[🎁] ATINY PRESENT ATEEZ ZERO : FEVER Part.2 (DIARY Ver.) SPECIAL PHOTO ‘YUNHO’
Okay so. To put it bluntly, 90% of the time? Your male idol faves probably aren't ♡~*woke*~♡.
Guaranteed.
They just know how to not trend for the wrong reasons and they have pr teams. When they do trend, from what I've seen, it's usually not something they did actively. Example: the NCTs and their smoking line. Sasaengs/sishengs were the cause of that, not the neos going out and boasting about their nicotine addiction.
They know how to, or rather, how not to act when the camera is on them. You cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that a bunch of teenagers and young adults who have slowly lost contact with regular peers are going to be developing in the same way. You cannot look me in the eye and tell me that teenage boys and young adult men who play video games are not saying gross things at some point. Especially when they know there's no camera on them.
Like, just a few weeks ago we saw Mark Lee do something rather vulgar when trying to describe rice cakes during a game of charades. And he's from the West. Where, in general, the culture is extremely different to South Korea.
Do I think that there are idols who are genuine and trying their best to become better people? 100% absolutely. I don't think that Ateez Hongjoong and the Polished Man campaign was a publicity stunt, and BTS even changed certain things in their lyrics to make sure Western, read: American, fans don't get accidentally offended by something. And I definitely don't think that Ten's answer about queer/LGBT fans was something SM would've endorsed had it been something more in their control.
But in general?
They just know what to do and say because they're trained and coached in it. They probably aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.
Tl;dr: your faves at the end of the day are still just some guys and sometimes guys do and say stupid shit and you can't go around babying them because that doesn't help them learn or grow. Be critical of them like you would of anyone on the street. Just because their famous doesn't mean they're exempt.
