The Captain of the S.S Morian that Kirovic travels on. He’s a friendly man who likes to see the different islands and is well known for taking good care of his crew.
Kirovic got some new clothes, although, he may lose the vest later as it’s kind of a pain. Plus I’ll finally start working on his character page today since I think I’ve procrastinated on it long enough.
I made a slideshow about how to create a fictional character… I got most of the information from the ‘start writing fiction’ (free) course on the OpenUniversity website and found it incredibly useful so here’s a visual version for you :)
If you stand on the very edge of Binerex II on almost any night and look towards Binerex I, this is the sight that will greet you. The moon looks really bad but hey first attempt and all. I’m mostly procrastinating doing character info, tribe info, and languages.
I’m thinking about making a language for the Arac... Maybe one for the Web Dwellers and the Tunnelers, and then another for the Web Readers. I’m not sure yet, but, it’s a possibility.
The trading ship that Kirovic travels on, the S.S Morian, which was named after the captains eldest daughter.
It’s only a rough sketch for the time being, I’ll try and digitalize it once I get out of class. I’ve never really drawn anything like this so sorry if it sucks!
Just a little something to give a quick idea of my character. His name is Kirovic (as Arac do not have last names) and he was the oldest student Web Reader in the Elder tribe of Arac, but fortunately for him (as he was more interested in traveling) he was replaced as next in line as the tribes Oracle by the addition of a younger female Web Reader.
At the age of 50 (when Web Readers reach maturity) he left his tribe to go explore other islands with his companion spider Gizo, who at this time is not pictured. He stands about 3ft 7 in tall without his spider legs stretched, and at his full height, he reaches 4 ft 9 in.
Upon leaving he did not take a bag in which to hide his extra legs in, and instead uses them to gain easier access to places otherwise unreachable to him (especially on the traders airship he travels on).
He’s quite easy to get along with, though many are weary to try, mostly freaked out by his six eyes, or by the large spider that normally sits on his shoulder, or in his mop of curls.
When down on money, he often does quick fortunes for anyone willing to give him anything.
Being polite isn’t exactly a strong suit for him, though he does try on occasion, it just normally tends to come out wrong.
Lastly, his biggest problem seems to be getting in to trouble to big for him to handle and having to be bailed out by the few friends he has made on the airship.
The Arac and Binerex I & II
The Arac
Arac are a Humanoid Spider race, while they have the torso, head, arms, and hands of a human, they also have the cephalothorax, abdomen, legs, and spinnerets of a spider. The females also have small fangs protruding from the sides of their mouths.
There are three different ranges of skin tones that the Arac can have. They can have a tone of gray (normally a lighter grey, but darker are more common in different tribes), pure white (this one is more common in the Tunneler Arac's), or a range of human skin tones (this one is reserved only for Web Readers). All Arac have either black or white hair, and black or red eyes (eye numbers range from 2-8 depending on how human you want the face).
There are three sub races of the Arac that have different qualities as well.
The Web Dwellers
This sub species dwells in the treetops of Binerex, having built multiple communities with their webs, they are more relaxed and do less work than their Tunneler brethren.
Web Dwellers stand about 5-7 feet tall, males being on the shorter end of the spectrum and females on the taller, and they weigh in anywhere between 120-200 pounds, with again males being on the lower end. This sub race is more likely to have a gray toned skin and black hair. They live about 200-250 years.
Both males and females have two types of weaving silk, they each share one type that oddly does not come from the spinnerets, but instead is created in the stomach from their main prey, the Glowing Spirits (They're basically overly large butterflies that glow a bright green, blue, and red.) and is vomited up and used to create solid materials such as what their homes are made out of, as once it starts to solidify it is easily molded, and once completely dry it is hard as metals.
Females also have a building silk that is from the spinnerets that is used to make bridges between homes and tribes. It is also the same silk used to make a flexible bridge between the two Binerex islands, making travel between the two much quicker.
The second silk that males have, is better for weaving into clothing or blankets, it is also possible to dye this silk, which makes vibrant colors for more decoration.
The Tunnelers
Found on Binerex II, the Tunnelers have made their home in the mountainous second island, living alongside a small group of Dwarves. Smaller than their Web Dwelling relatives, the Tunnelers stand 3-5 feet tall, with males still being smaller, and instead weight 80-120 pounds with females weighing more. This sub race is more likely to have white skin, white hair, and red eyes. They live about 100-150 years.
Like their relatives the males and females each have two types of silk, only, the one they share is the building silk that comes from the spinnerets. Males then have a corrosive silk made in the stomach from the mineral dust that covers all of their food (Yes, they crave that mineral). This silk is vomited up to help them tunnel through the rock, as it makes it easier for them to break it apart.
Females have a second silk that burns for long periods of time and at high temperatures, which is also made in the stomach, but instead comes from eating the broken sacs from which their young are born. This silk is used in the Dwarves forges, and therefore they are often left to care for the unhatched young to keep their silk coming.
The Web Readers
The most human sub race of Arac, these rare ones actually have a full human form, they instead just have eight spider legs protruding from their backs, these few do not produce silk. Web Readers are very few in number, each tribe only ever having two at a time, an elder and a student. It is unsure how they are born, or if they are at all (as they believe they are a gift from the stars), and on the off chance that there are two students instead of one, one will be sent off to either join another tribe, or be allowed to travel. (The Web Dwellers prefer female Web Readers, while the Tunnelers prefer males.)
Web Readers stand about the same as the Tunnelers, being only 3-4 feet tall without their spider legs outstretched, they can reach about 5 feet when extended. Males and females are all about the same size and weight, and they only range between 90-110 pounds. This sub race is the only one that has human skin tones, with an equal chance of having black or white hair, and equal chance for black or red eyes. They live the longest, anywhere from 100-500 years.
Since they only have the legs protruding from their backs, they are able to fold their legs up against their back to appear more human. On the off chance that one is allowed to travel, a specialized bag is made for them to wear on their back, that allows their legs to rest inside comfortably and fold out with ease whenever they are needed.
Each Web Reader also has a companion spider (it's different from a normal spider because it's more intelligent and about the size of an outstretched hand) that teaches them how to read web writings.
Arac Jobs
Web Dwellers do two different types of jobs to trade for needed or wanted items. They will either trade their building skills, or the males will trade clothing they have made. They don't have jobs within their own communities.
Tunnelers trade metals for more tools for their Dwarf companions, so they can continue to sell melee weapons that brings in the most trade in the mountain area. In their community, the males tunnel for metals and ores, while the females help in the forge or in the hatchery.
Web Readers don't have jobs outside of the community, as they work as a tribes oracle. Each morning their companion spider spins a new web in the center of the community, and as a tradition, each day they come to hear what the spider has told the Web Reader of what's to come. They also relay messages from other tribes that have been sent through other spiders.(I will explain more on this later, I promise!)
Tribe elders have their own jobs, which is to map the stars each night, keeping track of any new stars, or any that might have died.
Arac Relationships
There are two different types of partnerships in the Arac race, Mates and Lovers. Who you become Mates with is not in your power, each year the tribes has a ceremony for the young who have come of age(It depends on the tribe for the age but it's normally between 20-25) and the tribes leader along with the tribes Web Reader determine who will be Mates by their abilities in either building or weaving. The only exception is if a pair approaches the tribes leader and the Web Reader to ask permission to become Mates, but it is not common for them to agree.
Lovers are chosen and often the ones that each Arac ends up building a home nest with. On some occasions, Mates have become Lovers as well and the pair are exclusive with each other. Unlike Mates, which is always one female and a male, Lovers can be any mix.
Web Readers are excluded from Mates as it is unsure what kind of offspring would be created between the two, and it is uncommon for another Arac to approach a Web Reader about becoming Lovers. If they do have any relationship, it is either between another tribes Web Reader, or a member of a difference race.
Arac Beliefs
All of the Arac do not believe in a God, they believe in the stars, which they call the Life Lights. They are one of the races who believe that when someone is born a new star enters the sky that is tied to them, and when one dies, so does the other. They also believe that when a star falls, it means the one it was tied to fell from Abovem, and that if someone where to pick that fallen star up, they would be holding the fallens soul.
The tribes also believe that spiders can see six years into the future because of the stars, and while they are the furthest from being a spider, only the Web Readers can actually speak with them. Which is why they are seen as the Oracle in a tribe, and speak for the spiders whose voices cannot reach the other Arac.
Clothing is the one thing there are split beliefs on, as the Web Dwellers and some of the Web Readers(At least those that live in the trees) have no problem with wearing shirts(Since well, most of them can't really wear pants...), and most Web Readers have no problem wearing the same clothes as the races that live on the ground. This only started after TAW, as they didn't want to drive away those that came to the island as the Web Dwellers wanted to be able to trade for their goods, and therefore adopted the custom of wearing the clothing they could.
Tunnelers on the other hand, don't wear clothing, as they believe clothing cuts your tie with your Life Light (Star) as it is obstructed from your soul. If the Dwarves who live with them mind, they don't care and won't change their ways for them.
Death
The Web Dwellers will hold a mourning ceremony in memory of the departed, before burning the body and scattering it across the island.
Tunnelers will hold a lively ceremony honoring and remembering the departed, and afterward the body is used to feed the young, as they believe eating the body will transfer some of the memories and knowledge onto those who eat it.
Binerex
The islands of Binerex I and II are located closer to the south than the north, resulting in warmer weather with seasons of high temperature, slightly lower temperatures, and a season of rain.
Binerex I
Covered mostly in dense forests, with trees standing well over 40 meters (131 feet) high, makes it a great home for the Web Dwellers, but due to not having as much ground, the Tunnelers didn’t thrive as much, having only small burrows that they abandoned after being able to reach Binerex II. These burrows have now been inhabited by the other races that came to live on the island after TAW, and with the building expertise of the Arac have made life on the ground much easier. There aren’t many animals native to this island, and so when settlers came from other islands they brought cattle with them. The ground has also been found to be good for planting crops, allowing for everyone to have plenty of food and tradable items.
50% of the population is Arac
15% of the population is Elves
11% of the population is Human
24% of the population is made up of races still not known
Binerex II
Unlike the main island, Binerex II has little to no trees, and is instead a mountainous range rich with minerals, metals, and ores. The mountains are filled with tunnels and mines, along with home burrows and forges. On the North Side of the island there is an airship port where they deal with trade for both islands. The ground doesn’t make for very good planting, so if crops are needed they have to trade with the larger island, yet unlike Binerex I the second island has an abundance of small animals. (like foxes, rabbits, rodents, etc.)
Most of the population is Arac, though there is a small handful of Dwarves that share the mountain with them, very few other races inhabit the island, but the few that due are yet unknown.
Government
There isn’t much control on the island, as most of those who inhabit it are rather peaceful, though each town/tribe has their own leaders appointed leaders who will come together for a counsel on occasion to speak of trading and how well each is fairing on the islands. If by chance a leader would try to take other towns for his own, the counsel will decide what is to be done about it.
