“I just want to be good at something,” he sighed.
“You’re good at lots of things,” Mallory smiled, “You’re so athletic, and you can bake and make repairs around the house.”
“And hey—”
Alex looked up again, meeting Mallory’s gaze.
“I think you’re a good dancer, even if you don’t,” he grinned, reaching out to squeeze Alex’s hands reassuringly.”
Matching his smile, Alex squeezed his hands back.
“You can do the guy’s part, I don’t mind,” Mallory offered, knowing the spin would be coming up in just a moment.
It was a little awkward to manage with just how tall Mallory was, his arm bent to not raise it too high as Alex twirled him. There was no dress to twirl around him, only his t-shirt that was a little too big for his skinny frame which hardly moved at all with how slow the spin rotated him. They stepped out, then back in, the part of the dance that required the couple to embrace as they continued to spin.
Alex slowed to a stop, burying his head in Mallory’s chest. The music still continued to play, oblivious to the dance that had stalled to a halt.
There was a feeling in his chest like he wanted to say something, but he wasn’t sure just what.
‘I’m sorry’? ‘I missed you’? … ‘I think I like you’? Maybe all of it, maybe none of it.
“We can stop,” Mallory offered, his voice soft and small. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable again.”
“I’m fine,” Alex said quietly, his voice muffled into Mallory’s shirt. “I think I’m just tired.”
