hi there, i’m korean-american born into a full korean family. just wanna address something about the “jungkook calling jimin the n word.” the word jungkook uses, as lots of people have said, depends HEAVILY on the context. usually, people (of older age, like middle-aged people including my dad) would use that word to describe cute, dark animals such as cats, dogs, etc.; my dad often calls the black stray cats that come to our house by that word. HOWEVER, the context in which jungkook used it is indeed racist and it means the n word. i’m not defending jk at all because of my knowledge on that word; even with context, what he said was racist. it’s undeniably racist.

This whole Jimin being racist thing was debunked by fans who speak Korean since the majority of the ones who don’t speak it were using Naver translate to jump to conclusions because it only brings up the negative connotation rather than all other aspects of why the term is used. It’s mainly international, non korean speaking, fans spreading this without listening to the people who speak Korean.

Also I wouldn’t say Naver is wrong or that people are wrong for referring to it. I was learning Korean for a while and everyone suggested it, of course it’s not replacement for a native speaker, but it seems to be the most recommended and reliable Korean dictionary. Even the Daum dictionary says it means “colored,n*gg*r,negro”. It is undeniable that it is a slur when referring to black people but there seems to be no solid conclusion on whether or not Jimin calling JK it is racist.

According to Naver’s dictionary 깜둥이 is the equivalent of calling someone “darkie” or “nigger”. I saw some arguing otherwise, but I’m going to go ahead and say even if he didn’t mean it to be racist, Jimin calling Jungkook a word that is derogatory towards black people is still racist, not to mention, colorist.

What people don't realize is the colorist remarks hurt. black people can be very colorist. In songs they always talk about redbone caramel honey skin tones never chocolate. in music videos there will be one dark skin girl in the back surrounded by these light skin chicks in the front. It made me depressed and made me feel undesirable. I'm over it now because fuck them but imagine how the idols feel. Its not a joke. If you get bullied and the person says they were joking does it hurt any less?

Jackson can’t and will never be able to decide If what he did was offensive ot disrespectful, because he’s not a part of the culture. There was people who got offended for a reason and he should have apolgized properly. He’s more leaving towards blaming the ones who were upset for feeling so.

Honestly kpop can be and mostly is problematic. If you're sensitive to it then it ruins your day or makes you angry I say run now. I've been in to kpop for 10 years and honestly they never apologize and when they do they follow it up with more problematic behaviour. It never changes.

I’m so so so late responding to this, but for anyone else who feels the same, something being problematic doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy or like it. Don’t feel pressured to drop a group you like because they did something negative. It’s up to you. Unfortunately I think most groups have something they’ve done that’s problematic, which is normal for people. - c

Yugyeom colorist joke on V LIVE?

I’ve recently seen that people are accusing Yugyeom of making a colorist joke on vlive. The joke in question was “what is burnt rice in English? Bobbi brown” The joke isn’t racist or colorist, but a play on words, if you listen carefully you’ll see that “burnt rice” and" Bobbi Brown" sound really similar. 

I understand why some people may think that the joke is colorist, if they don’t know Korean. But I find this situation embarassing…

And, since I know that some of you will keep pushing this situation regardless of the explanation, I’ll also clarify two other things: 

1. Yugyeom DID NOT make the joke, his friend did. This misunderstanding could have been avoided by simply watching the vlive… 2. Yugyeom didn’t even UNDERSTAND the joke. In fact he also asked “Why is the burnt rice Bobbi Brown?”. But obviously this part was cut out from every screenshots and clip that are circulating around. 

This whole situation shows how antis are hitching to find a chance to drag EVERY GOT7 member. And also people in general. I’ve seen loads of tweets calling YG racist and all other sorts of name. I’m honestly tired of this, if this same situation was to happen with any other idol I’m pretty sure that before jumping to conclusions people would have tried to verify the situation, instead of believing random screenshots taken out of context.

In my opinion, this joke isn't problematic, ESPECIALLY when you get the language word play. Although I'm glad that people are now more active and willing to discuss such issues, this is just taking a wordplay and blowing it out of proportion.
