study less study smart
I decided to share my notes taken from this amazing 1 hour Youtube lecture by Marty Lobdell. i really liked him and his tips, i think they are super effective and cover a lot of situations! i highly recommend it!!!!! wow
but here are the tips and examples Marty mentions, so if you donât have the time to go through the full hour, you can just scroll down. hope this helps somebody!
Break your study time in chunks with breaks
most students lose focus at 25 minutes
itâs a mistake to keep going once you do, since you wonât actually learn anything and youâll hate every minute of it
so when you start losing focus take a 5 minute break
do something nice like talking to someone or listening to music
itâs something you practice so with time youâll be able to work for more time without losing focus
in the end of the study session have a big reward you look forward to
Create a study area
environment highly affects the way you act. Bedrooms are for sleeping, kitchens for eating: youâll feel sleepy in your bedroom and hungry in the kitchen. So if you have a study area, itâll be easier to start studying and staying focused.
study in a specific room like an office or school library if you can
if you have to study in your bedroom use a specific object you only use for studying: a lamp/desk. Make it a no-distraction, away from your bed, blank walls area.
The more active the learning, the better
80% active learning 20% passive
ask yourself: is it a concept or a fact?
learning a concept: understand/grasp/know it
put it into your own words
really think about the meaning of it
relate it with something you already know
teach somebody else. Recapitulate what youâve learned. Talk out loud even if you donât have anyone to teach - talk alone. Or at anyone that listens.
learning a fact: memorize it
use mnemonics
Acronyms (e.g. colours of the rainbow RoyGBiv â red orange yellow green blue indigo violet)
Coined sayings - anything popular or sayings youâve heard since you were a child.
Interacting images â work even better if theyâre weird. Creative associations make you never forget specific details. (e.g. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories: picture a fat cat â each cat has 9 lives)
any time 2 things are highly similar but not the same you will get maximal interference!! USE mnemonics!! (e.g. afferent vs efferent neurons: SAME - Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent)
Be a part of  study groups
others can help you in ways you never thought before
Recognizing VS remembering
never confuse the two
while reviewing a chapter you may recognize concepts but not actually know them
and when you get to the test you wonât be able to remember any of it
so quiz yourself without looking at it
or stop in a page of your notes/textbook and ask yourself what is the concept immediately after and before it
Get your REM SleepÂ
get ~8 hours so you donât undo your studying
this is how your brain stores permanent memories
without it youâre ability to remember seriously decreases
most people donât even begin to take the advice but itâs simple: sleep better. Do better.
Thereâs 162 hours in a week. There is time.
reflect on what you are doing with your time and what activities you have to prioritize to succed as a student
Taking notes is vital.
right after the class take 5 minutes to expand everything youâve jotted down, give it depth.
NOT hours later. You wonât remember half the things you wrote down.
Ask your questions to class mates and teachers.
teachers want you to succeed and itâs more than ok to ask your question in the teacherâs office or in the next class
How to use a textbook: SQ3R technique
Survey Question Read Recite Review
Survey: skim through the entire chapter in a couple of minutes.
Raise questions: e.g. what is osmosis? What is this graphic about? What is a prototype?
it causes you to look for answers and youâll find the information better once you actually study it after. If you intend to find something you learn it better.
Start studying for tests early.
donât undo yourself. You should only be reviewing the days before the test. donât leave it till the last minute!
(donât just scroll through this!!!! really think about these methods and how you can actually implement them so you can benefit from them!!! these actually work but only if you put them into practice boo good luck!)
Just gonna repost all these study tips, cuz why not. But I'm gonna try to make some original posts too.
a real ass guide to life
thereâs a lot of shit on here about lighting candles and waking up early to see the sunset and if we are being hella honest, no one actually does that. u probably donât own candles or if u do there in a closet and the only time you wake up early all year round is never. so hereâs a guide to actual human beings.
-wake up when you need to. donât wake up at 5 to âjournalâ and âmeditate.â sleep is more important. if you have a class at 9, wake up at 8. itâs simple. - eat something. it doesnât have to be avocado toast. just have a bagel or a bowl of cocoa puffs. - have ur meds if u take any - attempt to look nice. at least brush your hair and your teeth. but honestly no one cares how u dress. if you wanna dress like a stripper, then dress like a goddamn stripper. honestly no one cares. (but if ur in hs try to follow the dress code a little bit?) - wear makeup if u want, or if you donât then donât. - ur probably not gonna exercise or stretch. who cares. i dont. your friends donât. if ur feeling up to it then go jog 4 miles, but if ur not then donât. - actually try to have a plan of what ur doing for that day. attend ur classes, and do ur work. ur education is hella important. FUCKING DO IT. kill those grades, murder everyone else in that class, impress and surprise ur teacher, parents, and everyone else who thought u couldnât do it - attempt to be social. make plans with friends and try to go. it can be lowkey and only like an hr. eat pizza or go to a bar. just have fun. - eat healthy. eat a hamburger when u really want a hamburger and eat a large pizza when u really want a large pizza but try ur hardest to eat healthyish. - watch ya shows. who doesnât love some amazing netflix binges? watch it. do it. - actually read. books are honestly the best. at least try to pick up the first harry potter. - go to sleep before 2AM!!!!!!ÂĄÂĄÂĄÂĄÂĄÂĄÂĄ sleep is hella important. - shower. you donât need to buy expensive bath bombs or candles and have a fancy bath and coat ur skin in so much lotion that you are a walking wet rag, but try to smell somewhat pleasant. - do what u want. just make sure itâs legal. have sex, travel, learn how to code, be with ur family, have a family, marry someone nice, build an empire, be fierce, be strong, but most of all: be happy. you live once on this planet. live it to the fullest. and donât let ANYONE bring you down. not a girl, not a guy, not a parent, or a so called friend. keep your standards high, and heels higher.
New term, new start.
3 Study Methods You Should Use More Often
This was originally for an article writing assignment, but I thought âwhy not write something I can also post on my blog?â so here are three study methods that I havenât seen a lot of in the studyblr community but are definitely worth mentioning.
The Leitner System
Flash cards have remained one of the most popular ways to study. Some people use them to memorize vocabulary, remember answers to specific questions, or even associate dates with events. Although the use of flash cards is convenient, their effectiveness has been reduced due to most peopleâs habits of prioritizing each card equally and therefore spending too much time memorizing the information on them.
The Leitner System, created by a German popularizer of science named Sebastian Leitner, is a more efficient method of studying that implements the concept of spaced repetition. All the cards start off in one pile. You would first scan through these cards, then test yourself. Each card you answer correctly goes to a second pile, while those you answer incorrectly should be revised then placed at the bottom of the pile. When you review the cards in the second pile and get them correct, they will be promoted to a third pile. An incorrect card will always get demoted to the first pile, even if they had previously been promoted to the last pile.
The reason why this method is so effective is that you end up reviewing the first pile of cards more frequentlyâthe cards you donât know very well. Some people choose to review their Stack 1 cards every day, Stack 2 cards every other day, Stack 3 cards once every three days, and so on.
Once all your cards have been promoted to the highest box, study them thoroughly and then start over. The continuous revision trains your speed so that you may reach fluency, which allows you to recall the information faster.
Timed Memorization
The name tells it all: you memorize a certain text within a time limit, normally around five to ten minutes depending on your fluency and memorization abilities. When the timer starts, you begin memorizing. When time is up, you flip to the next page, even if you havenât finished the previous page yet. Continue until youâve gone through all your material.
Timed memorization helps you to discipline yourself because your brain thinks that thereâs no time for messing around; you have to do this here and now. Make sure to repeat the things you missed and revise everything frequently. This method is actually one of the most effective for cramming as it gives a better coverage than if you spend a whole half hour memorizing one subtopic.
The Memory Palace or Mind Palace
Sound familiar? In BBCâs Sherlock, the âhighly functioning sociopathâ uses this method to remember vital information and facts. A mind palace is a systematic arrangement of information, each detail corresponding to a specific object in a familiar place. To ensure that you really remember everything, the objects have to appear shocking and conspicuous.
Hereâs an example: if I wanted to memorize âcrimson, 11, delight, petrichor (the smell after rain)â, aside from imagining Amy Pond or the Doctor saying it, I would first choose a place, letâs say my school. Iâd imagine myself walking up to the front gate and seeing that the entire building has been painted the color of bloodâcrimson. The building would then rise as though it were lifted from the earth and crumble into rubble, controlled by Eleven, the character from Stranger Things. Now, since I canât really picture delight specifically, Iâd probably end up visualizing a colossal sign that simply reads âdelightâ posted in front of my school. As for petrichor, Iâd imagine curves rising out of the puddles on the asphalt after a rainy night, a visual representation of the smell of the rain. Of course, these visualizations have been created to suit my memory. (I wouldnât know if you watched Stranger Things.)
I used this method when memorizing case studies for geography, although I chose to visualize fictional places from television series and cartoons. Some people do opt to create artificial places, but these often become blurry and are easily forgotten.
As with any study method, repetition is vital to storing the information in your long-term memory. Visit your âpalaceâ as often as you can. Soon enough, youâll remember the data as well as you remember the place associated with the data.
So there you have it, three lesser known methods of studying that have proven to be immensely efficient. Now, there is no âcorrectâ way to study, but there are methods that can ease your learning process.
More tips, I'm gonna use them for my next test.
the no bullshit guide to getting your shit together: for the lazy student
Letâs be honest: time management and organization? Theyâre really hard. Sure, at first you might feel like youâve gotten the hang of them, that youâre in control of your life. But how often have you fallen off the wagon? Procrastinated on one thing and the next moment, youâre behind in all your classes? I know that sometimes laziness feels like a part of who you are, but honestly, fuck that. Do you really want to give up your success for the disinterest of a moment?
If your answer is no (it better be no, or you really need to get your priorities straight), letâs get to it.Â
STEP ONE: BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
âThis class doesnât even matter.â âI donât care about my grades.â âI can finish this the day before.â Sound familiar? You might feel great now, but when youâre staring down at your report card later, itâll feel like you just got punched.Â
This is a cliche, but the greatest obstacle to your success is yourself - especially the lies you tell yourself! Sit yourself down and be honest about what you need to improve on. Be as blunt as you can, but for godâs sake, donât throw yourself a pity party! Thereâs no use agonizing over what you canât change. Instead, set realistic, achievable goals, and make a game plan. Struggling with math? Go to extra help. Behind in all your classes? Stay in for a couple nights and actually work.Â
STEP TWO: STOP WITH THE FANCY SHIT
Now you know what your goals are, but maybe you want some inspiration, so you log on to tumblr and are instantly bombarded by all these beautiful, well lit shots of the most gorgeous bullet journals, planners, and notes. Impressive, right? Well, Iâm gonna let you in on a little secret: theyâre all useless! A simple phone planner works just as well, if not better, than a fancy agenda, because youâll always have it on you, itâs not a hassle to carry around, and you donât feel obligated to make it look pretty.Â
Riddle me this, where are you going to find all this extra motivation to keep prettying up your bullet journal? To write all your notes in perfect, colour coded printing? There arenât many times in life where taking the easy was out will actually benefit you, so take advantage! Stop wasting your time; get a phone planner and write your notes in your natural goddamn handwriting.Â
STEP THREE: CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Yep, your entire room - not just your study space! This one can be put on the back burner for a bit if youâre on a really pressing deadline, but I wouldnât recommend it. Iâm notoriously messy, and if I donât watch myself, Iâd find myself in dirty-laundry-and-old-notes hell. A little bit of organized chaos is fine, I even encourage it! But try working when your desk is covered in mounds of paper and you have nowhere to put your laptop â itâs just not conducive to success.Â
Keeping your entire room clean is a way to stave off stress, frustration, and even embarrassment, because nobody wants to show potential roommates how much of a mess they are.Â
STEP FOUR: ACTUALLY WORK
Yeah, I know what youâre thinking: âactually work? Who does this girl think she is?â Iâd probably think the same thing, except Iâve learned the valuable lesson of sucking it the hell up, and you will too. When you get home from work, grab a snack and work. When you have a free period, figure out whatâs due and work. Stop reasoning yourself out of work: youâre not going to finish this later, and that will be on the test. Thereâs really not much to say about this one, because itâs the step that requires the most raw effort, and youâre really only going to find that within yourself. Tell yourself whatâs at stake, and realize that, by setting the standard for your mediocrity now, youâre potentially trapping yourself in a cycle that will last for years.Â
STEP FIVE: CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK
Maybe youâve been on top of your shit for a day, a week, or even a month, and thatâs really great. But then⊠you fail. You miss a deadline or you bomb a test. So what do you do now? Do you allow yourself to fall back into your old habits? Fuck no! Everyone fails, even that studyblr with those perfect bullet journal photos and a perpetually clean study space. Iâm going to tell you something thatâll sound really strange: you should value your failures, especially if you worked hard to avoid them. What?! Be HAPPY about failing when I actually TRIED? Yeah, you heard me right. If you donât know how to handle failure, then when you inevitably experience it, your reaction will be much worse.Â
Failing hurts, and boy, I know how embarrassing it can be. But learning how to deal with failure, and especially how to keep trying after it happens, is an invaluable lesson.Â
STEP SIX: TREAT. YO. SELF.
Disclaimer: Iâm not suggesting you treat yourself after the most basic of tasks, because please. Treat yourself when you know you goddamn well deserve it. Remember that âall work and no play makes jack a dull boy.â If all you do is study and do your homework, then, pardon my french, your life sucks. If you donât have friends, play a video game! Eat an entire jumbo chocolate bar! Indulge in whatever the fuck you want, you deserve it. Iâm someone that has trouble prioritizing future benefits over immediate gratification, so by allowing myself little pleasures, I save myself from crashing and burning.Â
Hope these tips helped, but remember to take them with a grain of salt - youâre you and Iâm me, and different things work for different people. Good luck!
School starts in two days and I'm so not prepared.
This was my first try at something like this and I guess it turned out somewhat ok. I hope it helps someone. I got the main inspiration from this.
Hello guys! Iâve been getting a lot of requests to do studying tips so here it is! I am by no means an expert but as a student, I wrote this based on what Iâve learnt as I struggled and pulled myself through my school life!
 KNOW YOUR STRENGTH & WEAKNESSES
As a student, I personally feel that itâs most important to know where your forte lies. By identifying your weakness you would know the subjects that you should tackle rather than focusing on the thing youâre already familiar with. You should spend more time on your weaker areas compared to your strong one, however do not get complacent!!!
 TIME MANAGEMNET
Studying for exams are always a race against time, thus mapping out the things you should do is always important. I donât have a strict time schedule where I allocate certain timing for my subjects; however, I do time myself when I do papers. For example, when I was doing math papers as revision for o levels, the duration given for one Emath paper was 2 hours. Thus, when I practiced and did my papers, I would only give myself 1 and half hours. This will train me to do my papers faster with maximum accuracy. Youâre also required to have a good grasp of your subject to be able to complete questions faster.
SLEEP & EAT WELL
Somehow during exam periods, a lot of my friends start sacrificing their sleep and food to study. And I canât emphasize enough how wrong this is. Most of my friends, who do this, end up making more careless mistakes in their paper and thus winding up with lower marks. Lack of sleep is a serious flaw and can jeopardize you paper immensely. If youâre tired, rest; donât try to push yourself because your brain wonât be able to absorb the information any longer. Itâs the same situation with the food, if you sacrifice your meals, you may end up getting gastric that may just affect your performance during the paper.
MAKE NOTES
Well duh right? Everyone makes notes, but more importantly, you need to make notes that you would want to read. As much as the process of writing and remembering is important, if you like the way you notes look, youâll feel more inclined to read it. Thus, this is partially why I enjoy making notes that look pretty to me.
 TAKE BREAKS
Never ever forget to take breaks. Iâd recommend a 15minutes break every 2 hours. Pushing yourself to sit there continuously will only cause you to lose focus, causing you to become restless. Different people have different attention span, thus never ever compare yourself to your friends and force yourself to sit down and study as long they do. Find out what works for you and what doesnât.
 LISTENING TO MUSIC
I looooove music. But I have to admit, listening to music while Iâm trying to memorize some lit quotes, isnât working out for me. Thus, I donât recommend listening to music as youâre trying to absorb content heavy subjects. However, if its question based subjects like math, by all means. Check out my studying playlist!
 KNOW YOURSELF
You need to know what method helps you work best. Writing? Auditory? Everyone has a different style of learning that works best for him or her. Some people need to read their content out loud for themselves to hear before they can memorize, however this does not work for everyone. Maybe youâre the type that needs to draw diagrams to colour code your notes. Whichever the case is, its best to know yourself, and the style of learning that best suits you.
 STRESS MANAGEMENT
Stress isnât necessarily bad. A little bit of stress can get you off your lay bum and to start doing some work. However, being overly stressed will just backfire and may cause anxiety problems. This is why itâs essential to keep a healthy balance of work and play. Donât overwork yourself and drive yourself into a corner, this isnât healthy for you or your studies. Taking conscious effort to distress can help keep a pleasant attitude and mind thatâs good for learning.Â
DELETE DISTRACTIONS
If you find yourself being constantly distracted by your phone or a particular app, delete it. Lock your phone in the drawer or temporarily delete your social media apps. Downloading focus aps can help you too. Apps like helps block access to some websites can restrain you from falling back into the trap that is distractions.
DESIRE TO SUCCEED
It is important that youâre doing all this for yourself. Not your parent. Not anyone else, but you. If you lack the desire to get good grades and do well, itâll definitely be tough finding the motivation to do anything. You donât have to like studying, but you at least have to want getting good grades. If you desire to have straight As, youâll naturally fell more inclined to do something to help you get it. However, its also important to set realistic goals. Itâs impossible for you to jump from a F9 to A1 in a month. Set practical goals and take baby steps to get there.
 PROCRASTINATION
Well, procrastination can be a bitch. I started my studyblr account during my o level periods because seeing other peopleâs notes made me want to study. You should find a way to help YOU counter your procrastination tendencies.
All in all, studying is something very unique and personalized. What works for me may not work for you, but if you keep working hard. No goal is ever too far. Thank you for reading!
Need to talk?
If anyone needs advice or just needs to talk or vent, just know that Iâm here. Life can be annoying and stressful and it might seem like nothing is good is happening but talking to someone helps (most of the time).
Going to get started on this, dance compositions are actually so hard. I'm trying to find some inspiration. Also I changed my theme, not completely sure if I like it or not though.
reblog if youâre a studyblr!
i keep posting this and get NO response, so iâm going to keep posting it until i generate a fantastic response!
i need more studyblrs to follow. a lot of the ones i follow arenât too active and i want consistent studyspo!
let me check out your blog you work so hard on!!
I'm honestly put so much time into doing this and I know it's not amazing or great like what most people do on their studyblr accounts, but I'm kinda proud of this.
Hey Guys, my name's Abigail and I just started a studyblr. I procrastinate a lot and I'll be posting general study and motivational stuff.
