It’s interesting how this is the first song in this album, which marked that strong shift in his career. Opening the album with a song about “a place I found” underground, and how “they’re alive, they’re awake while the rest of the world is asleep” seems to predict everything that would come later on in all his albums, the rain dogs, the hobos, the outcasts, the tabletop joes, the poor edwards, the eyeball kids, Blackjack Ruby and Nimrod Cain, people without direction in life. “There’s a world going on underground,” and he sure tapped into it.

Anyway, great song.
