Tips for GMAT success in 21 days....
This is a little off the usual topic, but I recently studied to sit my GMAT exam to go to Business school. I figured an MBA on top of the music experience is a good move for the career!
Anyway, I came across some great links on the material I needed to revise and they helped. Here are my tips and suggestions.
My Schedule:
Week 1 - Slowly revise basics using Kaplan pocket reference.
Week 2 - Do questions including a “slow” diagnostic test to see the challenge
Week 3 - Start sitting timed exams every day or two and solving unsolved questions until understanding why COMPLETELY!
MY TIPS:
In my final week I used the 2 FREE GMAT.com tests and the Kaplan free test. I took one GMAT one day, another the following day, then took 2 days to review what was weak before sitting the Kaplan test online.
This method saw my GMAT score rise each test and the 600+ score I got on my actual GMAT was the same I got on the final Kaplan practice test for what its worth!
Commit certain things to memory
Triangle ratios (Pythagorean Triplets) starting at 3-4-5 up to 9-40-41
1->12 times tables
Squares up to 20x20 (and even 25x25)
Pythagorean Triplets - Amazing trick
How to treat ‘powers’ and ‘roots’ (VERY IMPORTANT)
To check which multiplication tables were weak, I wrote out a grid of my tables and circled any that I had trouble with and discovered my 9 and 12 times tables were a little rusty, so for 2 weeks I randomly challenged myself to remember them until they were as fluid as the rest.
The books I worked with were
GMAT Review
Kaplan GMAT 800
Kaplan GMAT pocket reference
Kaplan GMAT 2016 Strategies, Practice, and Review
The Kaplan book with “Strategies and Review” was fantastic to help get me up to speed and when I was through with it, the GMAT Review was a great second read to refresh what I had been doing and to give some new perspectives.

The Erry Jig (feat. YOPs Youth Orchestra) by Ciaran Hope, Classical music from Los Angeles, CA on ReverbNation
Please give this lovely irish air a listen. #TheErryJig is performed by the Dublin based YOPs Youth Orchestra and has risen to #29 on the Reverbnation classical charts! Any shares and plays would help keep it moving up the charts and that would be amazing for all the teenagers who played on the recording! Ciaran
Community member Steven Hintz has been searching for a cool Vinyl emulation plug-in. He asked "Anyone know of any VST or AAX vinyl emulation plugins that still exist or aren't $500". Last week we pointed Steven at iZotope's Vinyl but with the proviso that it had been discontinued. Well not anymore as we have great news. iZotope have released Vinyl as a 64bit plug-in including the AAX Native format for Pro Tools 11 and above.
Now this is a COOL plugin. If you haven’t used it, or downloaded it.... you need to do both TODAY! I love how it can add vintage character to a digital track.

Somewhere between James Bond and a galaxy far far away, there are other films in release. Don’t overlook The Letters, based on the lengthy correspondence between Mother Teresa and her spiritu…
“Beautifully filmed, with very effective understated music “
(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvIzgw9sfu0) Another memory for opening weekend - Recording #TheLettersMovie score in Skopje with the Macedonian Radio Symphony Orchestra. If you haven't made it to the cinema yet, get yourself to the cinema!
"A biopic about Mother Teresa could have easily been a self-important slog, yet William Riead's "The Letters" proves a stirring and absorbing if not quite definitive drama." - The LA Times
I don't often blog off topic, but for once, there will be a few! The Letters, for which I gave a year of my life writing the score, opened on Dec. 4th.
You would be doing me the greatest of favors if you shared this with your friends or did anything you could to help me raise awareness and get people out to see it!
Fixing the "Pro Tools could not initialize the current playback device..." error in Pro Tools 9
PROBLEM:
“Pro Tools could not initialize the current playback device. Please make sure that the device has been configured correctly.“
I’ve seen the above error a lot when launching PT9 WITHOUT an mbox connected, specifically after shutting down previously while connected to an mbox.
CAUSE:
This error is most likely due to the ‘Current Engine’ setting in the Pro Tools Playback Engine still seeking the mbox.
SOLUTION:
Here is how you can resolve the issue during launch by picking a different Playback Engine:
Launch Pro Tools 9
When the splash screen appears on your screen, hold down the "n" key on your keyboard to open the PT Playback Engine dialog
Select the 'Current Engine' drop-down menu
Pick a different Engine (such as Pro Tools Aggregate I/O)
Click ‘OK’
This should allow Pro Tools to launch. It does for me!!!!
Happy Days!
