I forgot I had a tumblr...

And it’s pretty interesting reading about my thoughts and concerns from four years ago.  I forgot how worried and scared I was.  It was definitely intense to move to a new environment and to have my image of Japan being this magical fun place be shattered and rebuilt.  I wouldn’t say I have a negative image of Japan, but it’s certainly not all magical or fun and I can’t imagine spending the rest of my life here.  However, I’m grateful for the friends I’ve made here, and I love my job and current life, so I wanna enjoy it for as long as I can.    For some reasons, I had no desire to draw or make anything outside of my job for about two years, but I recently felt that itch again.  Hoping I can share something soon ^^

What the fucking fuck?!!!

Janice is taking over his class?  WHY?!

She openly made fun of the Commercial Art class calling it pointless and a joke and that it's for lazy students looking for an easy A and that her 2A is much more elite, and now suddenly she gets that course?  That doesn't make any sense.

Can anyone give me any more details on what's going on?  I don't understand how this happened :(

Is there any petition or something going around?  I'm totally out of the loop here!

30 Characters!!

I finished my first week of class... and now I have like a 10 day break because it's Golden Week, which is a Japanese holiday week...  honestly I don't really know too much about it, but if I get that many days off, why would I complain?  :P

Anyways, to make sure that we don't slack, every professor has made sure we have enough homework to stress over, so yayyyy -__-

For ONE class, they want me to do a hand drawn 50 frame animation which can be traced from a video... but that's still a lot of work.  Then in the same class, I have to at least do TWO out of five projects, which is:

1.  Create 30 characters (10 a day for three days), and pick 3 of the best and make a character sheet for them.

2.  50 figure sketches of people

3.  4 still life sketches with shading and everything

4.  4 PC illustrations with background

Seriously?  That's just for ONE CLASS D:  I started working on my 30 characters yesterday with a few other classmates.  I'm very tempted to just draw 30 pretty girls with gravity defying hair and call it a day, but I really really don't want to do that.  This work load is a pain in the ass, but it's there for a reason... so I won't half ass it.  The other three projects is something I already have experience with, so this 30 character challenge will be what I will focus most on.  

I am only allowing myself one pretty girl and one pretty boy, and the rest must be creatures, and stylized people who aren't pretty with nice bodies.  I wanna try doing fat people, old men, frumpy skinny kids, and stuff like that.  

As for how I'm doing at my school so far?  I stick out so much, I'm starting to learn to accept it -__-  I think I stick out more than the average foreign student, because I lack the one interest that brings together students no matter what country they're from.  Anime.  I have very little interest in anime; especially the ones that air on TV.  I like the process that goes into creating an animated series. I love reading up on how Naruto is animated, but as for the actual series... eh. I know, I'm weird.  But because of that, I have trouble keeping up with my classmates' conversation a lot of times because it revolves around anime and manga.  The other day I actually tried to watch an episode of one of the anime they were talking about so I could keep up, but I just could not get into it :(  I'm a bit worried that this will limit my skills somehow...

But aside from that little thing, I'm doing pretty good.  My penmanship is improving, and I'm learning to recognize more letters.  

Oh, and I forgot to mention I have an "official" study abroad blog now.  I'll still update this tumblr for more personal related posts, but if you'd like to read more details on my class structure and stuff, check it out!

Growing Up?

Sooooo I officially start living on my own from tomorrow, since my mom is going back to the states.  Although she drives me crazy quite often, I'll admit that I'm gonna miss her :(  It's quite silly that I still depend on my mother even though I'm gonna be 24 next month!  AHH!

I went to my entrance ceremony yesterday, which is exactly what it sounds like.  It's a ceremony to welcome new students.  You're supposed to dress nice.  The ceremony was very very boring because the whole ceremony consisted of introducing the professors, and having some 2nd year students from all majors talk about their experience so far.  I guess Japan doesn't emphasize the teaching of public speaking...  I could sorta understand the students reading off of a paper and mumbling the entire time, but it was really bazaar to see some teachers doing the same thing as well.  Yikes.  

Today was the actual orientation, and I met one of my teachers.  I was struggling quite a lot because I couldn't read the kanji he wrote on the board... nor the syllabus... nor the class schedule ><  I had a huge headache by the end of the orientation, so I stayed a bit after to talk to him.  Luckily, he was a very understanding and easy going teacher.  He told me that I'll make friends who'll help me out, and that in the mean time he'll try to simplify the letters for me.  He said that as long as I understand the language, I'll be okay.  Phew!  I just hope that the other teachers will be as understanding... 

Tomorrow is our first official class meeting, where the teachers will discuss the course and what materials we need to bring and such.  I looked over the supply kit the school mailed to my dorm.  I'm really impressed by the quality of the kit.  I'll post pictures later, but I got a huuuuge light box!  I feel like an animator from the 70's :)  I got a lot of cool stuff, but one of the things that made me really happy was the pack of color-aid paper, and the beautifully printed textbook on color theory.  I'm still iffy on my use of color, so this will definitely help me out a lot.  

I told myself I'll keep this post short, but it's not that short anymore.  Oops.  I'm hoping I won't feel too homesick tomorrow.  The newest issue of my favorite magazine is coming out tomorrow, so I'm hoping that will make me feel a little better :)

Jenny in Sapporo

Since I had a lot of spare time, I decided to head out to Sapporo for a few days.  The day after I left, a severe storm hit Tokyo and they ended up canceling about 500 flights o___O  They showed people kneeling down onto their knees on the streets to keep from getting blown away.  I was really lucky because I was originally gonna leave the next day.  I would have either been stranded at the airport, or freaking out mid-flight from all the turbulence ><

Sapporo got some of the bad weather too, but it wasn't as bad.  It's weird that we're getting snow in April though....  This is a view from my grandparents house.

Vans are not the best snow shoes, but so far I've been lucky enough to avoid falling on my face ;D

I got a lot of shopping done.  I definitely have enough to be comfortable in my dorm.  I just need to decorate it a bit more....  I'm not too good with interior decor, but I'm at least sticking to mainly pinks and greens to keep up with the theme so I guess it's okay.  My walls are still very bare and white though...  I don't know what to put up.  

Anyways, I'll be returning to Tokyo in a few days.  I'll post more relevant things then, since I'm on a crappy laptop at the moment.

Errands are mostly done...

Sorry for the lack of updates.  I've been exhausted running around getting things done.  I got my paperwork settled, physical done, and I picked up the keys to my dorm today... but I'm spending another night at my Uncle's because I don't have sheets or anything like that yet.  I bought them, but I arranged to have it delivered so I wont get it until tomorrow.  I'm trying to go with a green and pink theme for my dorm, but so far I've been finding mostly pink stuff.  I'm hoping that I can find some lime green curtains ^^

I went to my school interview two days ago.  I was so nervous and tired, I fell asleep as soon as I got home.  We all had assigned classrooms to go to, where we had to fill out some survey so they could find out more about each student.  Then in the middle of filling those things out, they would call a few students up for their interview.  The teacher who interviewed me was a small elederly man who wore Harry Potter glasses, a knitted peach colored cap, and some white robe.  He looked a bit eccentric... lol.  Anyways, he asked me what my worries were.  I told him I'm nervous about my limited reading and writing skills.  Then he laughed and told me that's something I'm gonna have to get over because this is Japan after all, and that if I can't at least learn to read/write words related to my field, I won't survive.

No shit?  I didn't come here to screw around.  This is my passion.  I live and breath it every day.  I have every intention of working hard to overcome this little issue I have so I can gain the skills I need to make this my career.  However, that doesn't mean I'm not worried.  I was a bit offended by what he said.  Why bother asking me such a question if you're gonna shoot me down for it?  I guess he said that because he thinks I'm a dumb foreigner who just came here cause I like Anime.  I'll be proving him wrong though.  No doubt.

I haven't had the chance to draw in a while because I've been so busy, but my uncle has this neat thing called the LCD Writing Tablet.  It's a little board you can write on, and when you hit Save you can upload the data onto your computer later.  I'm too lazy to do that so I just took a picture of it with my phone.  It's just a lame doodle of some guy who's probably a meth head, but I'm happy cause it's the first thing I've drawn in about a month.

Hoping I'll have more to show later on.  I don't start school until the 11th so I'm hoping that I'll have the chance to do some sketches.

Day One

Today was a Saturday, plus it was rainy and cold, so I didn't really go out.  I didn't feel like riding the stuffy and sticky trains, so I just shopped around the neighborhood to buy some small necessities.  I went to look at some cellphones, but the plans were really confusing and there were so many phones to choose from, I just kinda gave up and left.  Instead, I went to have lunch at this supposedly Hawaiian themed restaurant called Tsunami.  

I had an iced cuppacino which tasted pretty awesome.

Then my cousin insisted that we get dessert.  We couldn't decide between the Brings-you-happiness-banana-cake and the Tropical Hawaiian Parfait, so we went with both.

The food was good, but the service sucked.  At the beginning we had this cute guy, but then this girl took over and she preferred to folding napkins than to refill our drinks... or take away our empty plates.... or bring our tab.  

Anyways, during our lunch my cousin shared her experience at TDG (she is an alumni from the graphic design department).  It was nice to hear.  She said that it was the best two years of her life.  I'm hoping that I'll be able to say that as well.  I still have a lot to do before school starts...  The school sent me a huge todo list.  They're really nice though.  They sent me a sketchbook, and a mini exercise book on things to try drawing as a head start before class starts.  I can't remember them off the top of my head at the moment, but it included things like drawing people waiting for the train, drawing things around you in simplified geometric shapes, shading spheres and paying attention to the core shadows and such, and some other stuff.  I'll post more about it later in detail.  I also have to fill out some sort of introduction page to show the school what makes me appealing... or something like that.  It's a bit intimidating because I can't read a lot of it...  but that's something I have to get over.  I reaaaally need a droid phone because I use the kanji recognizing app often.  

I think that's about it for now.  More updates soon!  Also, I'm gonna try to get used to taking and posting pictures.

Tic toc tic toc

Twelve hours left before I leave for Tokyo.  OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT.

My stomach feels funny :(   I'v been packing and being emotional all day, so now I'm tired.  I still have more packing to do though.  I'm gonna be staying at my Uncle's house for a few days.  I'm supposed to attend some sort of interview for my school on the 28th.  I have no idea what it's about... perhaps they want to know what I'm expecting to get out of that school?  I'm hoping it's one-on-one.

Anyways, please wish me a safe flight.  I always get air sick, and since I'm actually really nervous this time, I'm sure I'll feel extra sick.  I have my stress relief pastilles, worry stone, and dramamine.  Let's hope that shuts me the hell up during the 11 hour flight towards the next chapter of my life :P

To Ruthie:  Sorry for not sending you the pic of my dress.  I ended up finding an adorable dress at this random clothing shop at Union Landing called Fashion Tunes or something today...  which turned out to be a third of what I paid for the dress I didn't like -___-  Oh well.  I'll send you a pic anyways once I'm over there :D
