A flying fish swims below the surface in the Gulf Stream late at night, offshore from Palm Beach, Florida, USA.

Moving its tail fin up to 70 times per second, a flying fish can reach an underwater speed of nearly 60 kilometers per hour. Angling itself upwards, it then breaks the surface while still propelling itself along by rapidly beating its tail underwater, before taking to the air and gliding—successfully escaping predators such as tuna, marlin and swordfish.

These are our ushers in front of the ‘Roosevelt freedoms awards wall of fame’ with the names of the esteemed laureates from the very beginning. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards began in 1982 and among the laureates are the King of Spain, the beloved Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Protocolbureau was founded on the occasion of the freedoms awards in 1996. Ever since we have been given the honour to assist the Roosevelt Foundation in the organisation of the prestigious award.

The Four Freedoms Awards in 1996 was the start of Protocolbureau and it still is one of the favourite events among our ushers. Working at the FFA is a unique experience for our young protocol officers. This is not only because of the unique working experience; ushers are responsible for welcoming and seating the guests and many dignitaries, among which our Royal Family and the decedents of President Roosevelt. It is also because our ushers are touched by the remarkable laureates and their impressive achievements. Our usher Kim Jongbloed was responsible for escorting the laureates at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards upon arrival in the Netherlands and yesterday during the awards ceremony. On instagram he wrote "I was lucky enough to meet Urmila Chaudhary. Extremely humbling experience." "Aged 6 this woman was sold by her Nepalese family to become a household slave. At age 18 she managed to escape. Today, at an age similar to mine, she will win a Four Freedoms award, for her efforts as a human rights activists in abolishing the system that enslaved her as a kid." The Four Freedoms Awards is a refreshing sound of compassion for human rights, values and dignity in a world that seems to go the opposite way. Or as the Canadian Ambassador in the Netherlands, Sabine Nolke put it on twitter: "Stubborn optimists; Truly inspiring human rights icons, every one." This is how our protocol training ended today. Sixteen professionals followed a training about protocol, high-level event management, etiquette, networking and personal presentation.

Our training in The Hague is in Dutch, the next training in English will take place in Brussels on 20, 21 and 22 June.

On 20, 21 and 22 June our participants follow a three-day training in Brussels given by the best European experts and also by one of our ushers. Ushers are the junior protocol officers of Protocolbureau at events like the World Press Photo Awards Ceremony, the King Willem I Awards and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards.

In June Kim Jongbloed will be the usher talking about his work for Protocolbureau. He will explain how Protocolbureau manages seating arrangements and is responsible for welcoming and escorting dignitaries.

This is a photo of the Three-day Masterclass in Protocol which took place in Brussels this week. Eight participants followed a training about the management of high-level events, visits and conferences given by the Portuguese Isabel Amaral, former Master of Ceremonies Gilbert Monod de Froideville, former Chief of Protocol of the European Parliament François Brunagel, William Hanson of The English Manner and Protocolbureau-usher Jeroen Koks. Bengt-Arne Hulleman of the International Criminal Court gave a guest lecture.

The training consists of lectures, excercises, business cases and a three-course etiquette dinner. The training includes all class material, a binder with hand-outs, a certificate of Protocolbureau and all catering.

Protocolbureau supports the organisation of high-level events and ceremonies and also organises four protocol trainings per year; two (in Dutch) in The Hague and two (in English) in Brussels.

Iedere usher krijgt een keer de kans om de officiele protocoltraining voor professionals bij te wonen. Joep Hoogerwerf en Nick Bosch deden dat afgelopen week in Brussel.

Deze protocoltraining, de zogeheten 'Three-day Masterclass in Protocol' is een samenwerking van het Protocolbureau met The English Manner uit London. Docenten van beide instituten verzorgen de lessen en trainingen over protocol, speechen, netwerken en evenmanagement.

Joep en Nick waren verantwoordelijk voor het goede verloop van de training en fungeerden als contactpersoon voor het hotel, de deelnemers en de docenten. Daarnaast volgden zij delen van de training.

Deze foto is gemaakt na afloop van het etiquettediner. Joep en Nick laten voormalig BBC nieuwslezer Diana Mather, één van de docenten, het Koninklijk Paleis in Brussel zien.

"Warm bad en super dag" schreef Maik de Boer op instagram over zijn bezoek aan het congres van de Kring van Kabinetsmedewerkers op donderdag 2 juni jongstleden. De meeste mensen kennen hem als de vrolijke noot op RTL 4, maar Maik geeft ook vaak workshops over persoonlijke presentatie, styling en het uiterlijk.

Zo ook op 2 juni tijdens het tweedaagse congres van de Kring van Kabinetsmedewerkers. De Kring is de grootste vereniging van protocolmedewerkers in Nederland en organiseert tweemaal per jaar een educatieve bijeenkomst voor haar leden, ditmaal met de docenten van het Protocolbureau.

2 juni begon met een plenair deel: protocolgoeroe Henrik de Groot interviewde Maik de Boer, protocolchef Bud Rellum en regisseuse Rebecca van Leeuwen. Aansluitend verzorgden de drie een aantal workshops. Die van Bud ging over het Staatsbezoek van onze Koning en Koningin aan Frankrijk en die van Rebecca over persoonlijke presentatie en non-verbale communicatie.

Twintig jaar geleden was de Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards aanleiding voor de oprichting van het Protocolbureau. De awards-ceremonie in de Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg was in 1996 onze eerste opdracht. De Four Freedoms Awards medal werd toen uitgereikt aan Z.M. de Koning van Spanje. Om ons op deze bijzondere opdracht goed voor te bereiden gaf de toenmalige Ceremoniemeester van H.M. de Koningin, Gilbert Monod de Froideville, ons een lezing over protocol.

Donderdag 21 april jl. waren zestien ushers samen met de medewerkers van de provincie Zeeland verantwoordelijk voor het ontvangen, registreren en placeren van ruim 700 genodigden waaronder de Koninklijke Familie en veel andere hoogwaardigheidsbekleders. De altijd indrukwekkende en bijzondere uitreiking in Middelburg stond dit jaar onder leiding van één van de ushers van het eerste uur, Sebastian Groothuis.

Gisteren eindigde voor het Protocolbureau een week die in het teken stond van de vrede en recht met de uitreiking van de 59ste World Press Photo Awards in het Muziekgebouw aan het IJ. De winnaars van World Press Photo werden uit 82,951 foto's gemaakt door 5,775 fotografen uit 128 landen geselecteerd. Er werden prijzen uitgereikt in verschillende categorieën zoals 'Daily Life, Nature & Sports'. Dé World Press Photo, de hoofdprijs, ging naar de Australiër Warren Richardson voor zijn foto 'Hope for a new life' over de Europese vluchtelingencrises. Het protocol-team tijdens de uitreiking van de Zakenvrouw van het Jaar 2016, de zogeheten Prix Veuve Clicquot, aan Vivienne van Eijkelenborg van Difrax en in aanwezigheid van H.M. de Koningin. De Koningin was aanwezig ter gelegenheid van de verkiezing van de 35e Zakenvrouw in Nederland.

Deze week startte de 6daagse postgraduate opleiding 'Strategisch Relatiemanagement'. De opleiding is een initiatief van het Institute of Strategic Relationship Management (ISRM), de Hotelschool The Hague en het Protocolbureau en wordt gevolgd door 14 professionals uit de overheid en het bedrijfsleven.

"In onze hectische maatschappij is persoonlijke aandacht schaars. Het zo efficient mogelijk besteden van deze schaarste behoeft structurering: dat is strategisch relatiemanagment." - Jean Paul Wijers, directeur ISRM De opleiding beoogt professionalisering van het relatiemanagement en bestaat uit 5 modules en een onderzoek. Module 1 en 2 belichten de strategische aspecten van het relatiemanagement: het formuleren van een visie en het ontwikkelen van een netwerkstrategie. Module 3 richt zich op het stakeholder management en de interne verantwoordelijkheid voor het relatiemanagement. Module 4 gaat over de toolkit die een relatiemanager zou moeten bezitten om diegenen te ondersteunen die als gastheer/-vrouw optreden. En module 5 leert de deelnemers om effectieve en meetbare netwerkbijeenkomsten te organiseren.

De opleiding wordt gegeven door Monica Bakker, Robert Collignon (Deloitte), Gerty Smit (Hotelschool The Hague), Mark Verheul (gemeente Den Haag) en Jean Paul Wijers. Daarnaast verzorgen tal van professionals uit het werkveld een gastles.

Most of the times it is better to say 'How do you do' in stead of 'Nice to meet you' - so said William Hanson of The English Manner tonight at a three-course etiquette dinner for the students of the minor 'Strategic Relationship Management'.

The etiquette dinner is meant to improve the networking skills of the students and is part of the 12 EC minor 'Strategic Relationship Management', a programma that has been developped by the Hotelschool The Hague university in cooperation with the Institute of Strategic Relationship Management and the Protocolbureau. At this minor students learn to oversee the networking process of an organisation and increase the effectiveness of the networking meetings.

William Hanson is the UK’s leading etiquette and Royal protocol expert. The Financial Times described him as 'special forces in the world of politeness, he has a staggering ability to make one feel the centre of attention and utterly inadequate at the same time'. William Hanson is the author of the irreverent and indispensible manual of modern-day social climbing, The Bluffer’s Guide to Etiquette, which was released to high praise in January 2014 and he is the leading expert and consultant in etiquette for BBC & Sky News.

Vanavond kreeg Kim Jongbloed de hoogste eer. Aan hem is tijdens een feestelijk diner in Op Hodenpijl de uitzonderlijke eretitel 'Senior Partner' verleend. Hij kreeg die titel vanwege zijn talent, werkervaring en enthousiasme. Kim is volgens veel opdrachtgevers een charmante gastheer met kennis van zaken.

Studenten beginnen bij het Protocolbureau als (Junior Partner-)host en krijgen na het opdoen van praktijkervaring en theoretische kennis de titel (Junior Partner-)usher. Alleen meest talentvolle ushers worden Senior Partner. Het Protocolbureau zet de studenten als protocol-medewerker, host of junior-event manager in op officiële bijeenkomsten, internationale congressen en prijsuitreikingen. Daarnaast volgen de studenten een trainingsprogramma over protocol, gastvrijheid en cultuurverschillen. Twee keer per jaar wordt de voortgang besproken tijdens de zogeheten functioneringsgesprekken, dan wordt ook besloten over eventuele promotie.

Zo kregen Koen van Ewijk, Thom Timans en Jeroen Wolfs tijdens de laatste gesprekken de titel usher, wat ook vanavond werd gevierd. Ook aanwezig vanavond waren de 10 nieuwe hosts die enkele weken geleden werden geselecteerd uit ruim 25 kandidaten.

Donderdag 18 en vrijdag 19 februari volgen 12 protocolmedewerkers een training bij het Protocolbureau. Deze training, die op de Hotelschool The Hague in Amsterdam plaatsvindt, is een vervolg op de basisprotocoltraining 'Tweedaagse Protocoltraining'. De training is bedoeld om de kennis te verdiepen en de vaardigheden te ontwikkelen.

De deelnemers krijgen diverse business cases voorgelegd, bovendien zijn zij verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie van een diner voor 35 personen. Daarnaast volgen zij een les over gedrag door Anne-Maartje Oud (Behaviour Company) en over cultuurverschillen door Anne Smulders (Hotelschool The Hague).
