BEAUTY was to be expected of a performer; To call her beautiful was to tell her she was adequate. In her lifetime she had been described as ethereal and insufferable and everything in between and learned to take it all without care, to breathe a curt ‘thank you,’ or turn away and bite her tongue where appropriate. The Nohrian population’s opinion of her was not kept secret ( not in the slightest ) and the vitriol spewed from betwixt envious sneers did indeed inflict burns upon her in her youth but in time her skin thickened, her heart building walls of concrete.
( ——- Why is it, then, that it takes a lonesome mage not a spell or incantation but only a subdued smile to crack the walls as if they were made of glass, allow amaryllis to grow through the fractures and bloom betwixt her lungs when he offers sweet words such as these / looks at her as though she were the most precious thing in the world? Why is it that he need only look in to her eyes to pull her apart at the seams —- )
` The MOON is beautiful and yet we choose to sleep for most if it’s life each night, do we not ? ` Her voice is soft and lilting when she finally responds. Fingers stall in their mindless fiddling with the wrinkles in the cotton sheets to travel up to his temple, weightless warmth traces the contours of his face ( fingertips sparked with love, love, love ) before her palm rests on the curve of his cheek, thumb lovingly running over the skin. ` … Perhaps it is because we trust that it will remain in the sky for the entire night, that even when we lose sight of it, it continues to watch over us and will always return with the next sunset. `
The hand then glides to the back of his head and gently pulls him forward to press their foreheads together. Slender fingers tenderly sift through his hair and she breathes him in, sleep-tugged eyes holding his own in silence. The FACT was that this prison of a castle / these blood-stained stone streets / this wretched kingdom held no place for her — it was only within his arms that she felt for the first time within these cold walls that she had a home.
` —— Can you trust me to still be holding you in my arms in the morning, then? You’ve given up enough sleep these past few days … close your eyes, love. ` A kiss to each of his fingertips, then to his knuckles. ( what despair have these hands felt? what violence have they owned? ) Peach blossom lips then mark a tender path from the corner of his lips to his cheek, to his temple, to his forehead and back to his lips once more. Here with only air and him within her lungs it feels as though the first seven years of her life were naught but some garish nightmare crafted by Morpheus’ cruel hand. With him, only him, she can forget what it was to be a burden.
( With him, hell feels kind. )
