Course Intervention via Sterling Toles
“One of my first experiences with feeling euphoria through sound was hearing Knee Deep by Funkadelic in front of an apartment building in Southwest Detroit. This was in the early 80's, during the time where a local DJ named The Electrifying Mojo would play this song, as well as Kraftwerk. These two groups would be primary to sounds that would eventually emerge from this place. In a city filled with factory workers whose lives were steeped in precision, repetition, and technology, days were often spent creating vehicles for transportation and nights spent seeking vehicles to transcend. Sound has always been primary to achieving this transcendence in Detroit. I think back to the album art of the Parliament Funkadelic records, which was Afro-Futurism before there was a term for it. They were taking the roots of our experience, that was previously embodied in Rhythm and Blues, and begin infusing technology to sculpt our past into new possibilities. So when Mojo began playing Kraftwerk, a german electronic band, Detroiters immediately saw the sound as vehicle designed for the destination we were already en route to. With Mojo providing the electricity for the gears of our inspiration, young people began using technology to create vehicles of their own.” 1. Intro
In preparation for a fluid and evolving contemporary design practice, ARC311 introduces physical prototyping and related computational strategies. Across platforms and instruments, exercises and readings emphasize process development as a core competency in architecture. A lecture component provides a technological overview, situated in a long-term cultural perspective and a theoretical framework. Focused lab modules provides exposure to a range of prototyping and fabrication resources at Princeton SOA.
