MUGGLE STUDIES AT HOGWARTS

"You went to muggle university?" She’d heard tales of muggle university through various muggle magazines and movies she had seen over the years. Although she was a pure blood, her parents had always been quite progressive in their few of the magical vs. muggle world and even had a muggle television in their home. Granted they didn’t quite know how to use it, it didn’t stop Marlene from growing a healthy curiosity for all things muggle… especially parties. "What was that like?" Marlene had noticed his change in position but thought nothing of it.

"Yes, I did. Studied History. Quite the experience, really..." He said with a nonchalant smile. It wasn't often that he was able to reminisce over his time at University. It was a shame that there weren't similar institutions in the Wizarding world, really. "It was brilliant. Everyone was so friendly and we had a lot of fun and we learned so much. I even had my first girlfriend - but thats a different story."

She smiled, actually interested in the subject for once, not like most of her actual courses. ”That’s amazing, really. I don’t know how anyone would think of such a thing.” Winter bit her lip when he looked at her like her question was stupid. She quickly looked at her hands, resisting the urge to wring them together. She felt embarrassed at asking such an apparently dumb question and felt her heart sink slightly. Winnie wasn’t used to her teachers looking at her like that, and honestly, she knew very little about muggles, which was why she had asked him to teach her in the first place. “Of course,” She said softly, tossing her hair and forcing a lighthearted laugh.

"Well, wizards don't have as much motivation to invent things since we have magic to solve our problems..." He shrugged. Even the poorest of magical families got by thanks to their magic.

As a teacher, he'd learned to read his students and it was clear that he'd embarrassed her. It was easy to forget that wizards and witches really didn't know much about muggles at all - that was why he'd become a muggle studies teacher, for goodness' sake. "Sorry, Winter. I didn't mean it in that way. I was being arrogant because all of my friends know how to drive. You weren't to know."

"It’s your birthday? Happy Birthday!" Mary beamed, pushing her hair back out of her face. Chuckling at his admission, the brunette nodded her head in reply to his question, opening up her bag as she replied. "Yes! I’ve got it here, actually, if you want it back. I really enjoyed it." Mary pulled it out of her bag, handing it to him with a smile.

"It was. On 1st April. I completely forgot about it. I didn't think I'd start forgetting things already..." He was truly exasperated with himself but tried not to let it show. He rested his cheek on his knee and looked up at her as she handed him back his book. Oh, the satisfaction that was brought when he'd made a student smiled was perhaps the most wonderful sensation he'd ever experience. It was why he was so passionate about teaching. "What did you enjoy about it, then?"

Mary had been wandering around aimlessly for awhile now, in the hope of clearing her head from the guilt of what had happened with Lily, and the grief that always began to consume her around this time of year. The deep voice of an elder male made Mary turn on the spot, frown etched on her face until she realised her Muggle Studies professor was there. Having only heard the voice, as opposed to the wordsmith were spoken, Mary didn’t know whether or not her professor had been talking directly to her, but knew full well that she couldn’t just walk away in case he had been. “Sorry, sir?” Mary’s voice was soft, expression politely inquisitive as she took a small step closer.

He glanced up to see his student peering at him with a look of bewilderment. "I- It's nothin'. I just forgot about my birthday, s'all." He chuckled, trying to cover up his embarrassment. "Didn't mean for you to hear me." He sat up and hug his legs, smiling at her. "Any luck with that book I loaned yeh?"

"Thank you, Sir." She beamed, pushing her hair back out of her face. "I shall be sure to give you my opinions." She smiled, before her eyes flickered to the clock. "Oh, fuc- I mean, urh, Merlin.." She blushed. "I’m now ten minutes late to Charms, sorry professor!" With this she was out of the door, mentally cursing herself for being late.

"Nice save. See you soon!" he called after her, waving. When she was gone and the door has closed behind her he propped his feet up on the desk, wondering if it was appropriate to smoke a quick cigarette before his next class appeared.

Domhnall hadn't bothered looking at his post until this morning. He was sat on a mound of grass on the field outside during a free period, rifling through the various letters. "Christ!" he exclaimed, reading through the cards. "My birthday! How did I forget?" He lay back, chuckling to himself. He was an April Fool's child, yet here was sat, three days later. He'd been so busy arranging his club and getting caught up in his work that his birthday had completely slipped his mind. His cards were very lovely. He received them from his family members, and the cards from his muggle friends had been forwarded to him by his mother. Obviously they weren't allowed to know where he worked. A pang of nostalgia hit him as memories were shared, remembering past birthdays. To think, his first birthday at Hogwarts had been forgotten! What a mad time, indeed.

Winter watched as the images flashed on the wall in front of her in awe. Listening to her teacher, she nodded. “That’s genius! I mean, really. And they don’t have the developing solution like us, so how do they take so many pictures?” Winnie was completely blown away by how muggles did all that they did. “I think they’re amazing, Muggles. Especially with their automobiles, have you ever ridden in one?”

"I think the machine captures several pictures a second, so if you put them into the projector the reel turns and shows the frames straight after one another which creates the moving picture. I don't really know. It seems simple, but who'd have thought to do it, eh?" He chuckled at how astonished she appeared to be. "They are pretty amazing, but I'm biased, so... Of course. I can drive one, Winter." He looked at her as if her question was stupid. It wasn't, of course, but he'd gotten used to everyone he knew being able to drive, which incidentally is why he decided to learn how to drive himself.

"Something tells me I would’ve liked the raves." She leaned in closer, eager to know more. "So what were they like? I’m assuming you’ve spent a rather large amount of time in the muggle world."

"They're loud. Strangely enjoyable, even though it' claustrophobic. Music's good..." he said, vaguely trying to keep the conversation professionally, unconsciously leaning back a bit, feeling uncomfortable that she'd leaned in. A teacher couldn't be seen in such close proximity to one of his students. "I used to live in a house with muggles when I studied at a muggle university, actually."

"Oh, that would be really good - as long as you don’t mind, of course!" She smiled warmly at her teacher, smile growing when he pulled out the book. "Thank you, Professor! I promise to have it back by the end of the week." Beaming at him, she placed the book in her bag.

"It's no problem at all. Take your time with it. I'm just glad that someone will give that play the attention it deserves." He sighed contently, leaning back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head. "You can tell me if it's worth showing to the others."

"I heard they dress up like witches, albeit the ugly kind." She grimaced before laughing it off. "If only they knew most witches were attractive." She beamed. "I bet a muggle halloween is fantastic."

"I find it endearing, really. All of the wizards look like Dumbledore, and the witches are way off. Green and warty. It's what people told them, so they believed it." He shrugged. "They're okay. It's not as important in the muggle world - it's just a bunch of kids dressing up in scary costumes and knocking on people's doors asking for sweeties. And the adults go out to Halloween themed parties. The raves are the best." He rambled on a bit, reminiscing as he spoke. He honestly missed being a muggle university student. It felt like time was paused while he enjoyed himself, and as soon as he came home the world would start spinning around again.
