This guy gets it. Anybody who really knows me knows that I’m obsessed with Jackie Chan, he’s my literal favorite person outside of my family and friends. People who’ve only seen him in American films, or who don’t watch martial arts films religiously might not know this, but Jackie Chan is a genius. Jackie Chan is a genius. The genre owes so much to him. This video makes a lot of the points I’ve ranted about many times in my life, it’s nice to see my opinions validated in a video essay though.

Don’t get me started on American action films. Not only is the way we visually direct action such garbage (because most of our actors aren’t doing their own stunts, so we have to quick cut and obscure so much to hide that) but we are so focused on making our hero look like a badass, or escalating the scale of spectacle, that we forget to add any tension or struggle. You have to make us feel something. That’s why watching Jackie Chan fight a single individual in a dining room is infinitely more intense than watching two Transformers fight each other the fate of a planet, because Jackie puts focus on the tension, the pain, the fatigue, the emotion, the character, while making it look good at the same time. Like I said, he’s a genius.
