Prize Winners of the 46th edition

The Prix de Lausanne has once again attracted young and promising dancers from all over the world. 74 out of the 78 selected candidates, finally participated in the 46th edition. Yesterday, 21 candidates were chosen at the Selections to compete in the Finals.

8 finalists were awarded a scholarship that provides them with the unique opportunity to choose among the 72 prestigious partner schools and companies of the Prix de Lausanne.

During the week, jury members have observed the candidates performing their classical and contemporary variations. This year, the Artistic Director of the HET National Ballet, Ted Brandsen, was President of the 9 jury member panel. As internationally-renowned dance professionals, they selected the 8 most promising talents.

For the non-awarded candidates, the Prix de Lausanne organises the Networking Forum on Sunday, February 4th. This gives the dancers the opportunity to still have the chance of being selected by representatives of our partner schools and companies. Therefore, the Networking Forum makes the competition worthwhile for all participants.

Results of the Selections 2018

Lausanne February 2nd, 2018: after 4 days of intensive work, 21 candidates have been qualified for the Finals of the competition.

From the beginning of the week, 74 candidates from all over the world have attended daily classes, coaching and rehearsals with prestigious professionals in the field. Carefully observed by 9 jury members, the candidates have all had one goal in mind: to perform their classical and contemporary variations on stage for a live audience at the Beaulieu Theatre.

Their potential was not only assessed by considering their technical facility, but also their ability to give an imaginative and sensitive response to the music. The candidates have had to master the traditional classical repertoire as well as the contemporary creations of Louise Deleur, Richard Wherlock, Jorma Elo, Mauro Bigonzetti or Wayne McGregor.

This year, the Artistic director of the HET National Ballet, Ted Brandsen, is President of the jury panel. As internationally-renowned dance professionals, they selected the 21 most promising talents who have outdone themselves the most.

The 21 selected candidates are from 10 different countries and the most represented is the United-States with 5 candidates, and then China with 4 candidates.

8 of the finalists will receive one of the scholarships/apprenticeships, for which the Prix de Lausanne is so well-known for. The Prize Winners receive the unique opportunity to choose among the most prominent schools and companies of ballet in the world.

78 selected candidates!

The video selection took place from October 26th to 29th, 2017 in Lausanne with a panel of 9 jury members, all professionals of the dance world. The candidates that applied to this video selection were 380 participants (297 girls and 83 boys) from 38 different countries. This is a record of participation! In 2017, they were 338 to apply. 69 candidates have been selected after this video selection and 9 candidates were preselected*. They are now 78 selected candidates that will participate in the Prix de Lausanne 2018.

CEO and Artistic Director of the Prix de Lausanne, Shelly Power:“Prix de Lausanne is excited to welcome 78 candidates for the 46th edition including 8 younger students. The lowered age range allows for students to enter professional schools when turning 15 years old (instead of age 16) which is often the professional school entry age. Furthermore, we split the junior and senior awards which we expect will further define potential and job readiness. We must not forget the students not selected this year and remind them that competition is only a part of a dancers life and a career depends on the will to prevail in these moments of disappointment. For those that have been accepted, we congratulate them and look forward to sharing in the personal and professional growth experience. Prix de Lausanne’s 46th edition is filled with exceptional talents inspiring us all to reach for the stars”.

New Associate Director

Stéphane Lagonico, President of the Board of Trustees, announces the appointment of Kathryn Bradney as Associate Director and the departure of Shelly Power, Artistic Director and CEO.

Following a first contractual round of 18 months, Shelly Power, Artistic Director and CEO of the Prix de Lausanne will return, for family reasons, to the United-States, after completing the upcoming 46th Prix de Lausanne in February 2018. She will be assuming a position of Executive Director at the Pennsylvania Ballet, in Philadelphia (United-States).

Since her arrival at the Prix de Lausanne, Shelly Power has focused her action on the execution of a new strategy which was defined by the Board of Trustees in the Fall of 2015. Despite her short tenure, Shelly Power has accomplished much, preparing the competition for an even brighter future. She maintained the Prix de Lausanne’s high standards in artistry, ethics and care for its participants, while enhancing the relationships with partner schools and companies. The Board of Trustees is delighted that Shelly Power’s innovations are being implemented.

We thank Shelly Power for her devotion during this period and wish her a successful future back home and the best in her new endeavors.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Kathryn Bradney as Associate Director. Kathryn Bradney is a retired Principal Dancer and ballet master from the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and co-founder, with husband Igor Piovano, of Igokat Dance Academy. Kathryn Bradney is a media producer at the Prix de Lausanne, and has been a member of the competition’s preselection jury for over 10 years. Kathryn Bradney will become acting Artistic Director and Executive Officer after Shelly Power’s departure.

A new project with our partner schools

Over time, the Prix de Lausanne has developed an international network of partners schools and companies. Among those are most famous institutions like the Royal Ballet School of London, the San Francisco Ballet School or the School of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier. For the 2018 edition, partners schools are invited to send their best students to Lausanne to offer a world premiere collaboration to the Prix de Lausanne public. This one-of-a-kind collaboration, initiated by the Prix’s Artistic Director Shelly Power, is titled the Partner Schools Choreographic Project (PSCP).

Stay tuned until January to discover the entire list of the partner schools who will take part in the project, the names of the dancers and the choreographer invited! This project is supported by the the FERL (Fonds pour l’équipement touristique de la région lausannoise), the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, the “Fondation des Amis” of the Prix de Lausanne, the BRP (Beau-Rivage Palace, Lausanne), Harlequin Floors and Dance West.
