About illustrators being impaired artists: the same, in other words, was the view expressed by the fine arts department at the college. My reply, if pressed for one, would go like this: as an artist you start a painting and then you follow it until you come to a pleasant place. As an illustrator you have to lead the picture to a predetermined end. In other words, in art anything goes. In illustration there are criteria. I would of course agree with any artist who claims that the overwhelming majority of illustrations in the books on display in picture book shops are an insult to the printed page and - if the story is half decent - to the words they should accompany.  I would also point out to that artist that the overwhelming majority of what hangs on the walls of art galleries is no less of an insult to to the nails on which it is hanging. ~ AG

This is a hard pill to swallow, but some people ARE better than others. It has nothing to do with money or status and has everything to do with mindset. People who do better in life , hold themselves and the people around them to a higher standard. They don't use excuses, they don't have a victim mindset, they just prioritize their happiness and their dignity and they don't accept less than that and that does make them inherently better. ~ @valenoffline
