“Um…. It’s about the issue. I spoke to someone from 2024 and they said I was a professor here. Herbology. I am the Herbology professor here.  Does that mean I have to teach the classes? And does it mean I have my own living area now?” Neville asked really confused as to weather he was a student or teacher.

Well, he wasn’t the only student she’d heard had become a professor in the future, and though she didn’t really know him, she knew his last name. A Longbottom becoming a professor didn’t surprise her. Still, for the time being, he was a student once again, as strange as that would be for those who had known his older self. “No,” she shook her head, her answer firm. “Unless you hear otherwise from either Professor Dumbledore or myself, you are to remain as a student, and will continue residing with your peers.”

“I’d normally do my homework. But, it’s more difficult than usual. The 1977 specification and the 2024 specification are very different. I’m sorry that I didn’t do it, I was just too stuck. I’ve got experience of a different type of exams, more simple. As a result the more difficult stuff foxes me.”

Minerva was strict, but she wasn’t unreasonable. Though she expected students to still hand in whatever homework they had been assigned no matter the era, even if it did mean she would be marking three different essays per year group, it was understandable that some people would struggle to find the right information when so much had evidently changed over the years.

“Just do what you can,” she told the girl, offering her a small smile of reassurance. “Perhaps the library may have some older texts that could help you?”

 Ron just looked at the younger looking McGonagall like she had gone mental. “Because I woke up in a different bloody year and the homework I did wasn’t there. I can do the homework but It will be about 28 years late.” Ron said sarcastically. 

Truly, she was fast getting fed up of the attitude some of the students had. It was confusing, of course, and she understood that, but what she didn’t understand was why the felt this gave them the right to be less than well mannered. “Mr Weasley,” she started, keeping her tone level. “While I appreciate what may or may not have happened to your homework, I would remind you that you are still a student, and that House points haven’t ceased to exist in whatever year this is. And neither have detentions.”

“do you need some help around the castle, professor? – it’s awfully boring being trapped here without anything to do and i’ve played enough quidditch for the day.” emma smiled at the woman as she offered her help, thinking of what she would actually be capable of. “maybe sorting some documents out? – teaching some quidditch?”

She considered that for a moment before nodding. “That would actually be very helpful, Miss Vanity, and I’m sure the students would appreciate it.” At least Quidditch seemed to be something they were all familiar with, and would hopefully help to take their minds off of everything else. “And it will give me some time to try and figure out what’s going on.”

“oh, but it is, professor. i’ve graduated years ago.” the blonde smiled at the other, holding the parchment she found earlier in her hand. “you see, it’s not mine. i found it around and it doesn’t have a name on it. so i figured who better to return it to if not you? – i mean, i could do the tasks, but that wouldn’t be fair regarding the young one’s learning.”

“My apologies, Miss Vanity,” Minerva offered a small smile. “It’s been a little difficult to keep track of people given the circumstances.” Half her usual students seemed to be missing, and there were countless others she didn’t recognise wandering around and asking after teachers she didn’t know. “Thank you for picking this up. At the moment I’m not quite sure who it could belong to, but I’m sure someone will come looking for it eventually.” Or, maybe not. It was homework, after all.

Theodore wasn’t particularly keen in actually making a deal out of it - if anything, he was amused that even amidst the worst possible situation the professor remained as rigid as she’d always been. “ Well, probably something to do with the fact that I have no idea what my homework actually was, ” not like he couldn’t get it done in about ten minutes either way, but. “Since other people in my year have different assignments. Professor.”

Her lips pursed slightly at the attitude, and she regarded him coolly. “I am well aware that people have different assignments.” What was to be expected when there appeared to be students from all different eras? “However, the assignment that you have would be the one you received in your last class.” She arched a brow pointedly. “I assume you were paying enough attention to find out?”

Neville looked at the professor in front of him. “I actually was hoping you could help with something non homework related. I have a question and since Dumbledore’s not here I was hoping you could answer it.”

“Oh?” She sat back in her chair, arms resting on the desk. “Well I can certainly try.” As long as she knew the answer and was at liberty to provide a student with that answer, of course. “What was it you wanted to ask?”

hugo’s eyes widened twice their normal size. “i DID do my homework! i always do!” he was in total shock. not only by the fact that his homework had been misplaced, but by the younger image in front of him of the older headmistress he knew. “professor, no offense, but how in the bloody hell do you look like that? just yesterday you were about 50 years older!”

Honestly, she didn’t know whether that was true or not. Instinct told her the boy wasn’t lying, but with little idea who he was aside from his name, she couldn’t be sure. “Perhaps in your time, Mr Weasley,” she nodded stiffly. “But perhaps it has escaped your attention that there’s a lot of things that are different to yesterday.”

“You’re a stone cold bitch, Professor McGonagall, and though I appreciate it and respect it, want to become it, I’m sort of lost right now? I feel like you have more PRESSING concerns to attend to than homework – which, you know I usually do on time – right now. Someone’s saying we’re in the year of 2024, is that true?”

To say she was unimpressed by the outburst would be an understatement. Her lips pursed before narrowing into a thin line as she waited for the girl to finish her tirade. “First of all, Miss McKinnon, whatever is going on around here I would remind you that it would be wise to remember you are still at school. And yes, perhaps I do have more pressing concerns, but that is for me and the other professors to handle. You and your fellow students should do your best to carry on as normal, and that means homework.”

She sighed, setting down her quill. “Yes, classes are still on. I’m not sitting in the classroom for my health, Longbottom. Dorms will remain as they have always been unless there is overcrowding, in which case Professor Dumbledore and I will make alternate arrangements for people.” The Great Hall, perhaps, would work as a temporary sleeping area. She would discuss that with him later. “As for your homework, I know it didn’t because I know you.”

“There must be some mistake, Professor. I know that I turned in my essay. You must have read it– Mirabella Plunkett? The witch who transfigured herself into a fish so that she could love a merman?” Narcissa crossed her arms, upset that Mcgonagall would even suggest that she didn’t do her work. Transfiguration had been her favourite subject since first year, and she worked tirelessly to prove herself in class. There was no reason for her to be doubted. “All I’m saying is that maybe, in the confusion, it got… lost?”

Her expression gave nothing away, but the cogs in her mind were turning, trying to recall the essay in question. She was not a forgetful woman, but recent events had rather taken priority over more minor matters. Of course, she would never tell the students that homework was one of those minor matters. 

Somewhere in her memory, she had a vague recollection of reading an essay on Mirabella Plunkett, though whether that was Narcissa’s or not she couldn’t quite remember. What she did know, however, was that, despite her last name, the girl wasn’t a bad student. Unlike her eldest sister, she was a hard worker and Minerva had never had cause for concern when it came to homework. 

“Perhaps it did,” she started, finally breaking the silence. “There certainly has been a lot going on around here. I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.”

“Yes, I am well aware of the peculiarity that seems to have taken place,” she sighed, frowning as she glanced up from her desk. “What I am not aware of is why you believe this is a valid excuse for not doing your homework.”

I have no self control... and I’m not even sorry!

Half-blood, daughter of muggle minister Robert McGonagall and witch Isobel McGonagall (née Ross).

During her sorting, she proved to be a hatstall with the Sorting Hat taking 5 1/2 minutes to choose between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw.

Straight O student in both OWLs and NEWTs, as well as being a Prefect and later Head Girl. Also became an animagus under the guidance of Albus Dumbledore.

Worked at the Ministry for a time before returning to Hogwarts as a Professor of Transfiguration. Still at Hogwarts now, with the added duties of Head of Gryffindor and Deputy Headmistress.

She cares greatly for the students, especially her Gryffindor ‘cubs’, even if she doesn’t show it.

Strives to always do the right thing, even when it’s not the easiest thing.

When things get tough, she’ll act calm and in control, only letting her facade falter when she’s alone, or amongst a select few.
