Welcome to Project L!

Project L is a project that will take place over the course of the next 8 weeks. Over these 8 weeks I will be posting 50 artists I have never heard of! A good amount of these will be photographers and the rest will be a mix of different medias! Feel free to send me artists to post as long as they have professional sites and are not primarily based on social medias.

#50: Sam Ferris

Corner of King and George | Windswept, 2020

Sam Ferris is an Australian photographer who has certainly been places. At the moment he is based in Sydney, Australia. In the first photo, I have to stop and appreciate the lighting on the street. Sam explains how in November, there is a 30 minute window in the evening where the sunlight reflects off of a window in such a way that it creates a cinematic effect on the street. He says he's been photographing here for five years. I love the lighting in this photo, not just because of his determination to capture the perfect shot in this light, but also because the majority of it is so dark. We get to see the sky, a good part of the woman's face and outfit, juxtaposed with the darkness behind her. I also adore the second photo for its use of light and color, along with the frenzy that is the 'windswept' hair that we see. Also, I can't help but notice the jogger's shadow, though to me it isn't the main subject, which I believe is a good thing. http://www.samferris.com.au/

#49: Pelle Sten

The Valley | The Couple

Pelle Sten is a Swedish photographer who started his career by taking photos of metal bands in the 90s. Today, however he mainly focuses in street photography. These two are both from his collection, Out From the Shadows. In this collection, I believe he really does "capture the unreality in reality." I adore the use of light and shadow in terms of how we see these people. It is as if the shadows are totally different people from the people in the photographs, and I love that. https://www.lensculture.com/pelle-sten

#48: Bego Amaré

Still Beating

Bego Amaré is a photographer based in Madrid. She focuses a lot on light, and believes that anything with good light is a good subject. She attended the Lens Visual Arts School in Madrid, and has taken many photos in the area. I love these photos very much for two very different reasons. The first: The lighting! Wow, it is perfect. The shadows against the orange wall, the fact that we can see the last of the person's leg walking by, leaving a tad bit of tension that's fulfilled by the person's shadow, is wonderful. Meanwhile, on the right, the pespective of the floor leading up to the person facing away from the camera really says something else. I also love the props to their right and left, as if they have just gotten a break from work and are just sitting outside. #47: Alana Colville

What Was Lost to 2020

Alana Colville is an American photographer. She ditched her in-progress degree in the medical field in 2020 in order to pursue her dream of photography, and she is currently attending the Academy of Art University, aiming to get a MFA in Photography. These two photos are from a collection titled What Was Lost to 2020, which I believe should speak for itself. We all feel this way, which makes this piece rather hard hitting. The silhouettes of where we could have been, places we were supposed to go. It captures billions of people's experiences in a simple photoset so well.

#46: Ed Peters

Scalpels of the Sun

Ed Peters is a photographer who is currently based in New Jersey. However, these photos were taken all over Mexico, which I find fascinating. The title in this case really ties in with the subject of the photos. We may think the subjects are the people, the walls, the colors, and the trees. To some people, that's true. But to me, and maybe this was Ed's intention, the subject is light itself. The way the light casts shadows upon subjects, the vibrancy the light gives to the colors, these are the parts of the photo I see first.

#45: Andrea Pozzoni

The light of the Mediterranean

Andrea Pozzoni is an Italian photographer who plays around with geometry and patterns in light in his photos. He focuses in street photography. I love these photos because of how much they look like a simple collage of squares and cut outs. It very may well be; I am not one to decipher that. It takes away from the magic of it, I feel. The simple colors, the use of geometry, and the lack of depth in these photos just makes it all look like a storybook. http://www.andreapozzoni.com/

#44: Giannis Giannelos

LANDWORKS

Giannis Giannelos is a Greek photographer based in Athens, Greece. He looks to evoke an emotional response from the viewer through his photographs. He specializes in landscapes and has photographed many of them across Greece. LANDWORKS is a collection of photos of landscapes as taken from above. There is a lot of repitition in these photos, and there is a very interesting color palette in them. I like in the second one how the road leads you up and down the piece, giving you something to latch onto. It is almost like the only familiar thing to hold onto, because if it wasn't there I would think it was just a quilt. http://www.giannelosphotography.gr/

#43: Alessandro Michelazzi

Alessandro Michelazzi is a fashion photographer based in Italy. He got his Bachelor degree in Photography and Graphic Design at the University of Florence in 2009. His vision in photography is to find a great balance between color and composition. He has been working in the industry for well over 15 years. #42: Rii Abrego

Rii Abrego is a Latina illustrator and comic book artist who currently resides in the southern USA. She has worked on plenty of comic books, and is currently aiming to create her own graphic novel with Random House in 2023. Her art is soft, gentle, and speaks volumes. I love the way Rii uses colors in her art and her understanding of unity in an illustration. https://riiabrego.com/

#41: Akine Coco

Akine Coco is a Japanese photographer who captures "anime-like" photos from their hometown of Fukui. They describe their work as "minimal" and in each of their photos there is usually some semblance of blue. I love the framing in each of the photos because everything is so intentional. For example, we can see the shadow of the peace sign through the circle, which is shown in the shadow of the circle, too. #40: Sicong Wu

With The Light | Untile

Sicong Wu is a Chinese photographer who attended Manhattan Community College. I am absolutely wowed by her work. The use of light to make the piece appear otherworldly is amazing. Moreover, there are no people in these shots except one, and in Untile, the view looks impossible to get to! Besides this, the colors are just desaturated enough to the point where the beauty of them can still be appreciated, while the dullness of life is still able to be seen in them. https://www.lensculture.com/sicong-wu

#39: Thomas Hackenberg

Welcome to Quirk Street!

Thomas Hackenberg is a German photographer who, as you can see in these photos, captures moments that cannot be found elsewhere. I LOVE Welcome to Quirk Street! because of how characteristic it is. There is so much happening in each photo that takes us a minute to decipher and find out what is going on. In the first photo, we see a child wearing a striped head mask, and nobody is looking at the camera except (presumably) him. In the second, we see an angel and a Minnie Mouse surrounded by candy wrappers, and while the angel attends to the Minnie, the Minnie stares directly at the camera. It is so weird, so wild. Eager Steps | Pretty Witch

Tufan Cevahirci is a Turkish photographer who has been taking photos of his hometown ever since he was little. In these photos he captures the whimsical, perhaps not as seen moments in life. Moments that we oftennot neglect, especially in places we do not care to learn more about. #37: Krzysztof Bednarski

Reflective Moments

Krzysztof Bednarski is a Polish photographer who focuses on minimal parts of the world. He aims to capture the urban aesthetic and to 'blur the line between documenting and storytelling.' To which I say, I get it. When I saw these photos, the first thing I thought was that I understood. Whatever emotion these people were experiencing is one I can resonate with, because I have definitely been in situations similar. #36: Julie Blackmon

High Chair | Floatie

Julie Blackmon is an American photographer from Springfield, Missouri. She attended Missouri State University, and after finding a liking for art, decided to expand by taking photos at home of her domestic home experience and building from there. I adore the limited field of view in these photos so much. It feels like a children's book illustration. This is from a collection called Domestic Vacations, and I adore every part of it. #35: Olivia Hintz

Two Sides of One Coin | An Earthly Encounter

Olivia Hintz is a painter based in New York City, who graduated from Purchase College's Conservatory of Fine Art with a BFA. She focuses on illustrations and story books, and has even illustrated for many children's books, despite the dark, brooding nature of the arts I've chosen. Her painting skills are immaculate, and the details can be seen even from far away. The eyes in Two Sides of One Coin tell such a story, even if you aren't aware of the character's life story.
