President Trump Just Denied Thousands of Puerto Rican Deaths Following Hurricane Maria

Ignoring the Puerto Rican government’s assessment, President Donald Trump falsely claimed on Thursday, September 13, on Twitter that Hurricane Maria did not cause the deaths of nearly 3,000 American citizens.

Trump said on Twitter that the acknowledged death toll in Puerto Rico, which has increased as additional data and death registry records were released, was “done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible.”

While ignoring the projected death toll of thousands of deaths, Trump suggested a much lower number that has not been reflected in official reports, of “anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths,” adding that “as time went by it did not go up by much.”

On August 29, the Puerto Rican government raised the official Hurricane Maria death toll from 64 to 2,975 after George Washington University published an independent report estimating that there were 2,975 additional deaths in Puerto Rico due to the storm and its aftermath from September 2017 through the end of February 2018, as compared with the same time period in previous years.
