>still got his ass handed to him the whole time and both he and Rin realised that had Cú gaebolged him on that first night they’d be goners

FSN UBW abridged really does capture it the best, Emiya acting outwardly cocky and confident, while internally he’s warning Rin he’s about to get his ass handed to him royally and lowkey screaming
Emiya: “Your funeral. Don’t blame me when you’re taken by sur… prise? …wait–”
Shirou: “What’s wrong, Satan? Losing your nerve?”
Emiya: “No… something about this situation just seems– Oh, AWAY!!”
Rin: “Where do you think you’re going?”
Emiya: “I CHOSE LIFE!”

Emiya: “NOPE!! HE WHO RUNS AWAY AND DOESN’T FIGHT, RUNS AWAY FIRST!!”
