Assault Victim Has Final Say With Fashion Photo Shoot

The recent homophobic attack on Newtown resident Isaac Keatinge, 25, sent shock-waves through the famously diverse inner-western hub.

On his way home from a friend’s party last month, Keatinge was allegedly singled out by his group of attackers for no reason other than wearing a fab dress and makeup – outraging locals and sparking Reclaim the Street’s hugely successful “Keep Newtown Weird” rally.

In response, Heaps Gay recently sent our fave photographer, Bradley Tennant, along to meet up with Isaac and a group of his close friends.

Our goal was to give the story a much needed positive twist, proving once and for all that not only are the gender binaries of clothing completely outdated and fucked up, but there is a true strength in expressing your best self unashamedly.

Black Men Enlighten “Out” Magazine on The Origins of Gay Slang

Let’s be honest - gay media lacks representation of people of color. Not only that, they don’t want to acknowledge the origins of mainstream gay trends. On May 9, Out magazine published an article about how straight people steal slang and other trends from gay people, but did not bother to educate themselves on the true origins of those trends first. Needless to say the article sparked some outrage on the Internet. Hopefully that’ll teach Out a lesson, because if you want to support minorities, you can’t just pick out one, you have to support them all!

BREAKING: Obama administration will tell schools transgender students can use bathrooms of their choice

The guidance is not legally binding, but it reinforces the administration's position that it will take legal action against violators.

Tomorrow, the Obama administration is expected to issue guidance regarding transgender students in schools. More specifically, the guidelines will tell schools they cannot discriminate against transgender students with regards to bathrooms, housing, sports teams, and many more contexts.

President Obama has been an advocate for trans students for a while, but this will likely be the most direct statement on behalf of trans students yet. 

“When a school provides sex-segregated activities and facilities, transgender students must be allowed to participate in such activities and access such facilities consistent with their gender identity,” says a copy of the letter obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The rules apply to restrooms, locker rooms, sports teams, fraternities, sororities, housing, and more.

According to the guidance, school officials cannot require that a transgender student provide identifying documents, such as a birth certificate, or undergo any form of medical validation to qualify. “There is no medical diagnosis or treatment requirement that students must meet as a prerequisite to being treated consistent with their gender identity,” says the letter to school administrators.

BREAKING: Italy approves same-sex civil unions!

The law, opposed by the Vatican, stops short of gay marriage but brings Italy more in line with other Western European countries.

For the first time ever, same-sex couples in Italy can have their relationships legally recognized.

Italy today passed a bill that extends civil unions protections to same-sex couples. Though it does not recognize same-sex marriages or allow adoptions of a same-sex partner’s child, it does extend new civil rights that were previously inaccessible to anyone besides different-sex married couples.

President Sergio Mattarella has a month to sign the legislation, a step that is usually a formality. The law must then be published in the official government journal before taking effect. Same-sex couples should be able to register their partnerships in Italian municipalities in September, after relevant regulations have been drafted, according to Monica Cirinnà, the Democratic Party senator who sponsored the bill.

Ms. Cirinnà said she was “partially satisfied” with the passage of the law, but vowed to fight the inequalities that persist. Her party plans to present a bill on adoption that could fill in some of the gaps, “but it won’t be a simple or rapid operation,” she acknowledged.

Despite Italy’s “cultural problem toward anything that is different,” gay marriage remained a goal, she said. She described the vote on Wednesday as “just a first step.”
