Trump said there "is tremendous discord" among Iran's leaders, which has complicated efforts to end the war that the United States began in
CNBC:
President Donald Trump told Congress on Friday that hostilities in Iran “have terminated” since he imposed a two-week ceasefire on April 7 that has been extended. Trump’s claim came on what would have been a deadline under the War Powers Resolution of 1973 for him to ask Congress to officially declare war against Iran or authorize the use of military force against that country. Friday marks 60 days since the war began, in late February. Under the War Powers Resolution, a president must seek authorization from Congress for military force within 60 days of the start of hostilities. Congress has not authorized U.S. military action against Iran. Trump’s letters to congressional leaders Friday are a volley aimed at discouraging lawmakers in Congress from restricting military action against Iran.
The formal notification to Congress does not preclude Trump from taking additional action against Iran.

CNN:
President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off the stage by Secret Service after possible shots were fired at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday. Vice President JD Vance and several members of Trump’s Cabinet who were also in attendance were also rushed out. A source told CNN that Trump is safe, while two sources said Vance is safely out of the dinner. According to an administration official, Cabinet members are OK as well. Several US Secret Service agents yelled, “shots fired” during the event, which is being held at the Washington Hilton, according to pool reports. Secret Service later said in a post on X that one person is in custody.
The war in Iran enters its 6th week as the search continues for the missing U.S. service member who bailed out of a fighter jet shot down ov
NPR:
As the 5th week of fighting in Iran came to an end, 365 U.S. service members have been wounded, according to Pentagon data. The death toll remains at 13 service members killed in combat. In Iran, at least 2,076 people have been killed by US-Israeli attacks since Feb. 28, according to the country's Health Ministry.
An Iran war that was already proving quite unpopular with the American people has entered a new, more problematic phase for President Donald
CNN:
The political problem with all of this is that the US military success is supposed to be the main thing that the administration has going for it. Americans have little faith in the mission. They don’t think it’s been explained. The list of four objectives has constantly shifted. And perhaps the biggest problem is economic pessimism resulting from the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent rising gas prices. Americans just don’t think the war is worth the costs.
What was once revealed solely by whistleblowers, investigative journalists, activists and dissident media is now being shown by the empire i
Caitlin Johnstone:
It took a lot of work to help the average Westerner understand that NATO aggressions actively provoked the war in Ukraine, or that Western interventionism played a major role in the violence and chaos in Syria, or that U.S. economic warfare was largely responsible for the suffering of Cubans and Venezuelans. The murderous savagery of the empire was hidden behind layers of obfuscation, allowing the propagandists to frame the Western power structure as a passive witness to the abuses of foreign regimes. Now the propagandists have very little to work with, so those obfuscations can no longer take place. There’s no way you can spin a school full of children blown up by an American double-tap airstrike as anything other than what it is. There’s only so much narrative manipulation you can exert on raw video footage of a Western-backed genocide playing out in full view of the entire world day after day for years.
We reject war. But for wars to end, journalists must work without fear or intimidation, and media ownership can't become a means of control,
Consortium News:
Governments across the Arab and Muslim world warned against the military adventurism now engulfing the Middle East long before the current escalation. Their warnings went largely unheeded, and the consequences are now unfolding. At this moment, journalists, intellectuals, and people of conscience must speak the truth in all its manifestations, using every available platform and opportunity. For wars to end, truth must be spoken openly and without hesitation. Journalists must be allowed to work without fear or intimidation. Media ownership must not become a mechanism of control and censorship.

Across the West, corporate media have employed the same tactics of using the passive voice and not naming the perpetrator when describing U.
MintPress News:
American newsrooms are also filled with former Israel lobbyists. A MintPress News investigation found hundreds of former employees of Israel lobbying groups such as AIPAC, StandWithUs and CAMERA working in top newsrooms across the country, writing and producing America’s news – including on Israel-Palestine. These outlets include MSNBC, The New York Times, CNN, and Fox News. There are even ex-Israeli spies writing our news. Another MintPress report revealed a network of former agents of IDF intelligence outfit, Unit 8200, working in America’s newsrooms, including at CNN and Axios. Therefore, with American newsrooms presided over and staffed in no small part by pro-Israel zealots, it is far from a surprise that their coverage closely mirrors the outlook and biases of Washington and Tel Aviv. And now, with CNN, CBS News, and TikTok owned by CIA asset Larry Ellison, the IDF’s largest private funder and a close personal friend of Benjamin Netanyahu, we should only expect the propaganda to be dialed up to eleven.
We know that this is not about Iran’s people, it’s about Iran’s oil and wealth.
In These Times:
We know that the U.S. government is once again lying to us — the U.S. public. Iran poses no threat to the American people. We know that Israel and the United States started this war, that they have once again broken international law to violate yet another nation’s sovereignty. We know that states have a right to defend themselves, and that includes Iran. We know that this war is illegal according to U.S. law. It was neither approved by the U.S. congress nor the American people. This war has no mandate.
American political leaders are openly stating that the United States is fighting Iran for Israel.
Constraining a president’s ability to launch needless, open-ended war is one of Congress’ most important constitutional responsibilities. C
Common Dreams:
Today, the stakes are higher than they were in 2002. The international diplomatic infrastructure that once constrained conflict has been eroded by the Trump administration. We no longer have the nuclear arms agreements we did a decade, or even a month, ago. And our military is integrating and using artificial intelligence for military operations faster than our lawmakers’ ability to make laws and provide oversight. We are entering a period where the speed of decision-making is accelerating, while the guardrails that prevent catastrophic miscalculation are weakening. This combination should terrify every American.
