"The Mutant Salon sat in the Broad’s bowels, and was indicated by a neon sign. Inside this gallery frothed anarchic behaviors loosely tethered to the conceit of a beauty parlor. Tables strewn with wigs, nail polish and various potions scattered across the floor. In the dimly-lit center gyrated a family of Mutants, who cut up wigs and squeezed their unclad bodies into nylon stockings. At the nucleus of the Mutant makeover extravaganza sat a small circle of folks, one of whom was a naked man wearing a huge nose ring made out of wire and paper. He had tucked in his penis and was making a crown out of Play-Doh and paper."

Free Mutant Salon: We Make Each Other Beautiful Saturday June 25, 2016 9:30 – 11:00 Outside Main Entrance, the Broad 221 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012 DTLA Free performance featuring: Project Rage Queen Isaac Ledesma Sarah Gail Armstrong Gaylord Fiend As part of the Broad’s Summer Happenings, Mutant Salon is creating a performance that moves from the Oculus Hall, inside the museum’s anus, through the belly of the beast and out through its mouth, to the outside main entrance of the Broad. We are bringing Mutant Salon outside for our sisters, our community, and audience members to experience this special performance for free, without need for paid admission. Bring your looks, lights, and sparkles. All are welcome to partake in the creation of all this beauty! Mutant Salon’s members and collaborators for this event include: Sarah Gail Armstrong Marvin Astorga Lena Daly Gaylord Fiend Elisa Harkins Veli-Matti Hoikka Oree Holban Young Joon Kwak Isaac Ledesma Alli Miller Project Rage Queen (Dalton Chase, Alice Cunt, Travis R-D, Vik Victorious) Founded by Young Joon Kwak in 2012, Mutant Salon is a beauty salon and platform for collaborative performance that that frequently pops up at various venues throughout Los Angeles and beyond. Mutant Salon strives to foster connections between LGBTQ POC, women, and mutant communities, celebrating an ethos of transformation and critical togetherness in the act of self care. In addition to offering haircuts, psychic readings, makeup, nails, tattoos, and other treatments, Mutant Salon embraces a continual metamorphosis of itself with each iteration to offer new aesthetic experiences and experimental modes of engagement. This performance will use Mutant Salon’s new “musical beauty instruments” and custom cosmetics so that each transformative gesture from using the beauty tools (such as a makeup brush, powder puff, etc.) mutates into a live polyphonic sound composition. If you would like to purchase tickets to check out the earlier part of our performance in the Oculus Hall, in addition to performances and sets by Narcissister, Perfume Genius, Lotic, and Cindytalk, and access to the galleries: https://ticketing.thebroad.org/events/d32a5b05-09a0-8143-25c8-afb127851948 mutantsalon.com

Honor Fraser Gallery in conjunction with Commonwealth & Council present ATTACK, SUSTAIN, RELEASE, DECAY, a performance collaboration joining performance and media collectives Mutant Salon, Experimental Half Hour, and Project Rage Queen.
Referencing a synthesizer's parameters of the soundshaping envelope generator, ASRD uses a diagrammatic score to orient sound, movement, voice, and video amidst a ritual of preparatory beautification. The sound enabled tools used by the performers to apply makeup, cut hair, and otherwise beautify themselves are such that each transformative gesture undertaken by the performers triggers different sound effects and affects, highlighting the body as a ritual site of transformation. ASRD also incorporates chromakey (“green screen”) technology with the performers wielding matching chromakeyed objects and costumes, reimagining the body and site in a relationship of indeterminate materiality. ASRD offers a collective vision of self care to expand parameters for synthesis: ATTACK (Identity), SUSTAIN (The Flame That Lights the Way Toward the Destruction of the Patriarchy), RELEASE (The Monster), DECAY (& Regenerate Our Bodies). Project Rage Queen: Travis D, Alice Cunt, Vik Victorious
Experimental Half Hour: Eva Aguila, Brock Fansler

A VOYAGE THROUGH THE EXNOZONE A Voyage Through The EXNoZone is an immersive installation that uses sci-fi landscapes, fantasy, sexuality, the impossible, and the use of the body as sculpture to create a seductive and mind-altering experience that explores the possibility of a new world rising up from the ashes from an old system–a world free from the constraints of our time. The installation combines video documentation and sound to create an intense, highly synchronized, dynamic introduction to a sci-fi reality where social progress triumphs over traditional ideas about gender identity and sexual orientation. Featuring Alice Cunt, Dull Finn, and Travis D with support from Sofia Moreno and Xara Thustra.
