Why are you upside down again
Grace: what do you want to eat?
Ellie in Simon’s head: the souls of the innocent
Simon: a me-burger
Ellie in Simon’s head:No!
Simon:…2 me-burgers
Ryland Grace would know slang.
And like, not in the nebulous, half-understanding way that one's grandparents are wont to. Putting aside the fact that he's still pretty darn young for most of his teaching career, likely spending a lot of time doom scrolling to kill the lonely: He was a seventh-grade science teacher; he heard kids say weird things he didn't understand every single day. At a certain point, you start googling this stuff, just to make sure it means what the children tell you it means.
I'd go so far as to say he would do serious research to keep up with the times, either out of autistic fear of social rejection/fascination with the evolution of language OR just to mess with his kids. Actually both.
I see him as the kind of teacher who's like:
SO FUCKING CRAZY about that little "wait- don't go anywhere" bit during the clock scene like. he holds his finger up and rocky immediately copies it, reaching right to the xenonite to get as close as possible. no fear. no hesitation. ☝️<- this means something and I will engage and attempt to understand with an open mind and an open heart. and grace smiles, easy as breathing, and taps his finger back. almost without thinking. he just boop. right back atcha. stay right there. we're doing this. I'm gonna figure this out for you. we're both leaning in no matter how terrifying and unimaginable it is. they have both been through such intense grief and fear and desperation and mind-melting isolation and confusion and boop. here we are. and it's so easy.
eva stratt they can never make me hate you
another project hail mary observation:
I noticed that Grace was looking at golden plaques with inscription and realized they look like something made based off the Voyager Golden Record, made by Astrophysicist and Cornell University professor Carl Sagan and singer John Lennon. It was sent out in the probes Voyager 1 and 2, I believe. It has a message etched on it which says, "To the makers of music, all worlds, all times."
For reference, pictures below show the Voyager Golden Record.
People keep talking about the science in PHM like yeah, obviously. Math saves the world, equations translate the universe, whatever.
But what gets me is how hard the story leans into something else: Music!!!!
Like the whole movie quietly argues that sure, math is universal because it is precise. It lets completely different species understand each other.
But music is what lets them feel each other.
When we first see Grace's old memories, the first one shown was him teaching the kids about soundwaves being affected by frequency. This is probably a foreshadowing that it will mean so much in the next few parts of the plot. Specifically Rocky.
Rocky’s language is not framed like cold data, even if it technically is. It is patterned, tonal, almost harmonic. Grace does not just decode it, he recognizes it. There is a difference. Even in the book, he always mentions how Rocky drops an octave when he expresses sadness and grief.
And that is why it hits that even someone like Eva Stratt, who reduces everything to outcomes, to sacrifice, to necessity, can still be pulled into something as unnecessary as music.
The movie soundtrack uses songs in many different languages, and it quietly circles back to the voyager golden record. That record was created in case any life beyond earth ever finds it, to teach them what humanity is. In the same way, the music in the film becomes a kind of message too. It represents human diversity, culture, and emotion, everything that exists beyond just Grace and his perspective, showing what it means to be human to someone who is not human at all.
There are 27 songs from all around the world put in the Golden Record btw. <3
Science lets different life forms understand each other, yes. But something like music exists on a smaller, quieter level. It does not need translation in the same way. It just needs recognition.
And maybe that is the point, that even at the edge of everything, when all you have left is survival and logic and numbers, the thing that still reaches across the gap is not just understanding. It is resonance.
Music transcends all cultures and now, extraterrestrial life! ^°^
Their entire dynamic in three lines. Also hello foreshadowing.
like as far as headcanons go I can't get over how perfectly the "stratt digging her nails into the palm of her hands" tic works on a symbolic level. of course she stains her hands with blood. of course it's her own.
this is exactly how it feels
It's a third, worse thing
nothing on this god's green earth can convince me that peter parker doesn't have an ao3 account where he is elbows deep in a 'rise of skywalker' fix-it fic. like, fully invested in it, been writing it pre-spider bite with ned, who is just as enthusiastic about it. but the thing is, it's really hard to do updates when you are literally spider-man.
every three months he'll post and in the author's note there's some shit like "sorry this took a while, i got shot seven times :/" or "i know it's been a minute, i literally got hit by a bus and then stabbed in the leg, but i'm all good!" or sometimes ned would log in and post with a note "hey i'm a friend posting on the author's behalf, they're healing from severe hypothermia but promised an update, so here it is!"
and the fic just gets increasingly more popular for the author notes alone. a good handful of the comments are something along the lines of "i'm not even in the star wars fandom, i'm just here to see if the author is good" or "every update i cheer for another day the author gets to live at this point"
and any reader who is a native new yorker kind of pieces together that holy shit the author might be spider-man because the timeline adds up, and they just fully embrace it. spider-man will stop a robbery and the guy behind the counter will ask when the next chapter will be up. spider-man returns a stolen backpack to a girl and she'll tell him that he "really got poe's voice down so well, it's really impressive."
ned thinks it is hilarious. mj finds out about the fic from twitter, to peter's absolute horror, and changes peter's contact name to "friendly neighborhood ao3 author". but the worst thing to happen is after an avengers battle where peter took a pretty big hit and ends up in med-bay. and during a press conference, when someone asks how spider-man is healing, tony just drops "spidey won't be down for too long. the star wars fic will be updated within the week, probably."
ao3 goes down for two days.
Oh man, oh man. I've been going through some ancient hard drives (New Years resolution) and found some of the oldest digital photos of myself. Enjoy what 20-25 years of age - with 15 of that being on HRT - does to a guy.
Age 23 vs 48, lmao. Back when I box dyed my hair a dark auburn. To be fair, I think all of us who lived it as young adults glowed up from the year 2000.
26 vs 48. Same coat, only it finally fits properly in the shoulders! I think I had just seen Matrix Reloaded and that was me playing around as my OC. 😅
26 vs 48. I'm still kind of scrawny at 20+ lbs heavier, but clothes fit so much better now.
Me at 28? Just starting to be able to afford the tweedy look. Man, I miss those shoes. I still have that coat, though no recent photos of it, so we'll close this out with one of my favorite pics of me from last year, age 48.
I finally understand why that argument was always making me angry
Yeah neopronouns arent a new fangled concept gen z came up with btw
i do not understand people who say "dont date your friends." who are you supposed to date then? do you just find someone and try to date them?? and you dont even know them???? alloromantics are perplexing man wtf is this
