its that time again! lets talk about the design choices for the main group of our story, the lilygang!
first up, our side by sides with our previous designs! look at how these guys have grown <33 they also got more saturated.
with these designs, the old designs are still relevant. that is in fact how they looked BEFORE chapter 7 of Beasts by Another Name. Their new designs are how they look POST BBAN 7!
in a scrapped comic, i showed that the faeries were the ones to give the lilygang their new outfits after their old ones were damaged during the fighting that took place.
originally, all of the lilygang was wearing modified versions of their canon young outfits, with a bit of a mix of the canon crk outfits.
now theyre whole new beings woahw (*/ΟοΌΌ*)
now, lets look into the fun bits; the whys and hows!
getting into it, i do want to thank @orkuraoctoling for helping me brainstorm and pin down my ideas!!
starting off with white lily!
each of the new designs bring in elements of their dreaming dead costumes, which we already inspired by canon crk costumes. So White Lily has a part of her Moonflower Faerie dress that has patched up her old gown.
The biggest changes I've made to her are her scar placements (going up the side of her face a bit) and you'll notice that, compared to her hban design, her staff's lily is now open.
This change happened in chapter 6 of BBAN, where the magic forced her staff to bloom. This is a visual representation of her growth as a person, and also just a fun detail. However, because HBAN White Lily has grown to be different that CRK Willy, I wanted how I drew her staff to reflect that as well. So, I went with a mix between and Peace Lily and Calla Lily (leaning into their meanings of peace and rebirth for our lily!)
with Golden Cheese, i wanted her to feel a lot more defensive and battle ready, since she's increasingly become a bit more hostile towards the followers (shes 2-0 on spearing those guys...).
i also needed something that was backless for her, considering how her wings work. she needs the brand on her back to be visible!
so a backless halter top seemed like out best bet. but i didnt want to just make it turquoise! i wanted to make it as stylish and fun as she is.
so what i did was take inspiration from both her golden goddess costumes (both hban and crk) for the colors and designs you'll see on her new outfit. i also gave her a pauldron (which looks familiar huh?)! hban golden cheese has a lot of similarities to crk burning spice, so i thought add it in would be a fun detail.
dark cacao was probably the easiest to make a new design for.
all of his costumes consist of him wearing a hanbok, and i wasn't about to stop that now! my main issue was figuring out how simple to make it without him being the odd one out in terms of complex designs. (trust, it was shocking when he just had his base colors).
my issue with HBAN Cacao's design was that i was drawing him in more aristocratic clothing, which is my fault, i should have done more research for the best results. so orku and i went on the hunt for simpler hanboks to style him after.
additionally, i used one of dark chocos costumes as inspiration for the shaping of the clothes! its a bit difficult to tell, but the sleeves of his outfit are different than the main body. which i also did for cacao.
of course, i still made him purple. hes so purple. as well as slightly longer hair as time has passed! like the others, i added in little things from his DD costume, namely the pink and violet details and the Lily binyeo from is DALDOM chapter!
i didnt draw him with his cloak, because it hid the design way too mcuh, so lets all pretend its there in spirit.
HOLLYBERRY MY DARLING. why are you so difficult to draw? i feel as if i jumped her twelve times redrawing her hair and face.
she actually didn't change much, style wise. she still has her cloak, top and skirt, though i did saturate the colors and add depth.
her cloak was mended and the draping parts of it are in the same style as the skirts in her DD costume! but thats really the only connection she has to it. i also tried to lean more into whites to give her more influences from sugarcube!
hollyberrys changes are more based on things that have happened to her in the story. for example, i set her on fire! her hair has canonically been burnt off, sorry girl.
when it came to styling her hair, originally i had written that she had it in a bun with braids, but .... it didnt want to be drawn. so instead, i went with a similar hairstyle to what she had as unnamed huntress in crk!
im still ticked off i think i gen spent hours on her hair alone. watching the speedpaint was crazy...
finally, sweet PV. i gen struggle to see him in anything except his stupid as hell robes.
i did want to keep the robes, because theyre iconic as hell, but i spruced him up a bit! hes the only one who i took ZERO inspiration from his DD costume (because i dont like it and i want to chaaaaange it). i actually used his Pastel Blue costume as reference (peak costume btw hes so cutie).
so beneath his robe hes got a fancy blouse and jeans... hooray for modernity i suppose!
something i did want to give him, because its a strange detail i highly enjoy, is the weird little feet cutouts he has on his Viridescent Daydream costume. like what is up with that its so cute.
additionally, like cacao he has longer hair, which is slightly burnt because i ALSO set him on fire. but, unlike most pv costumes where his hair is tied in a low ponytail, i gave him a high one. because i had established that his long hair made him uncomfortable in his DALDOM chapter.
no low ponys for hban pv!!
and thats all for these goofballs!! it was fun to give them new designs!! now that ive done all of these, i can work on TUC's design and other side characters. plus more costumes!!! lets all cheer!!
