@professor-trevelyan
lucien instantly straightens at the professor, and he's glad he hasn't been making a fool of himself by drinking too much. he's always so focused on first impressions. "oh, uh. good evening, professor," lucien all but stutters out, placing his empty cup to the side. "it was just my attempt at small talk," he waves his hand with a nervous laugh. "i'm sure it's something you already know, and i could even be wrong!" lucien stops before he could continue rambling. "what is that you teach?"
The professor's lips curl into a slight smile as he observes the cadet's sudden alertness. It is evident that he values making a good impression, a quality that the professor appreciates—though one that won't get someone far in this world, practically having to become a colder part of yourself. "Luckily for you, I happen to take pleasure in hearing what my students have to say, so again; finish that statement, Cadet." He concludes with a warm smile, eyes crinkling at the corners. A play off at the thought he might not see this face come tomorrow. "Dragonkind.—So take heed in my class, it's crucial in you surviving Presentation Day and gods willing, Threshing." Or rather, dragons willing.

Who: Open to all Where: Courtyard
Kyler stood in the midst of the party, surrounded by the jubilant atmosphere of students and fellow professors. Yet, his gaze was fixed upon the fountain in the courtyard, lost in his thoughts. This was the easy part, he thought. As the water cascaded down the ornate sculpture, Kyler found himself reflecting on the countless students who had embarked on the perilous journey leading up to Presentation Day, only to (sometimes literally), fall short and never make it to graduation.
He could only do so much to prepare them in the ways of Dragonkind. He had witnessed the potential within each student. However, the path to mastering the secrets of the dragons was fraught with danger and uncertainty. As he stared into the crystal clear waters of the fountain, Kyler couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. The reflections in the water seemed to mirror his own concerns. Two hundred and eighty-six managed to cross the parapet, a record number at that. How many this time will be swallowed by the relentless challenges they would face? The weight of this responsibility weighed heavily upon him, Kyler had seen the hope drain from the eyes of talented individuals who had once possessed boundless potential.
With classes starting tomorrow, the uncertainty gnawed at him, challenging his own belief in the capabilities of his students. He couldn't help but wonder if this year would bring a different outcome—a year of remarkable success or unimaginable loss.
OPEN STARTER
"well, yeah. but if you read all the ancient texts, the founders actually used the help of the scribes to⎯⎯" lucien's cut off when the person he was talking to walks off. his shoulders slumped a little, he moves to take a sip of his first ( and only ) drink he's ever had. "tough crowd, i guess."
Kyler watched on as the cadet's words lingered in the air, left incomplete as his conversation partner abruptly walked off. Being of academics, it was disheartening to see someone's enthusiasm for a subject met with disinterest or interruption; knowledge is key and it's what keeps most of the students alive, especially first years. With a mix of curiosity and concern, Kyler approached, hands tucked behind his back, "Finish that statement, Cadet." Voice firm but lacking authority. "I'm curious."

he's mostly avoided alcohol consumption for the larger part of the night, only taking one or two sips here and there when in the company of others. certainly there's no joy to be had in getting drunk alone. but it's discourteous to approach a professor—a respectable man, really—at a celebration and offer nothing, so nadir comes prepared when he approaches his favorite professor from first year. there are two drinks in his hands, one arm stretched to offer a glass to kyler. he smiles. "would it be impolite if i ask you a favor about a classroom matter in exchange for the drink?"
Kyler stood at the fountain completely focused on the water, pointer finger circling in the air just at his waist. In the fountain, a small whirlpool formed in the still water, where the professor watched a leaf get helplessly pulled under. Out the corner of his eyes, he looked to the figure the familiar voice came from. "Not at all." He returns the smile with a wide one of his own, happily taking the offer in hand and tipping the liquid into his mouth. His interaction with Hazen earlier loosened him up, now more eager to partake in the party less as a professor and more of an individual. Though right now, his attention were focused on the other; the whirlpool returning to stillness. "What can I help you with, Nadir?"
❛ think with my big head and my other big head, right, got it, professor, ❜ he gave a faux salute at the wise words kyler gave him, his dimples only growing deeper with the wider his smile became. he gave such a laugh that resembled that much of a cackle, head thrown back as the hair swept over his eyes. oh, how the professor misinterpreted his questioning. he gives a nod to the other riders who fell into his wing as they passed by before directing his gaze once again on kyler, ignorant to the way they shone under his gaze. ❛ all the more reason to drink yourself into a stupor ! ❜ he shoves the concoction of a drink into the other's hands, with a reassuring nod. ❛ you said you're an acquaintance this evening, go on. have a sip. or chug. whatever you need to get death off your mind. ❜
A chuckle escaped him, slightly caught off guard but did guess he set himself up for that one. Mimicking the other's gesture to the passing riders, eyes narrowed as he took in Hazen in his entirety. One of the more obnoxious riders with a good head on his shoulders, nonetheless. What Kyler wouldn't give to be young again...minus the death and despair. The drink shoved his way caught him off guard yet again, a smile soon following as he took the drink. He did say that, didn't he? "You know," He spoke into the glass as he tipped it back, eyes peering at the young rider over the top. "If I haven't told you before; you'll great things for Navarre once you graduate, Hazen." The words, despite having knowledge of the rider's reputation, were the most honest Kyler has spoken thus far today. He just hoped to see him make it to graduation, having grown tired watching his students not make it to the end. That is why he does whatever you need to to get death of his mind; it's been around the professor the last twelve years."—And as wingleader, please watch out for your cadets."

if taner needed any other reason to be less of a fan of gatherings like these, he's pretty sure a cadet has just given him a good one. he might not have said it but the way his eyes met the other's told them that they needed to get gone. taner is too tired for this kind of thing and he finds himself thinking he should have just gone to azrien and stayed with him in whatever corner he's located himself at. mumbling, taner now stands near the fountain, trying to get... whatever the cadet was drinking before it spilt all over him. "it's not as funny as it looks." words that he speaks so casually when he hears footsteps near him. after a few more scrubs, stretching out his shirt, he looks over at the person that's come close enough to perhaps regret their decision. "you don't happen to have something i can use to... pat this dry, do you?"
The scene had happened all so fast there hadn't been time to process what'd occurred, prompting his curiosity to get the better of him. "I assure you, rider, I'm only laughing on the inside." Speaking up upon getting closer to the fountain, the tone behind the younger male's words thick enough to cause a bit of regret were the professor a cadet this day. "Here," Produced from the pocket of his vest, Kyler fluffed out the handkerchief with a quick flick, holding it out toward the rider. "The best I have at the moment; it should suffice."

Theon sighed. He really wished he wasn't about to do this. His siblings would kill him if they found out he was checking on them via one of their teachers. He rolled his eyes at the thought.
"Hey, professor!" Theon called out, waving one of them down. "Shit." He muttered.
"I don't mean to bother you, I know there's a lot going on right now. I'm Theon Henshaw. Captain of the Southern Wing." He told him proudly. "I'm sure you uh, know the younger Henshaws... I was wondering. Do you uh, know how they're doing?" He asked, running his hands through his hair.
"I don't really hear from them much and I was curious to see how they were adjusting." He admitted with a shrug. Normally, he wouldn't allow anyone to know his inner thoughts but there wasn't anyone else around and once he had his answers, he could go back to the southern wing knowing they were still alive and well.
You don't have to look out for me, I'm not him.
His brother's words stung, jaw clenching as the venom sunk in. True, he was not their deceased brother, and he'd like to keep it that way; whatever and however he had to. Kyler were about to protest against an already lost battle when a voice had been directed toward him. He waved a hand at the man, turned around to dismiss his little brother before making way down the hall.
"Captain." One arm behind his back and the other crossing his waist, Kyler bowed his head in the presence of a superior. After a brief moment of silence, the professor righted himself, arms finding themselves behind his back in a familiar stance. "They seem to be handling their studies well. I can tell you from my point of view, they're doing quite well. A rider of your status as their older brother, I believe they're pushing themselves to be even better." Theon appeared to be a caring, loving brother much like how Kyler hoped to be perceived by others. Lips parted as words began to form as Rygor chimed in in the back of his mind, pausing and ultimately halting the words. His losses weren't for others to bare and Kyler thought it'd be ill of him to put such thoughts into the captain's head. "You should be proud of them."
"please," the rider exhales along with a small scoff ⸻ it's easy to forget her place when she's surrounded by a night that doesn't really scream basgiath war college ⸻ before she looks up and silently reminds herself it's not just other years and cadets around, "the only thing of worth that i've got are daggers, professor." and her dragon, who she adds before he decides to growl inside of her mind as if she's even capable of forgetting about him. she's pretty sure if she didn't bond when she did and to the dragon that brynne is, her father would have removed her from the beddor family tree and she's pretty sure no one would miss her all that much. "sometimes, cadets survive the parapet just to give the rest of us something interesting to watch on the upcoming days. have you seen any promising ones? i heard one of them kicked at least two off the parapet. don't know how true it is, though."
"Call me crazy, but I do not like to use the parapet to gage who I consider promising. You know what they say: a dragon without its rider is a tragedy; a rider without their dragon is dead. You can learn a lot about a person with how they take to Dragonkind." There isn't anything promising about a rider should they not even care to learn more about dragons than how to ride them. In most cases, they don't even make it to flight class. An eyebrow cocked curiously at her last words. "Oh my. Well...as unruly as it is, I am inclined to believe it. On my Conscription Day, the end of the parapet had to of been twenty or so feet away from me, so you can imagine how close the end was for those in front of me. Here comes who we all considered the runt of the class and he gave a boy a shove with just enough force to throw off their balance. Right over the edge he went while taking the one who did the shoving with him." Kyler cleared his throat, secretly stifling the chuckle threatening to escape at his recollection. The memory was not funny when happening and it certainly should not be now, but ask anyone; they got what they deserved.
I miss being happy.

------ courtyard , open to anyone .
all she knows is that everything hurts ------ a feeling so familiar it's almost comforting , like the shivers that shake her when she dreams of home . feels like a child , out of place among festivities she has so little understanding for , sits on a blanket with her knees pressed close to her chest , fingers curled around a wine bottle ; the alcohol stings in her throat just like the crimson of her knuckles does . solace interrupted by unwelcome footsteps , muscles tense & jaw clenched when eyes rest upon the intruder's features . she would've smiled at them once , offered a sip of the sickly bitter drink in her grasp ... all she can give is wide eyes now , a soft sigh moving past chapped lips before words can follow . ❛ you're blocking my view of the circus . ❜
Finding himself stepping away, soon enough the celebration turned to a frantic search for his brother for it'd be one drink too many since catching the younger Trevelyan's features in the crowd of many shortly after he'd successfully crossed the parapet. If anything, Kyler's being his annoyingly overbearing self and his brother is off having a little fun with whomever. Thankfully his eyes caught sight of someone resting upon a blanket freeing him from such images. He was quick to catch a glimpse of the wine bottle as he approached with a few more steps, eyes then falling to the sole four-pointed star adorning her riders black. "Is everything alright, cadet?" Tone nothing more than sincere, if anything to show he understands without words having to be spoken. The parapet was the first hurdle to overcome in this forthcoming journey; one Kyler knows all too well.
hazen finds himself straightening at the sound of professor trevelyan, clearing his throat as if it would somehow whisk the alcohol out of his system. but his words only cause him to stifle a laugh, one that nearly has ale leak from his mouth. ❛ isn't it more welcoming to offer all my extremities, professor ? i'm simply utilizing all of my resources. ❜ he knows it sounds dumb, even in his drunken haze. he sighs, longingly, surveying the entirety of professor trevelyan without any bit of shame. before the professor can depart, he finds himself calling out. ❛ was it always like this, professor ? all celebrations and ignorant towards the impending death ? ❜
"At ease, rider. I am but an acquaintance this evening, save the formalities for classes." Situated now amongst Hazen and those who gathered close to him, Kyler lets his body relax if his words needed any sort of backing. He found his weight had shifted to one hip standing there, a light life falling from parted lips following the wingleader's words until his brown hues caught the not so subtlety of Hazen gazing upon him. "All I am saying in the matter is to make sure you introduce yourself with the proper head first. Show them you can be prim before viewing them beneath you."
"That, young rider, depends on who you ask." And since it were he the question was directed to, he wishes he could say celebrations were the only to look forward to. That's just not how this world works, a sad reality when you truly ponder on it. Kyler had accepted his fate in all this sometime when he was around the age Hazen is now. Survival is not guaranteed and for the professor, it's a matter of when now. The thoughts brought forth a moment of hesitation before he continued speaking, haphazardly mimicking the look he received prior, but rather entirely more instigating on his part, "Myself...I've accepted my death, your death...everyone's death. There is no point in drowning yourself in the inevitable, we as riders have a duty and if your mind is focused on the approaching death; you might as well be dead already. Ignorance is bliss as they say."
