Armor - Chapter 41

honey i'm HOME chapter 41 is finally finally up! and i think i'm officially over 100k words? damn

also i listened to such INTENSE music for this chapter and now i'm trying to write a research paper and it is not the right vibes. but that is okay. i hope you all enjoy <3

It was supposed to be a peaceful day. Harmony was supposed to take a call to explore a high-level Hyperspace pocket and capture any new Pokémon. Afterwards, Tyler was supposed to take her and Margaux to a nearby café, where Margaux had a casual date planned with Juliette, and Tyler and Harmony were going to sit around the corner in hiding (for moral support). And the two grunts were supposed to be right outside the Hyperspace pocket, keeping watch for Harmony and waiting for her to come back out. But when she stepped out into an empty alleyway, she immediately knew something was wrong. Tyler and Margaux, who were supposed to be on either side of the entrance to the Hyperspace pocket, were nowhere to be seen. The towering buildings on either side threw grey shadows over the cobblestone, and Mega Shards glistened darkly overhead. And it was eerily, deathly silent, without even a single Pidgey chirp. The hair on the back of Harmony’s neck prickled.  “Margaux?” she called out, quiet but urgent. “Tyler?” Her voice dissipated into the late morning air. There was no response.  Harmony put a hand on her Poké ball belt.

Harmony had stayed in bed when Corbeau got up. She was still there when he came back from exercising, and after his shower, and when he stopped back at the apartment for lunch. From the door to the bedroom, Corbeau studied his wife, facing away from him and buried under the blankets as a quiet, deflated lump. Daylight filtered in through the tinted windows, a soft glow dusting the floor and the sheets. “Harmony,” he called out. The mass of sheets shifted. “Mm.” “Are you okay?” “I’m fine.”  Corbeau pushed off the doorframe and padded across the room, settling on the edge of his side of the bed. He put a hand on Harmony’s arm through the blankets. “You’ve been in bed a while,” he said. “Are you going to stay here all day?” “Maybe.”

The email loomed in Corbeau’s inbox like an omen. It was almost time to join the video call with O&C Industries – Harmony’s parents – and Corbeau stared at the screen so hard the words blurred. I’m disappointed to hear that you’ve declined our initial partnership offer, it read. Perhaps we can have a call to see if there are other options you would be more interested in. Once again, it was signed off at the bottom: Andrew King, CEO, O&C Industries. Philippe was standing at attention behind Corbeau’s desk. “Ready whenever you are, Boss,” he said.  “We’ll join a minute early,” Corbeau said, eyes still burning into his computer screen. “I have no idea what to expect from this call.” He’d done his research as best as he could. He knew Harmony’s parents, Andrew and Lee King, held extraordinary power over the massive company, able to make decisions against the consideration of executive boards or stakeholders. He knew they were well-liked in Sinnoh and abroad with a reputation for showy displays of generosity and competitive pay for office workers, but allegations of inhumane conditions for the men and women actually working in the mines. And he also knew, with Marie’s help, that they were truly, sincerely upset by his initial rejection. He wanted to find out why.

Armor - Chapter 38

Corbeau didn’t like fire. It was impersonal, blunt, out of his control – not his style, more suited to the precision of a bullet or the closeness of a fist. Not to mention the sweltering heat. But as he watched the roaring fire engulf the warehouse before him, he couldn’t help a little hint of satisfaction. He had finally hit pay dirt in the investigation into the sewer attack. Juliette had caught a whiff of who had been responsible – through flirting, a method even less congruent to Corbeau’s mannerisms than fire – and Daisuke’s network of street vendors had confirmed it: twelve members of Mira, paid by a representative from Bertrand’s inner circle and with strict orders to conceal their identities.  Corbeau pulled the metal gate down to seal the warehouse – the one that the Mira stored their drugs and illicit goods in – and turned back to his car, the sound of his footsteps on the gravel concealed by the shrieking of fire alarms.

Urbain had demanded Harmony return to Hotel Z for dinner. I have a new recipe to celebrate Ansha being back at Hotel Z, he’d said. Come try it and let me know what you think! Harmony, being a good friend, had completed her day’s work as quickly as possible, excited at the possibility that Urbain may have finally discovered a recipe for something edible. Instead, the new dish was a nightmare of chopped croissant, donut, and pasta with sauce. It was a concerning shade of orange, and it looked like something that might be deployed for psychological warfare.  There was a long silence after Urbain set plates of his “dish” down in front of everyone. It jiggled unnervingly upon contact. Harmony could swear she saw it breathe. “This looks…interesting,” Lida finally said as diplomatically as she could. “Thanks!” Urbain responded. “I had to welcome Ansha back with something exciting!” The girl in question was sitting at her usual spot at the table, hands folded politely in front of her own plate of nonsense. “I appreciate it, Urbain,” she said. “You’re a very creative chef.” Harmony bit the inside of her mouth to stop herself from laughing.

Corbeau had never been so miserable in his life. What he had thought was a cold had spiraled into a suffocating fever, congestion, and cough. It seemed that working like nothing was wrong and running around Lumiose at night to save Juliette had not been the best ideas. Doctor Emmanuel slipped off her gloves with a snap. “It’s your turn to rest up. Stay home until your fever clears.” Corbeau scowled from his spot in a sunbeam on the couch in his apartment, a pounding headache blunting the edge of his irritation. “Can’t you just give me medicine? I have work to do.” Philippe cleared his throat, standing at attention next to Harmony near the hallway. “We can take care of things for the next few days, Boss. You should focus on getting well.”

on another note i feel like i've hit the very stereotypical ao3 writer block where the first half of the fic came so easily and writing was fast and smooth and the second half - even though i already have it planned out - is really fighting to not be put on paper and also i'm getting busy with work, so...time for some discipline. and also longer delays between chapters

He was fully dressed in his work attire. “Harmony,” he said. “I need you to come with us.” She rubbed her eyes. “Mm- what’s goin’ on.” “Philippe and I need your help.” “Why?” “I need my armor.” Harmony sat up, awake in an instant. Corbeau hadn’t called her that in months, and his voice was serious. “What’s happening?” “Get changed quickly. I’ll fill you in while we’re in the car.”

Armor - Chapter 34

Old Kalosian folklore spoke of an enchantment protecting Snowbelle, a curse of sorts that dug into the bodies of the evil-hearted with icicle claws and left a bone-deep chill buried in their souls. The land of perpetual snow was also a perpetually watchful one. Snowbelle doesn’t like bad men, old folks would say. Behave, or she’ll chase you out with the winter wind.  Corbeau didn’t believe those stories, of course. They were tales that grandparents in West Kalos told their grandchildren to put the fear of Arceus in them. But he had brought something back with him from Snowbelle a few days earlier, and his runny nose and sore throat and fever felt very much like curses.  He blew his nose for the millionth time that day. Corbeau had maintained his composure throughout the day’s meetings, and now that he was finally alone in his office, he let himself slump back in his chair. He rarely got sick – he credited his immune system, refined in the sludge and grime of Lumiose’s back alleys – so he allowed himself a moment to wallow in misery. Just as he shut his eyes, the elevator dinged. For a split second, a familiar wave of irritation rose in his congested chest, urged on by the discomfort of illness. He scowled. But then he recognized Harmony’s footsteps, crossing the marble walkway towards him.  Corbeau opened his eyes.

Expecting to see the name of one of the pharmaceutical distributors in Snowbelle, he checked the caller ID; instead, it was Marie. He knew what it was about. “I need to take this,” he said.  Philippe nodded. Corbeau stepped to the other end of the train station entrance before he picked up. “Good morning, Marie.” “Hello, dear. How’s Snowbelle City?” “We just arrived.” “Oh, good. I hope you have a lovely time.” He heard Marie shift on the other end, the rustle of pages turning in a notebook. “I talked to some of my friends in the industry about what you were asking about. It seems your hunch was right.”

That morning, Corbeau woke up from a very different dream.  He laid in bed for a moment as his alarm rumbled, blinking back into reality. The leftover sensations from his dream – loose hair, hands on his chest, the warmth of skin to skin – dissolved into the air of his dim, cool bedroom. One thing did remain: the faint floral scent that always lingered close around Harmony like a veil. He sat up and glanced to his left at the sleeping figure of his wife, still asleep on her side facing away from him. The curve from her shoulders to her waist rose and fell rhythmically as she breathed. Corbeau slipped out of bed, crossing to the bathroom with silent steps.

Armor - Chapter 31

new chapter up! work has been super busy (big pilot grant going in soon) and my concussion has been slowing me down, but hopefully i can get back to my usual pace soon!

The new year was approaching, and with it came a shift in the landscapes of Hyperspace. There was more snow, ice, and breeze; more than once, Harmony’s Rotom phone had to catch her before she fully slipped off a slick rooftop. Through the windows of some of the buildings in Hyperspace pockets Harmony could see decorations and gifts scattered across the floor. Ansha was still with her mother for the holidays, and Harmony was running low on donuts. But Vinnie had called asking her to check out an unusual-looking pocket in Wild Zone 12, and she could never turn down a chance to find rare Pokémon.  Harmony stood in front of the Hyperspace pocket with Delphox, waiting for her phone to analyze its energy. The fox Pokémon glared at an overly curious Vanilite floating nearby. “Looks like it’s mostly Fighting-types we haven’t met yet in here,” Harmony said. “Pretty big, too. This should be fun.” Delphox chirped. She liked battling new Pokémon just as much as her Trainer did. One dizzying, nauseating drop through interdimensional space later, Harmony landed on her feet in the Hyperspace pocket. It only took a moment for her to look around and regret her decision.

Harmony had promised Korrina she would take two shots with her, and the birthday girl did not like when promises were broken. So when Korrina bought everyone two rounds of shots for everyone, Harmony downed them back to back (with Urbain and Korrina cheering “chug!”). In a matter of ten minutes, she was feeling the alcohol, a warm, lightheaded buzz thrumming in her head accompanied by a loosened tongue. Corbeau stood at the bar, swirling a shot glass in his hand. He watched Harmony laugh with her friends.  Urbain bumped her shoulder, and she pushed him back playfully. Corbeau felt a pang of possessive jealousy in his gut. He swallowed it down with his second shot. Lucien leaned over the bar. “Should we stop her? Her friends were worried about her last time she drank.” “I’ve got an eye on her.” He pushed his empty shot glasses across the bar. “Is Philippe home with Violet?” “They’re having a movie night.” Lucien gave his husband’s boss a sly smile. “We blame you for the sugar high she’s been on the last 48 hours, by the way. She’s been off the walls.” “She wanted to eat the cookies we made. I couldn’t deny her her own creation.”

Armor - Chapter 29

i was playing volleyball and while my team was waiting for a game to begin, someone on the other side of the net decided that was the perfect time to practice spiking at max power...got nailed in the head by a dude with an absolute rocket for an arm. but i am okay and will rest. im just grumpy

Korrina’s birthday was shaping up to be a big event. Not only was she turning thirty, but she was officially passing the baton of being the Shalour City Gym Leader to her sister, and her fellow Gym Leader friends were traveling to Lumiose to celebrate the closing of the chapter. Unfortunately for Harmony and Naveen, it also meant that the two introverts were locked into a very full night of festivities. They commiserated over video call. “Did Korrina tell you where we’re going yet?” Harmony asked, flipping through her closet. “I’m trying to figure out the vibe.” Naveen was rummaging through his own wardrobe. “All I know is that we’re starting at Southpaw.” Someone yelled something in the distance on his end of the line. “Korrina says, and I quote: I wanna see some leg. Dress slutty.” “Tell Korrina it’s fucking below zero tonight and I will be in layers.” Naveen relayed the message over his shoulder and ignored Korrina’s exasperated response. “I told her.” “Thanks.”
