There are two aspects of this Lost Special conspiracy everyone needs to be aware of.

Claiming “BBC Sherlock is attempting to make television history by recreating Doyle’s social phenomenon that surrounded The Final Problem of 1893 on an international scale” isn’t that wild of a conspiracy theory. The evidence for this is overwhelming. You could have good, logical debates with skeptics over this exact concept. This is where I put most of my effort – I care more about predicting how the episode and marketing spectacle may go than I do anything else.

However.

Claiming “Derren Brown wrote episodes of Sherlock in order to turn viewers gay”, “Apple Tree Yard isn’t a real show”, “Sherlock North is a fake perpetuated by the BBC”, and other bizarre theories we shuffle around on this site are what give people the ammunition they need to call us out as lunatics.

Rumors and misinformation spread like wildfire on this site. Metas I’ve written incorrectly that I believed to be true at the time blow up with thousands of notes but when I write later to correct the flawed logic, those posts get ignored.

People who point out that conspiracy theorists allow incorrect ideas to get out of hand are absolutely right. Everyone is responsible for the content they allow on their blog, and that goes for those who reblog others’ ideas, too.

Offended by people claiming conspiracy bloggers have a mob mentality toward illogical and chaotic ideas? Then stop doing it or own up to it. But to pretend we don’t do this is to turn a blind eye to everything that goes on here in this corner of the Fandom. We absolutely do have a mob mentality.

“Conspiracy” is not a holy word. Any conspiracy, whether true or not, requires that you believe fact is fiction, and therefore fiction is fact. This is true everywhere, for every conspiracy, ever. People who believe in a conspiracy and share their ideas means they attempt to persuade others to question their reality and sanity. This is gaslighting. It is what conspiracy theorists do. It is the nature of the beast. Do i do this? Yes. We all do. To pretend we don’t is, again, to not understand the definition of “conspiracy”.

I’ve been compared to a cult leader many times on this site. And you know what? It’s pretty accurate. That’s why i like to post wake-up calls like this. Educate yourselves. Watch what you reblog. Thick critically when others can’t.

I may be toxic, cruel, and overzealous in the eyes of some people on this site, but I am certainly not delusional.

Look out for the number 702 in TLD/TFP!

I’ve been pondering on this meta for literally years now - but as I don’t want to be the only one screaming in case the number 702 might appear in any form in the next episodes, I’ll try to give you the last minute short version. - Which means, I’ll present you rather the clues and results without a lot of explanation.

So what I noticed is, that Moffat has a pattern of using the number 207/702 to mark the beginning and the end of a certain story arc, often in combination with a refrence to apples (sympol of temptation) . The story arcs are often about coming to terms with needs, desire, sexuality and how to make these work in relationships. 

Jekyll

Moffat first used this pattern in Jekyll.  At the end of the series, when Hyde gets more and more power over Tom, his wife Claire asks him, where they spent their honeymoon to be sure she’s dealing with Tom and not with Hyde. And he gives her the correct answer: They spent their honeymoon in The Appleyard in room 702. (This scene is near the end of the series, but the memory references the beginning of their relationship, so we have the full arc.)

Doctor Who -  The Story of Amy Pond

In The Beast Below (06x03, 2010) we follow Amy Pond and the Doctor travelling through time and space for the first time. This is Amy’s introduction into the Doctor’s world. A girl runs away and Amy asks, “Where’d she go?”, and the Doctor answers: “Deck 207, Apple Sesame block, dwelling 54A”

This episode also features a poem that reflects quite well the process that Moffats frames with the numbers 207/702. People have to enable their deepest desires and impulses to truly experience live/love/passion etc.  

A horse and a man, above, below One has a plan, but both must go. Mile after mile, above, beneath One has a smile, and one has teeth. Though the man above might say hello Expect no love from the beast below. In bed above, we’re deep asleep While greater love lies further deep This dream must end This world must know We all depend on the beast below.

Amy’s story arc ends with the episode The Angels Take Manhatten (07x05, 2012). There’s an (unnecessary) preface to this episode. And we get a specific shot of the room number 702. (It is not Rory’s room though, that’s 802 - but the 702 is explicitely shown to the audience ). The episode ends with Amy and Rory dying after a long, and implied happy and loving, marriage.

Sherlock

And finally, Sholto stays in room 207 in The Sign of Three, the episode where Sherlock deduces himself into love with John Watson. (And we have Appledore in HLV) This is the beginning of Sherlock’s journey of discovering and accepting his own emotions and desires and of learning how to be himself in a relationship (or rather marriage, as the couples in the other stories mentioned were married as well). 

So watch out for the 702!

702 is the signal for the end of this journey. Sherlock will be able to be true to himself and to his partner in a healthy relationship from there on.

My brother is literally the worst

So I was talking to my brother and we got to the topic of Sherlock (he's a super casual watcher and hasn't seen TAB). And he pointed out how awful T6T was and how it was definitely the worst episode of Sherlock he'd ever seen. Now a few days ago I would've agreed wholeheartedly, but after reading all the metas and theories under the sun I realize how fantastic of an episode it is. So immediately after hearing this I needed to defend the show and started saying how the whole episode was MEANT to be that way and how all of it was so deep and wasn't meant to be interpreted at face value. He didn't seem very convinced at that point so I explained how fishy (literally) Mary's death was and how it was just like the Molly quote from HLV, and he just gave me a pitying look. I really needed him to understand so I pulled out the fact that THOUSANDS of people are analyzing and creating meta and theories about the episode and explained the John's Alibi theory in great detail (it's my favorite one). At this point brother mine had a blank stare and I could tell he was trying hard not to explain what "denial" is to me as he had done earlier in the week. As a final resort I just gave him the line from the beginning of the episode when Mycroft pointed out they could doctor any footage to create the story they wanted to be told and talked about the differences between the bus scenes. He. Wasn't. Convinced. My brother gave me the most pitying, sad glance he could muster and had the AUDACITY to say "Yeah, to me that just sounds like a bunch of people who won't accept that episode is crap. I mean, professional critics gave reviews and said it was bad, and some of them worked for really nerdy companies. It just wasn't a good episode, move on and accept your favorite show isn't good." Like????? What????? Are people really like this????? My own brother?????

OK. The entire show from the time Sherlock and John ate dinner at Angelo’s in a Study in Pink has been a dream. Mary drugged their dinner. Also reality isn’t real. We all have been kidnapped and drugged and we are really in Mark’s victorian styled laboratory and he is testing different plots on us via hallucinatory drugs. That’s why some of us are Sherlloly shippers and some are Johnlock. We are getting different plots. It all makes so much sense now.

Three possible reasons we’ve seen AA on Setlock in her TST “death” scene outfit:

1: red herring, the writers didn’t want us thinking that she died in ep 1 so they kept her around here and there while filming to throw us off

2: She will reappear in future episodes as a sort of “ghost” haunting Sherlock, or he’s hallucinating her in a guilt- and drug-induced nightmare or whatnot

3: (my favorite, and my instinct) Mary’s “death” scene will be revisited, but told correctly. What we saw in T6T isn’t real. We’ll see the real version in the future

More on this picture: The game is on/over

- Sherlock is no longer playing the game, it needs to end. He’s not looking at the game, but pushing away the pions, he’s taking them down. 

- Mycroft is focused on the game but has his hands tied, he can’t do anything. He can’t control the players anymore, can’t predict where the game is going, can’t influence it. 

- John is between the two of them. He’s focused on the game too, he has his own part in it, but keeps his hands off the game board. He has his own plan, one that includes both Sherlock and Mycroft. He’s about to get hurt playing, but he doesn’t mind, he’s focused, determined.

Sherlock doesn’t simply quit the game. He addresses us directly. It’s his version of events playing out.

Or, specifically, how he prefers to tell them. Not the version he *thinks* happened but the version he wants to make public. To cover up…John killing Mary, just as MI-6 created an alibi for Sherlock, T6T is Sherlock’s alibi for John.

Listen, TST being Sherlock telling a story to give John an alibi explains the fact that we almost don’t see John throughout the episode, not when things go bad. He arrives at the aquarium after Mary gets killed, he’s not here when it happens.

OH MY GOD. In ASiP Sherlock tells us how he got Angelo off a serious charge by showing that he was committing a smaller crime at the time.

Perhaps we’re supposed to think that John was emotionally distant from Mary, cheating on her – like you say, we hardly see him – because that is the smaller crime?? But that he wouldn’t have been emotionally involved/present enough to murder her. He also wasn’t committed enough to the cheating relationship to allow that to be a reason to ‘get rid of’ his wife

Another point to be made--Lots of folks (including me) have pointed out that when Mary died it was just like the quote from HLV; "It's not like in the movies. There's not a great big spurt of blood and you go flying backwards." Mary's wound did just that to her. But, I interpreted it to mean that Mary was still alive, because she was conscious for much longer than Sherlock was (3 seconds) when he was shot. It's come clear to me now. IT'S ALL PART OF THE RETELLING BY SHERLOCK. He is dramatizing Mary's wound and last moments to steer all the suspicion away from John.

We see the ‘13th’ post-it note on Mycroft’s fridge. Mycroft checks his watch.

Also of interest: “Tick tock” Mycroft tell us in TAB…but is his ‘watch broken?’ Is he not aware of future events?

It’s funny we should be talking about clocks, because last night when I was rewatching I noticed something odd in the sequence where john is interacting with “E.”

Right after she gives him her number, he opens his phone to enter it and sees his lock screen, which of course shows the time:

And the music in the background starts to include a sound like a ticking watch. This music continues throughout. In the next shot when we see John sitting at his table considering “E’s” number and we see him reach for his phone to enter it with a closeup on his watch. We can now hear his watch ticking very clearly in addition to the ticking sound in the score.

In the next scene, when Mary gets up to go quiet Rosie, “E” (or whoever John is texting, if you’re thinking it’s not actually “E” in this scene) opens with:

“It’s been too long.”

When Mary walks back in with Rosie, John puts his phone back on the nightstand, next to his alarm clock. As John takes Rosie and we hear John and Mary trying to quiet her in the background, the shot focuses on John’s phone, sitting between his watch and his alarm clock - John’s “heart” is lit up and sitting between two clocks:

Could also be referring to how convoluted the timeline is. It could be telling to look at the time everything takes place and think about if it really makes sense.

Agree ^^ Even basic things become very confusing when you think too hard. How long was Mary gone when she went on the run? Basic things that I should understand, but somehow don’t. I think the gaps in the timeline (ie the skip to Christmas in HLV) might be called into question.

Mycroft did say at the beginning that they could doctor any footage to create the story they wanted people to see... when they were trying to tell a lie, with only a portion of the truth showing. They were giving us clues from the very beginning of the episode, and we need to be very careful about which parts of it we choose to believe.
