doubt about this, you would know. I would not lie to you.” And she was being sincere. She would have died of boredom in Teshayra if she had’t spent so much time with Daniel, she enjoyed his company even without being in a foreign land. “We can pretend it never happened but that will not stop me from making sure I don’t offend you again.” She observed the forest around them as they delved further. She had yet to venture out of the castle this way and she took everything in. “I never thought I would be the kind of person to enjoy excursions such as this. Do you genuinely enjoy hunting? Or is it just the Ironhaven thing to do?”

“I will keep that in mind.” He responded simply. No matter how many times she said it however, he would always have his moment’s of doubt, he always did with everyone. A small smile tugged at his lips. “I appreciate that.” He responded, feeling a bit better about the whole ordeal already. By now they were completely immersed in the forest, large oaks covered in a thin layer of snow all around them. “Well I’m no savage, I don’t enjoy the kill. There’s no thrill in it for me on that end, unlike with many of my fellow countrymen.” They were far away from the preying ears of the courts, it was just them in the forest and he felt comfortable enough with Athenais to speak freely. “I enjoy the tranquility of the woods, I enjoy the challenge of a moving target, the horse ride, the reward of the hunt, everything but the actual killing.” he responded with a shrug. “In Ironhaven hunting can be an important part of training. It’s supposed to desensitize us to the act of taking a life, prepare us for battle. It gets easier over time, but truthfully it still often leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.” It was for opinions such as this that Daniel was perceived as weak, too soft for a Blackhart, too much of a coward to ever even dream of ruling Ironhaven. But the young prince saw no honor in violence, fighting in a just war was one thing, but he often felt that violence in Ironhaven was not justified.

Do you think you would make a good king?

“Well I’ve never given it much thought, Magnus is the true heir and I have absolutely no ambition to take the crown from him. But if a time came where I had to accept the responsibility of the crown and somehow the council of Ironhaven actually let me rule, I think I would fair much better than most except. I think I would make a just king. I care deeply for the citizens of Ironhaven and I would do everything in my power to serve them and protect them and care for them as a king should. I would also like to restore some of the more tumultuous relationships my family has with some of the other royals and nobles of Zenan. I would stand by the balance and protect it fiercely since I think it is integral to the survival of all the kingdoms. “

apologize? no, that was just something selena didn’t do. she didn’t even apologize to magnus after screaming at him for literally no reason. how could she humiliate herself like this then? the lady clenched her jaw at his words, noticing the people around them who suddenly seemed all too interested in their conversation. she couldn’t even give them a deadly stare because it was too embarrassing. & did he really have to be this dramatic about it? apologizing to daniel ..she must truly love magnus.  and knowing how much he must be enjoying seeing her like this, it only made selena despise him even more. but still, the lady gritted her teeth and forced herself to look up at the prince again. ‘’ daniel, i am … ‘’ she took a deep breath. ‘’ i’m so sorry for the way i treated you in the past.’’ every word made selena want to throw up, made her imagine the many ways she could kill him. ‘’ i apologize sincerely for my actions and i hope we can move past our differences. ‘’ 

He be lying if he said he wasn’t enjoy it. He had always taken Selena to be rather prideful and full of herself, and clearly this wasn’t easy for her. He expected her not to do it, to storm off and give up her whole act, but instead she continued forward and began her apology. He was impressed. “Of course I forgive you, Selena. It would be my pleasure to move forward since as you said, we will be family soon.” He responded, that mischievous glint of his still in his gaze. He knew every word she had said was complete bullshit, so he responded accordingly with bullshit of his own. The curious onlookers resumed their conversations at Daniel’s polite answer, everyone seeming to have expected a bit more drama. “Now, do you care to join me for a walk through the garden, my lady?” He asked.

magnus-blackhart:

“Preferably it will be better than how things were the last time.” They wouldn’t have to sneak around and he wouldn’t end up hurting her,hopefully. “I’m glad to hear it.” But his relief faded fast at his brothers next words. He stared at Dan, a look that was much to similar to Octavius’ gaze. “Had fun with her? You say that as if you did something to her to get her to apologiese and I truly hope that is not the case. I don’t care if you two hate each other but you will respect each other.”

He could recognize his father in the gaze which Magnus shot at him. He rolled his eyes, not the least bit intimidated “Oh relax. It was all in good fun. If she didn’t complain to you then it clearly wasn’t so bad.” He reasoned with Magnus. “She approached me about wanting to improve our relationship. I simply said I would only consider it after she apologized. It was amusing because we were in a crowded hall and she can be rather prideful.” He stated rather simply, not really taking the comment a much of an insult, not like he really cared all that much. “There was no real harm done, perhaps just a slightly bruised ego, nothing she can’t handle.” He responded with a dismissive flick of his wrist. She deserved it, but he refrained from adding that comment. He sighed, already bored with the direction the conversation had taken. “Anything else going on in your life I should know about? I feel we don’t talk as often as we used to.”
