*slides in here* Welp it’s been months! Lookin like that little pause I intended to take wound up being longer than I wanted it to be lol
Slowly getting back into wanting to write again, curtesy of some very patient friends. So i’m gonna try and get back into the swing of things on my blogs, however slow it may be. My next semester is coming up so with what’s looking like less time to draw, maybe I’ll have more motivation to write.
ooc
Hey so im sure most people following here have noticed my activity has gone from low to practically non-existent. Sorry about that! Im pretty sure im currently burnt out with writing, so I’ve been mostly over on my art blog cranking out art instead. Safe to say I should put the rp blogs on a bit of a hiatus until I can write again.
This’ll get reblogged to my other rp blogs too, so it’s not just Bites.
project-black-seraph:
The explanation was brief, but to the point. The dna of the black arms was…not be a bad thing……it confused the hybrid. The sudden fold of his ears giving away that feeling. “But…the researchers. They were terrified of me. Any words I caught from them….they acted like the black arms were….something to hate.” Slowly, he sat himself up, curling his tail around his form and letting his wings relax at his back. That sentiment, of course, then included the hybrid. He was something they hated, something they contained and scorned even though they created him.
“I was meant to guard something. They made me to be…..to guard something. I dont know what. If they didn’t want aggression….why provoke me?” His voice cracked some, ages of disuse making his throat dry at the expense of verbal communication. His speech was slow as he gathered his thoughts properly, his mind searching for words he didn’t know to describe the experience, to ask why.
But he didn’t know all the words he needed, so he spoke nothing else. He simply gazed back at Volt as if he expected the other hybrid to have all the answers, to know why the researchers had such double standards. They were both experiments–the little one too. It made the experiments mind linger on what he went through in containment; windowless, doorless walls in a cell meant to harbor a feral creature. Scheduled feeding that almost always resulted in the hybrid getting sedated to ensure his feeders’ safety. Never once letting his mind linger too long on the experimentation or the studies The always assumed he would be the first to strike, and he nearly constantly was, but they were also the provocateurs. They poked, they prodded, and they studied how long it took him to get frustrated and bite.
Volt wasn’t really surprised to find out that the scientists that created the other were terrified of him. The same could have been said for some of the ones who had seen what the older hybrid himself could do when under enough distress to defend himself. Or when it came to trying to protect his fellow experiments. While he wished he did have more answers, there was only so much he could answer in regards to his and his daughter’s home zone.
“It’s what scientists do. They poke and prod and do anything they can to tell the limits of those they create. To make sure things are perfect. No flaws. Black Arms in full blooded status were aggressive and volatile.” A pause to let some of that sink in before he felt he could continue. “If I had to guess, the reason they provoked you was likely to see just how much it took to warrant an attack to see if you would be the best candidate for whatever it was they were planning to make you guard.”
Since Volt had been originally intended to be a weapon and soldier, he didn’t have too much of an idea on what they would create someone like Seraph to guard. Unless it was a high ranking official and also as a show of power for other nations, but that could have very well been a stretch.
Upon hearing the voice crack, Volt reached over to grab his water skin that was nearby and held it out with a smile. “Here. It’s just water, but it might help the dryness and you don’t have to worry about any illnesses. I’m immune to just about everything under the sun from what I can tell.”
It was only a short time after that Harmony came back with a sizable fish flailing in her mouth. When she had promised to get another fish for their guest to eat, she had meant it and set it down on the ground to bounce on the spine to get it to stop moving. Her bright smile was given to the other with a wag of her tail. “Do ya wanna cook it or eat it raw?”
Seraph simply sat and let the rest of Volt’s explanation sink in, hoping that the longer he stewed on it, the more it would make everything else fit and make sense. But no such luck. Volt provided a logical, potential ‘why’ but it was only hypothetical. The other hybrid hadn’t been there to see what happened, or to know the scientists involved. It was an educated guess, but given his experiences it was the most educated one, as far as Seraph was concerned.
He eyed the waterskin Volt held out warily, not quite sure what it was or what it held, until the other hybrid explained it. Even still, smart as the creature was Seraph didn’t understand how it seemed capable of holding water, much less how to get the water out. A head tilt and no forward motion were all Volt received to show his confusion at the object.
Amidst their conversation, Seraph had nearly forgotten that Harmony had left. His ears perked as she presented the newly caught fish to him overruling the opportunity for water, his long ears twitching as she broke its spine. All four eyes squinted in appreciation at the meal, wings shifting as he pushed himself up to sniff at the fish. He was perfectly fine with eating it raw, he got his fill regardless of whether the meat was fresh and bloody or cooked well.
Seraphs own tail wiggled a small bit, mirroring the smaller hybrids enthusiasm. So far the kindness the two were displaying was...new to the hybrid. It was nice. And to finally have some answers, it put a dark part of the hybrid to rest to know he wasn’t inherently something to fear.
“Why do you cook them? Do you not get the same nutrients either way?” He paused in sniffing the meal to raise an innocent question, one he found worth asking in order to sate his own curiosity.
project-black-seraph:
It was interesting, to watch Chars process. He used a knife rather than his claws, could only eat the meat if it were cooked. Seraph tipped his head. He found it strange. How had Char managed so long if he could eat the meat raw on a moments notice? Watching as the hedgehog offered the small chunk of meat, the hybrid sniffed and quickly snatched it up in his teeth. And even then, it was devoured even quicker before the experiment was looking back up at Char.
Another sniff and his eyes were directed to the sizzle of the meat–not quite done, but getting there. Back to the remains of their meal, and Seraph began digging through it, looking for loose bones that otherwise would have gotten in the way of cooking the meat. Seraph could take them back to his cave, store them for later.
Perhaps the hedgehog would also like some bones with his meal? He’d have to remember to offer some when they were done eating. They’ve proved to be a decent snack to the hybrid, and a decent enough deterrent for anyone getting close to his den. He’d built up quite the pile by the time he remember the meat. Seraphs head jerked up and towards the cabobs, leaving him to abandon his hunt for bones and approach Char. He was still rather unsure about speaking around the other, but the hedgehog didn’t seem to mind. So instead, he lightly, and almost hesitantly at first, headbutted his elbow towards the fire. The experiment eyed the meats expectantly, glancing back up at Char before returning his gaze to the fire and making a soft huffing noise. It smelled done to the hybrid, so he assumed it must be done and therefore needed to be flipped.
When the food was taken from his fingers, Char had to reign in the very real fear that he might get bitten here, his adrenaline kicking it up a notch when those sharpened teeth neared his fingers. But the food was taken, and no harm had come his way, so his tense shoulders relaxed not a moment after, his smile widening, but his fangs still shielded behind his lips. The last thing he needed was to have the creature feel territorial because he smiled in a Mobian-like friendly gesture. Some wild animals would attack if fangs were shown their way, no matter how kind the intentions.
When Seraph began to paw and claw through the remaining thick of their meal, Char turned his attention to the fire, easily becoming lost in thought, and in the flicker of the flames. In his mind, the creature was honestly helping him in prying meat from bone, and Char wasn’t keen on wasting food, so he shot the creature a distracted, “Help yerself ta as much of that as ya want. I’ll barely be able ta finish two kabobs.” before focusing once again on the warm flames and rubbing his hands together before it.
It wasn’t until Seraph had nudged him that he bristled the barest of a fraction, confused hues coming to rest on the male beside him, watching him curiously. The very intelligent gesture toward the fire, followed by a soft huff drew a smile from Char once again, the hedgehog physically struggling not to full on grin. “Yer pretty damned expressive, uh…huh? I dunno what ta call ya… But I should call ya somethin’ while we’re hangin’ around one another, shouldn’t I?” While he returned his attention to their meal, he flipped them, then placed them back between the debris facing the flames at the new angle so that they would cook evenly. A soft hum rose from his throat in thoughtful reflection. After flipping the skewers, he turned a scrutinizing gaze to his companion and exhaled gently from his nose. His gaze raked over the creatures form, his size intimidating, but considering he had the temperament of a stray kitten, Char was hardly phased…yet. Upon noticing the sprinkle of scales, his fangs, the one odd little area on the creatures chest covered in an invitingly soft section of fluffy fur, and finally, the sharpened edges of his feather-shaped scales along his tail, he had come to his conclusion on the temporary nickname for his new friend. Now to see if his said friend would accept the nickname.
“Whaddya think about ‘Blade‘? Cause yer tough as nails, especially bringin’ down a prey of this caliber. An’ last night, I got a pretty good look at those ‘feathers’ when they were hangin’ over that rail on the balcony. They ain’t soft in the slightest, at least not from glancin’ at em up close.” And then, after a moments pause, he tilted his head to one side thoughtfully and relaxed his posture further. Leaning back, he placed his hands behind himself on the somewhat cleared concrete floor, then slouched in a casual manner, resting his cheek on his own shoulder. “My name’s Char, by the way. Ya seem smart as hell fer just some wild creature. Figure it can’t hurt ta give ya my name, even if ya don’t fully grasp it.” It was more so for the one sided conversation itself that he had been carrying on all this time, than the actually need to introduce himself.
He had no idea just how intelligent this creature was though. That he could understand his every word and file it away.
But he was feeling far more at ease with Seraph now, confident that the larger male wouldn’t attack him unprovoked. And dare he say, he was coming to enjoy his company, immensely. It was so much better to be out here with someone else, as opposed to alone with his thoughts, fears, and anxieties.
A chill blew in from the open door, the flames flickering to and fro for a few moments. Char grimaced and was quick to right himself again, shuffling himself closer to the flames and pulling his flimsy jacket tighter about himself. “Chaos, I hate the cold. What I wouldn’t give fer a nice bed an’ heated room again…” A few more moments of the sizzling meat, and then Char himself deemed them done, both sides holding a healthy amount of seared flesh to them as he removed them from the flames. He divvied up the skewers between them, four for the larger male, and two for himself. Seraph looked as though he could eat far more than Char himself.
“Dig in, big guy. An’ feel free to tear inta more of that too.” A gesture to the remaining carcass. “If you want more cooked, I can try ta pull it off again.” He held his own skewers gingerly between his chilled fingers, giving the meat a moment to cool, then started in on it. Due to his only company being the sentient being beside him, Char wasn’t the most dignified of eaters. Much like his time in prison, he fell to old habits, eating fast while struggling to savor the meal, but at the same time save each precious second of time that he had to himself while not being on the constant run. He chewed politely, but held no reservations about devouring his own meal like a ravenous man. Only once he had neared the last few bites of his last skewer did he slow down and release a long breath.
He was nearing his limit on the amount of food he could eat in one sitting. Pushing it even. If he ate any more than the amount he already had, he would risk falling ill. So the last few bits were plucked free from the stick and offered out much like the raw meat had been before. “M’full. Think you can stomach a few more bites of the cooked stuff?”
As their meal was getting flipped, the hybrid returned to his self appointed task of removing bone from flesh. Long ears remained perked to listen to Char as he rambled on, it seemed natural that Char wouldn’t know what to call the experiment. Seraph had yet to communicate verbally with him, aside from small huffs or noises. He was only minutely aware of the hedgehog watching him, analyzing his features before announcing a newly assigned name. The action prompting Seraph to pause and gaze over at Char with a tipped head. Was it customary to rename others outside the labs? A swell of pride perked the ears again as Char made mention of their meal and the blades along the end of his tail. The hybrid took great care and keeping those blades sharp and ready incase he found himself in a fight.
While his facial expression didn’t much change, Seraphs tail seemed to wiggle just the slightest at the others’ compliment. The scent of cooked food attracted his attention next as Char moved to divvy up the kabobs. As soon as he’d sat back to enjoy his own, the hybrid had practically pounced on his own, devouring them down to the stick as teeth sunk in and tore at the cooked flesh. If Char had been worried about how quickly he was eating, then the speed at which Seraph had dogged his own meal was likely enough to put those anxieties to bed.
After thoroughly licking his chops he would have returned to sorting his bones, but his attention was once again grabbed as Char offered the last of his own food. Like before, he approached and carefully plucked the bites from the others’ hand. The food wasn’t nearly as filling as raw, pure energy would have been, but the hybrid knew to make do with what he had. Seraph ran his tongue over his claws and started running them through the bristles extending back from his head, repeating the action a few times over to ensure they were all in place. A quick shake out and he was back to separating the last few bones from the pile of meat, the hybrids long tail sweeping up the bones together while he nosed the meat back into its own separate pile.
Task now complete, he began nosing through the bones to find a presentable one. Within the pile he found one that met his exact expectations; likely a piece from the thigh, it was strong and sturdy, would snap nicely even. Picking it up between his jaws, he padded over to Char and placed it in front of his legs, nosing it forward and sitting down expectantly. Only to get back up a moment later; perhaps Char didnt know how to get to the delicious inside? Seraph would have to show him. He nosed around for another decent looking bone and, once found, he returned to sit before Char, digging his teeth in and snapping the bone to present the marrow inside.

project-black-seraph:
The fear taking hold in the experiments system was the only thing that kept him rooted to his spot, eyes analyzing every move either hybrid made. So being a black arms was bad, something to be feared for. Were these two tracked? Pursued and hunted for the blood they shared? If they were, they showed no signs of it. They had food, shelter, time to waste even by building a fire and trying to persuade him to stay. But maybe instead he was lacking something they had. Tension ebbed from his body as Volt lowered his voice, moreso as Harmony lowered herself to the ground with the promise of more food. Slowly, his ears swiveled forward again to show they had his attention and understanding. He debated again whether to speak, questions beginning to bubble to the surface of the hybrids mind as their explanations. If they had escaped, then surely they were being hunted, just as he was? But where were their tags?
Some questions were unfit to voice now, not while they were learning to trust one another. Mimicking the little one’s gesture and laying down seemed a good start, and perhaps the most burning question Seraph had would suffice to start their conversation. Folding back his wings and tucking them close as four eyes settle back on Volt as voice raw low and uncertain after little use rose up over the sounds of the fire. “What…are we?”
A small bit of relief crossed Volt’s face as the other hybrid moved closer to the ground. As long as he didn’t run off, they were getting somewhere and Vokf set his hands down in his lap once it was clear that there wouldn’t be an attack or just the opposite. For the time being Harmony stayed where she was and was just watching carefully. No sudden movements, other than the small wag of the preteen’s tail.
“You and I…” It would be a lie if the older hybrid didn’t say he was surprised by the question. Mostly in part to not knowing that the other could speak up until that point. Part of him had been expecting the use of the hive mind to communicate with him, and there was even more relief that it hadn’t been the case.
After a second, Volt continued.
“Black Arms… in the world my daughter and I come from is a race of aliens that travel the galaxies for resources to survive. You and I are hybrids of that race, mixed with other species in what I can only assume was an attempt to curb the aggression that’s common in that race.” At first, Volt wasn’t sure which pair of eyes to focus on but soon settled on the larger of the four with an understanding smile. “I’d take a guess and say you’ve got more of their dna in you than I do, but that’s not a bad thing…”
Harmony very carefully started to scoot her way backwards until she could safely head back towards the river. The promise made of getting another fish to keep Seraph from leaving was at the forefront of her mind and left Volt to be able to hold a conversation if the other wanted.
“I can’t promise I have all the answers, but I’m willing to fill in any blanks you might have while you stay with us.”
The explanation was brief, but to the point. The dna of the black arms was...not be a bad thing......it confused the hybrid. The sudden fold of his ears giving away that feeling. “But...the researchers. They were terrified of me. project-black-seraph:
Seraph too was glad to find the other still lingering around, awake and about in order to partake in the meal the hybrid brought back, even if he did appear to startle the hedgehog upon reentering the warehouse. Once the kill was securely inside, he let it down and sat obediently beside it to allow Char the chance to come over and examine it, to see what exactly Seraph had brought. Ears perked as the hedgehog seemed surprised, happy even, to see the hybrid return with a meal. As the other approached him, the hybrid sat up more, sniffing at the offered hand and following with his eyes as Char went about gathering wood and starter for a fire. As each box was broken down the sound was just a tad too much for the hybrids sensitive ears. He flit them back for the extent of the breaking, twitching them once each as he watched the growing fire be harbored into a cooking blaze. The warmth and energy provided by the fire was tempting, but the hybrid refrained from taking it. He hadn’t hunted for nothing. Taking it as his que to then bring the meal over, he sank yellow teeth into the meat once more to carry it over and dump it beside the glowing fire. Settling down beside, Seraph glanced between the fire, the meal, and Char. The hybrid could easily eat his portions raw, which he’d done since his escape into the wilderness. A cooked meal, perhaps, would be a nice change of pace for them both. It did however, leave the hybrid wondering if the other was also running from something.
A head was tilted in the creatures direction, Char’s brow quirked in concern when he sat so prone and almost docile near him. It was odd considering the night before the creature had been practically feral. He still wouldn’t approach him with more than what he’d been giving thus far. Arm’s length, and plenty of space.
He would let this creature come to him, if he so chose it.
Upon returning and setting up the wood for the fire, and then getting said fire going, Char did offer an apologetic look for making the ruckus he had. “Everythin’ outside was too wet ta burn. Sorry fer the noise.”
Unlike the blackarms-related male, Char did partake in the fire for a moment, rubbing some sensation back into his fingers from the chill of the night, before he pulled free his cherished pocket knife and flipped it open. The hedgehog exhaled softly before he got to work on processing their meal down into something they could both handle eating, all the while making sure his fingers didn’t get too filthy in the ichor or sinew. He had kept a relatively clean portion of wood out of the fire to place the chunks of meat he cut free on, each piece separated into bite sized chunks.
“This is a big meal, buddy. I sure hope ya can eat more ‘n me, cause it would really suck ta see all this go ta waste.” The hedgehog had grabbed a few twigs from the outdoors before coming in, and after sharpening said twigs, he speared the meat onto them, effectively creating a grouping of cabobs for each of them. He managed to situate them between pinched between a few bits of debris, though frowned when they neared the fire. “Er…you probably have a better nose than me. If it starts ta burn, give me a nudge, an’ I can flip em.”
There was still a large portion of the animal left, Char peering at it with wilted ears. “I doubt ya know how ta dry meat, eh? Cause I sure as hell don’t. Then again, I can’t hang around long enough fer it ta dry.” In fact, staying in this spot for as long as he had already had him feeling antsy and on edge.
The sizzling and pop of meat filled the air as it began to heat up and cook over the fire, Char dropping himself down onto his ass and making himself comfortable close to the fires edge. He spared a small glimpse down toward the meat, not missing the small look that the creature had shown towards it as well, the beginnings of a genuine smile lifting the corner of his lip. “Ya know ya don’t have ta wait till it’s cooked. Ya don’t look the type ta cook yer own meals, no offense. So I assume yer used ta eatin’ this stuff raw.”
A piece of meat was pinched between Char’s fingers after he had discarded his gloves, and then held outward on an open palm. “Seriously, big guy. If yer hungry, dig in. Ya deserve it after bringin’ us this huge meal. Hell, ya deserve more. I thought fer sure ya were gonna bolt when ya woke. I thought ya did run off. M’seriously glad ya decided ta stick around. I couldn’t hope ta repay ya fer this food.” He hadn’t had literal protein like this in ages. It was something he was sorely lacking in his diet due to his time constraints, and the fact that he had no clue how to cook the meat itself.
This morning, was almost like an experiment. Maybe with this creatures help, he could tell when the food was safe for consumption on his part. On his own? Char was likely to undercook the food, and more likely to overcook it into a blackened crisp.
It was interesting, to watch Chars process. He used a knife rather than his claws, could only eat the meat if it were cooked. Seraph tipped his head. He found it strange. How had Char managed so long if he could eat the meat raw on a moments notice? Watching as the hedgehog offered the small chunk of meat, the hybrid sniffed and quickly snatched it up in his teeth. project-black-seraph:
The hybrid wasn’t the heaviest sleeper, so he was relatively surprised when he found himself in a mutual curl with the strange hedgehog the next morning. While he appreciated the sharing of body heat (the warehouse was drafty, and absolutely got colder overnight), it was strange to wake up beside someone else. He gave Char a small sniff, ears perking at the subtlest sound of the other’s stomach growling. Hungry. Seraph could fix that. A simple exchange for being friendly and keeping him company, the hybrid figured. Carefully, the alien untangled himself from the hedgehog and softly padded to the open exit of the warehouse to begin his search for some food - preferably some larger prey to fill their bellies. He was an exceptional hunter too, so no doubt he could find something large enough for the pair to eat, especially now that the sun was barely risen. In fact, within minutes of stepping into the forest he’d already caught the scent of prey! ~~ Within the hour Seraph had brought back a large meal for them both, dragging it along between his teeth and into the warehouse, still moving with some caution in case the other might still be asleep. If the hybrid had any more energy to spare, perhaps he could have gotten a fire going. But, as it was, he was frequently running on fumes. Solid food and meat were not at all the fuel his body really needed.
The hedgehog had hardly moved when Seraph shifted carefully from their makeshift nest. If anything, h merely readjusted himself into the musty shipping blanket, fingers clutching into the fabric as he curled into his usual protective ball during sleep.
The fugitive only began to stir when the chill of the morning started to take hold of his thinly clad body, small shivers causing him to rouse from sleep. Despite the sleep, much needed at this point, he still felt critically exhausted…and hungry. But the hunger, he could ignore in favor of something that jarred him once his thoughts became more coherent.
The creature had left…
The shipping blanket was cool beside him, all residual warmth having escaped with the absence of the other male, and ears wilted. At least he had had someone to chat with for a short while. But it was blatantly obvious that whatever the creature was, it had been feral. Mostly feral. It didn’t make the sting of his absence any easier though, but at least he wouldn’t be cooped up in here and afraid.
It seemed the weather had let up as well. Char dusted himself off and righted himself on the shipping blanket, yawning as he rubbed an eye. Afterwards, he rubbed at his arms to bring back some of the faded warmth and was about to push himself to his feet when he heard something.
The scraping of something heavy against the ground. Something drawing nearer.
Instantly alert, he was on his feet in silence and preparing to make a grab for his gun, or a bolt for the exit, when said exit was suddenly occupied by the very creature he’d thought had run off in the night. The relief that filled Char was practically tangible, especially in the way his shoulders physically relaxed and a soft breath left him.
And not a moment later, he noticed the meal. Had the creature been out hunting? For both of them? “I dunno about you, buddy, but I can’t eat that raw. Give me a few minutes. I can scrape us t’gether a quick fire. You just relax in here, alright?” Internally, Char was more than just a little pleased that Seraph had returned. Externally, his smile was warmed and soft, expressing his gratitude to the other. As he passed by the creature, he kept his voice quiet and movements smooth so as not to alarm him.
“M’glad ya came back, bud.” With the light filtering in through cracked or splintered wood, making out Seraphs features was so much easier. He was…definitely a sight to behold. Frightening for sure, but…there was more than that. His colorations were different. Whatever he was it clearly wasn’t Mobian. Not fully. But he didn’t seem like a wild beast either.
Curious aquas absorbed every detail, giving what he could see of Seraph a lingering once over, admiring the wings, the long ears, the extra eyes, the tail, all of it from a respectable distance and not daring to reach out or touch unless the creature prompted him for it. “What are you? Ya don’t look like a Mobian, per se….but ya definitely aren’t just some wild animal.” Mostly spoken to himself. And after a few more seconds of observing the alien, Char shook his head, his smile returning.
“Well, whatever ya are, yer badass, that’s fer sure~. Took down that prey all yer own, huh? Bet yer a force ta be reckoned with~.” And Char wasn’t complaining in the slightest. He offered his fingers out for a sniff if the creature so chose, though with a mawful of prey, he was more than likely busy. Afterwards, Char headed out himself to collect some firewood.
Finding dry wood was the hardest part. But he managed to find dried, dead brush beneath some wooden panels leaned against the building. Since all the wood outdoors was no doubt still wet, he figured that maybe breaking down one of the old wooden crates inside for the fire would be best. Upon reentering, he dropped down a bit of the brush, then got to work on pulling one of the crates out. “It’s gonna be a little loud bud. Don’t get spooked, alright.” He tapped a foot to the side of the crate to gesture and indicate his intentions.
And a moment later, he tapped into a hint of his speed and sent said boot into the crate, effectively splintering it to bits. By the time he had broken it down into manageable chunks, he had broken a small sweat, the wood piled near the brush. There was plenty of ventilation within the abandoned warehouse to start a fire indoors so long as it was near the actual door, and thankfully, the floor was concrete. It took only a few minutes to set up, Char striking a few stones he’d bought in together atop the brush until it lit. He ungloved his hands and cupped his palms around the small building flame, blowing softly into it until it rose in height and volume, soon the flames licking their way into the rest of the dried and rotted wood. “Tada~! Warmth~! Now, I ain’t a chef, lil’ pup, so don’t expect some gourmet meal outta this. But anythin’ is better than nothin’, right?”

Too invested in cleaning, Volts reaction to seeing his tags went unnoticed by the alien. But the younger one’s words definitely perked an ear. Like them? He tipped his head as four eyes settled on the little hybrid, watching her as she moved to her tent and fetched the marshed mellows. Who’s ‘them’? Seraph cautiously approached her to sniff the little snack, wandering what it was that she was talking about.
Perhaps it would have made sense had Seraph been less focused on the treat offered to him. Shifting to rest on his legs, rather than sitting on all fours, Seraph reached out for the small round foodstuff. Holding it between his claws and giving it a small lick, the hybrid came to the decision that it was most definitely something he was willing to eat.
Though, with no molars to properly smush and chew the snack, the feral alien looked too much like a pet dog attempting to clean it’s mouth of peanut butter. It was no doubt tasty, of course, but it took a good few moments of trying to check it properly before he was able to swallow and then process Volts’ question. And even then, the reaction to come needed a moment more. Seraph only knew for the words to mean something bad, something wrong. He was all too quick to expect something bad to come now that the older hybrid recognized him for what he was. Almost submissively, long ears went back, and he dropped to all fours to back away as wide eyes locked onto Volt. No sign of malice in the hybrids face, but rather fear.
While Volt, and Harmony had gotten quite a kick out of watching the other trying to eat the treat given to them; the mood had quickly shifted. One hand raised in a motion that hopefully still showed that the older hybrid meant no harm as his expression softened.
“Hey.. It’s okay.” He kept his voice calm and low, gesturing with his other hand to himself. “You’re among friends. You’re safe.”
“Yeh. Daddy’s got Black Arms in ‘im too. Ya dun gotta be afraid of us!” Harmony added while her father nodded his head and slowly raised the hand he used to gesture towards himself to tap the red markings around his eyes. Already the preteen was trying to figure out something that would help the other to relax again.
“I know you can understand us. We’re not going to hurt you. My daughter and I are also experiments from our world’s GUN. I escaped a long time ago and rescued Harmony shortly after.” Although he wasn’t sure if saying all that was going to help or hurt their want to put the other hybrid at ease, Volt still made the attempt as Harmony shifted onto all fours herself and got as low to the ground as she could to show that neither of them would be a threat.
It felt like they might have been at a stalemate. Volt worries that any movements made would send the other into a panic and run off but he also wanted to figure out a way to prove that they were telling the truth. A moment was taken to consider their options, only for Harmony to speak up.
“I’ll go catch another fishie fer ya t’ eat if ya dun run away. If yer still hungry. Or I can getcha one of the blankets we got in the tent t’ stay nice and warm by the fire. Please dun run away.”
“What...are we?”
Hey, send some one word prompts over to my artblog~ @penthousedragon
Is it okay for Harmony to try to huddle up with him. It's too noise and she's not happy.
Wing cacoon time. Its comfy, and the noise gets dulled: Seraph welcomes the small hybrid.
Too many noises. Too loud. And far too many explosions over the city skyline. Time for the hybrid to duck further back into his cave.
project-black-seraph:
One set of eyes had already begun to droop, as Seraph lowered his head to rest on his claws. His ears laid back and sat comfortably against the quill-like features trailing from his head, the experiments breathing slowly beginning to even out. It was strange even for Seraph to feel so comfortable with a stranger as to let himself be vulnerable enough to fall asleep beside them, but this one….seemed honest.
Seraph couldn’t offer the other any words of reassurance, but as he began to slip under the cover of a light sleep a new sound emerged from the creatures chest. Not a purr, but a sound more akin to a hive of bees. A light hum that started off patchy and was more felt than heard, but as Seraph slept it briefly got louder. Whether the experiment was aware of it or not would be unknown to the outside observer, but Seraph was unable to produce the sound on command. A shame really, considering how soothing the sound could be – for either party.
The fugitive watched with softened eyes as the creature lowered it’s guard and dozed right before his very eyes. His chest swelled with a growing warmth and fondness, and the fingers that had been hesitating earlier, were slow to rest atop the Darkling’s head, his touches featherlight so as not to rouse him from his rest.
But it was the growing sound of those rumbling murrs that truly drew him in, Char’s ears lifting and expression one of astonishment. While not quite as cat-like in nature, the thrumming purr was still incredibly soothing. Char found himself near drawn to tears at the comforting lull of the others contentment.
Fingers brushed down along the creatures head and the back of his neck, almost experimentally, as if testing the waters, but always cautious, never daring to pass into a territory that might be considered vulnerable. The last thing he wanted was to rouse the Darkling and him feel threatened by his actions. Char marveled at the texture of quill-like structures and the warmth emanating from their flesh.
As the vibrations filtered into his fingertips, he couldn’t hold back the warmed smile from his lips, or the way his lids drooped. Char only lifted his hand away to cover his maw and stifle the yawn that grew within him. Exhaustion weighed heavily on him, but he couldn’t risk sleeping as of yet. And he’d promised to remain awake and keep guard. But the longer the sound of the droning murr drew on, the harder it was to keep his weighted lids open. His head lilted forward sleepily and Char flinched when he nearly toppled over from the drowsiness.
Fighting against the encroaching sleep was a losing battle, his head tilting once more mere moments later. The ex-convict drew himself tighter, his hues sliding completely closed and mind slowly growing blank as he reveled in the sound of the creature beside him. Even after preventatively straightening himself, the moment that sleep claimed the hedgehog in it’s unrelenting grasp after spending so many days awake, he found himself naturally gravitating toward the warmth at his side. There was a reason he rarely, if ever slept beside another. And this was it.
He sank down along the wall, then instinctively curled into the emanating heat beside him. Being very hedgehog-like in nature, the cold was a natural deterrent, and unconscious as he was, he sought out the warmth of the Darkling at his side. Char leaned heavily against the other male, and once the warmth suffused him, the quietest of purrs rose within his own chest, rumbling in nature and growing the longer the night wore on, the sound practically singing in unison with Seraphs own. A nose came to nuzzle into the others presented ack and fingers subconsciously began to clench and unclench in his sleep, kneading subtly against wherever his hands had come to rest, be it air, or the very hybrid that he currently rested against.
He gave Char a small sniff, ears perking at the subtlest sound of the other's stomach growling. Solid food and meat were not at all the fuel his body really needed.
project-black-seraph:
The experiment’s eyes darted between the pair as they spoke, politely waiting as Harmony ate. It was somewhat unsettling to be realized for his intelligence so quickly, the few he’s run into have always simply assumed he was feral and left it at that. Tagged ears swiveled as he briefly considered speaking, but the thought brought unease. The agents that contained him always held a level of disgust towards him, and whatever a ‘black arms’ was. Whatever connotations the term held were clearly not good, and Seraph didn’t want to squander and opportunity for a good filling meal. So he wisely kept his mouth shut. At least until the other male offered up the remains of his own meal, which the hybrid cautiously approached before digging yellow teeth into the tail and pulling it a few feet away so he could settle down and finish it off. The brief closeness meant Seraphs ears were turned fully towards Volt, tags in full display. They didn’t irritate the experiments ears, but the GUN logo displayed on the fronts (and also the back, but that side wasn’t visible and therefore hid the tracking bar) could speak volumes about the creature. As he ate Seraph considered the idea of speaking a little more. The pair were friendly, given how much of their meal they were willing to share with a complete stranger. The little one especially seemed keen on being friends, what harm could it do? Licking his claws clean of remnants the hybrid decided. First he would see what a marshed mellow was. If it was tasty, he would speak.
The biggest sign, at least to the pair, that the other was intelligent was that the body language hadn’t changed when they spoke. There was understanding instead of confusion and not a constant tilting of a head from one side of the other as some species tended to show when processing information. Plus the hybrid pair always sought to be kind to anyone that came across them, unless they had intended harm and that had hardly been the case for the one being offered their food. Body language was extremely important and a tell on what could happen in certain scenarios, which was something Volt had taught Harmony early on.
But Volt hadn’t been expecting to see a very familiar insignia glaring at him with the light of the fire. That harsh reality setting in like a lead weight in his stomach as the other took the offered fish and stepped back to eat it. It had been Harmony who spotted the way her father’s quills had slightly bristled and his hand that had been holding the fish twitched as if barely being held back from reaching out and touching one of those tags. Emerald eyes watched as he took a deep, shuddering, breath and looked away before turning back to see what had gotten him so worked up.
“Yer like us, ain’tcha?” Now that she had a better view, the preteen could see the logo and stuck her tongue out in distaste for the organization. Even though in their Zone, Commander Rook was doing a good job of cleaning up the mess of her predecessor, there was still a lot of work to be done. “Ya ain’t gotta worry ‘bout them here cuz my daddy and I will kick their ass.”
She might have been jumping to conclusion, but it was mainly because of how often her and her father had been on the run from the military during her life. Still, Harmony popped into the tent and grabbed the bag of marshmallows, sitting back down where she had been before reaching in to pull one out and offer. “Here. They’re homemade so not sugary sweet like the ones ya buy at a store. Is a good dessert.”
There was so much going through Volt’s mind, now that he had seen those tags. The cruelty of them not lost at all and the older hybrid wondered if, maybe, once the other trusted them; he would be allowed to remove them. No one deserved to be tagged like that and there was a small part of him that was even slightly grateful that their Zone’s creators had gone for the UV ink tattoo in their ears over a tag. But after a moment of watching Harmony and the other, the one nagging question finally refused to leave him alone till he asked it.
“You’re part Black Arms too… Aren’t you?”
Too invested in cleaning, Volts reaction to seeing his tags went unnoticed by the alien. But the younger one’s words definitely perked an ear. Like them?
