A ProVari Mini Review

Ok, by now there must have been more than thousand reviews of the ProVari Mini out there and I have to add that I have found a lot of them very helpful. But I want to share my opinion although the topic and subject are a bit overexploited and probably I don’t have anything new to say.

So, this morning I received the Spartan looking package containing my ProVari Mini and I have already fallen in love with it. With the ProVari Mini you could forget all the problems of carrying around your e-cig while being out and having to find a special place for it. Now you can carry it in your pocket without any problems or any suspicious looks from law enforcement officers, it fights right in. The Mini can deliver up to six volts and provide enough vapor and flavor to satisfy even the fussiest of vapers.

Upon opening the box I found it a bit hard to believe that the small, light and elegant e-cig inside would be soon delivering 6 volts worth of vapor. The basic design follows the lines established by the ProVari, but the differences in weight and size are to say the least quite easy to spot.

I really liked the texture covering the side of the casing which is slightly rougher that the one on the ProVari. I had read in other reviews about it, but the only way to get a real feel is to have a ProVari Mini in your hand and actually feel it.

The overall impression, the ProVari Mini makes from the moment you pick it up is really great. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of ProVape is really palatable whenever you throw a peek at their creation. Nothing is out of place and all the parts fit together making the unit an object of style. Honestly this is probably the nicest looking e-cig I have ever seen.

Here comes some bad news for people who are not already a ProVari owners: you  will have to by a battery charger and at least two batteries to be able to enjoy your Mini. These items will rise the total cost of the unit, but it is an expenditure which is worthwhile.

And now in conclusion I will have to say that if you have the money to spare this is the product to buy. The people at ProVape have outdone themselves with the ProVari Mini. It is the best electronic cigarette I have ever tried and I can attest to its quality by the fact that it is already my favorite unit and I am glued to it, not the other way around. I will also add that everything you’ve heard about ProVari is true – they are the best.

Leaving smoking behind

One of the things that are universally true is that you can’t outrun your problems, unless of course your problems consist of a pack of dogs chasing you in the park and even then is really hard. There are however people who manage through straight of will and stubbornness to bury their head in the sand like ostriches and completely ignore any problem they happen to collide with to the point of even denying that a problem exists.

After saying all that comes my turn to make a confession about me. I was one of these people. I hope that I have managed to put that behind me now, so I am going to share a small part of my story.

What is the problem I am talking about? Well if I have to be blunt the right question was: "What problems I didn't have?". But my main problems were connected with drinking and smoking. Both of which I knew pretty damn well since college.

In college for the first time of my life I had an incredible amount of independence. No family or family friends from the small town I was raised in to look over my back. Probably the real shocker is that I didn’t flunk college, despite being always on the edge of failing it. There are whole periods from my college days that are still covered in haze and not the haze of time mind you.

After graduating I continued with my fast pace of life. I was usually going through 1 pack a day and at least 2 or 3 glasses of whiskey and several beers if it was a Friday or a Saturday even more. And a few years back it finally started to catch up with me. If I didn't have a glass of any alcohol around lunchtime my hands were shaky, it was even worse if I hadn't had a smoke for more than 2 hours. I was constantly tired and I was in the worst shape of my life.

The real and I hope final blow to that lifestyle happened 1 year ago when I had a heart attack while I was driving. It was an eye opener. After I got out of the hospital I threw all my liquor away and after some difficulties I switched from smoking to vaping. Exchanging the normal cigarette with an e-cigarette wasn't that big of a step but it seems to be working. I also started working out, jogging and eating healthy.

And I am glad to say that it is paying off. I no longer look like a walking corpse and I am not as depressed as I used to be.

So the initiative is always in your own hands. Whether or not you decide to act on them is your choice.

New Ways – New Habits

Sometimes, a time comes in your life in which you have to choose whether to stop doing something you love, but which is ultimately killing you or you should continue doing it anyway. You know when you are about to make such a decision. The whole moment turns into a center point of you essence and you know that you MUST decide. At least this is how I felt it when my doctor said that I should give up smoking.

I used to be a passionate smoker. My hobbies consisted of collecting ashtrays, lighters and different exotic cigarette brands from all over the world. I really loved smoking. The whole deal, yes it made me feel bad, it made me unable to take a flight of stairs without coughing but it was one of my favorite things. Мost people who are hooked on cigarettes feel smoking as a necessity I on the other hand felt in love it.

Yeah, I was that guy. As you may have guessed by know it all came to an abrupt end under the form of a minor heart attack. It didn’t seem that minor to me but that is beside the point. In the hospital the doctor said cheerfully that he is surprised that I haven’t had a major stroke or heart attack years ago. He said it was a simple matter of time having in mind my lifestyle. And boy did that make me think!

I decided that it was about time for a change. Although it was really, difficult for me I had to give up smoking and all of my favorite foods. The hardest part was ignoring the feeling that I am supposed to have a cigarette butt in my mouth. It wasn’t so surprising that my first attempts to stop smoking were a minor fiasco. I simply couldn’t let go. I found the answer to my prayers under the form of an electronic cigarette. Although I had heard about them I had never taken them seriously, until now that is.

Only 2 days after I bought my first starter kit I was completely hooked. It wasn’t that different from cigarettes if you don’t take in mind the smoke, the ash and the loss of taste which you have while you are smoking. Probably the best thing about e-cigs is that they allow you to gradually reduce the amount of nicotine received and in the end to get rid of it completely. So I can attest that it really worked out for me well. And I hope that soon I will find new, healthier hobbies.

5 Ways to Give Up Smoking

Giving Up Smoking After a Lifetime of It

When I got relatively older and graduated from college it was brought to my attention how much was I actually smoking. I didn’t even realize it, until one day my girlfriend at the time complained how everything around me smelled like cigarette smoke and how unhealthy was this for me.

The whole thing with the smoking didn’t stop her from saying “yes” to my proposal so I suppose I must have done something right. After years of building a career I had come to a point where I was ravaging trough a pack a day, sometimes even two. My health was obviously affected by this lifestyle. I had the smoker’s cough and couldn’t run 200 yards to save my life. I was in fact slowly dying away.

Probably one of the reasons why I was such an avid smoker was my upbringing. My family consisted only from smokers. Going through 2 packs a day was something normal for my father, in fact he would often start the third one before going to bed. Growing up in this kind of environment is probably why I lighted my first cigarette in our back yard when I was in grade school. Later in college although I didn’t noticed it I was bellowing smoke like an industrial factory, it didn’t bother me at the time it was something of the norm for me.

Strangely as it may be the great breakthrough for me came after I was in a traffic accident. It wasn’t anything serious, but afterwards I had to go to a doctor for a routine checkup. I hadn’t been to a doctor for more than 10 years and I felt perfectly healthy so you could imagine my surprise when my doctor told me that if I didn’t stop smoking soon I was looking towards several years in hospital or an early grave.

It is one thing to know something is bad for you, but it is completely different to hear it from someone who has spent the last 20 years looking from a professional point of view at the ill effects of smoking. So I tried to give up smoking. At first I tried with nicotine patches, different systems, I even started going to yoga! But the urge was too strong and by the end of the day I would always have a cigarette in my mouth.

My salvation, as always, was pointed to me by my wife. If smoke was the one thing that I was to avoid, then electronic smokeless cigarettes was the thing for me. By the end of the day she mentioned that I was the proud owner of a black electronic cigarette and boy was I happy. Now I could carry on with my life normally, and not the least the constant nagging from my wife ended abruptly. And it seems that she is happy with my new life choice too.

Hometown Insomnia

It is 5:36 am in the morning, the sunrise is still just a faint glimmer a bit over the ocean on the horizon, but its arrival is imminent. I can hear the not so distant sound of the heaving waves. My home, the house where I grew up is not more than 600 feet away from the beach. Since I have been little I have always associated the sound of the waves with home and safety. If I was restless this sound more than any other thing would calm me down, relieve my anxiety and put me to a good sound sleep. But now for no apparent reason the soothing choir of the many waves trying to take away the sand back from the beach didn’t seem to have any effect on me.

After spending what seemed like years and were actually hours in my bed tossing from one side to another I had given up. So now I was waiting the coming dawn, while taking long and deep pools from my electronic cigarette, and taking sips from my big glass of milk. I was using a non-nicotine liquid tasting like chocolate cookies, something else that was kind of suppose to put me to sleep but the effect once again was nil.

While I was doing all of the above I was watching my hometown from the window. It was a small seaside touristy town. I call it touristy because the days when it attracted scores of tourists eager to spend their money were long gone. Now it was just one sleepy family oriented resort town.

Not the best possible or most famous place to have your summer vacation, but definitely not the worse. Tourism even as meager as it was is the most lucrative thing to do around here and the biggest provider of jobs. There were of course some fishing boats and the businesses associated with fishing providing some extra jobs but not nearly enough. This is why most young people were leaving the community, including me.

After college I was spending only my summer leave (whenever I got one) and the holidays here with my family. I still loved the place but its remoteness and smallness and the fact that everyone knew everyone was influencing me in a negative way.

Probably that was the reason that I was still awake. I had taken an extra large dose of “small hometown” and my system was full. Or it was something else? I am not sure at all; right now the only thing that is on my mind is the spectacular sunrise. The great sphere was rising from its cradle in the ocean, only to set some hours later to the west and to repeat the cycle again on the next day.

Pets and a Ferrety situation

Having a pet, as I am sure many people can tell you is a full time commitment and it is not as easy as it seems. Well there maybe are some exceptions of the rule. I don’t see the attraction in having a fish tank with some carefully chosen inhabitants so that they don’t eat each other, I mean what could you do with your aquatic pets other from feeding them and watching them? Another not so high maintenance pet to have is ants in an ant farm, technically then you could have thousands of pets, but again the only thing you could do with them is watch them and feed them and sometimes in case that they pull out a great escape you can have the great experience on calling the exterminators for your former pets that are now roaming free in your home.

No, what I mean as a pet includes all the varieties of mammals, reptiles and birds with which you could engage in an actual activity. Cats and dogs are the first thing that comes to mind when you mention the word “pets”, after some thought parrots are also included although there is a large variety of animals kept as pets.

Having a dog is a wonderful thing, they are joyful (well most of them, there is always the odd apple), loyal, and happy to play. The man’s best friend is a wonderful addition to any family or household of one. You will have to walk it but it is still worth it. Cats are gracious, can be great fun to play with and as sure as hell consider you to be their pet not the other way around and they have the interesting habit of showing of their pray to their owners.

And how about me, what is my pet? My pet is a ferret. A charming little thief he is, not surprising when you take in mind that the name "ferret" is derived from the Latin furittus, meaning literally "little thief". There was this one in time when I first took it home when I was looking for my car keys, my electronic cigarette and half of my girfriend’s jewlery only to see him with a nailclipper in his mouth and followed him to his cache. Since then random sweeps throught the hidden places of the house are something regular for theft prevention and restoring some stollen goodies to their rightful owners. Other from that a ferret is a ferret, adoarable, brave and funny to have around you.

Worst bus trip ever

Long distance traveling can be one of the toughest things in the world. Oh, pardon… correction, long distance traveling by bus can be one of the toughest things in the world. I personally do not envy anyone who has to undertake the arduous task of taking the distance from point A to point B. Cramped spaces, annoying little children, basically the same things you get in a plane but for a longer periods and minus the pretty flight attendants and food. Overall bus travel can be compared with hell on wheels.

Now, after this interlude I can tell you my story. So it happened that in the middle of the night I was commandeered to go on a business trip. It was during one of the holiday periods gateway and since I was the only unmarried guy in the firm I was selected for the trip from NYC to one specific location out state. After several hours in which I found that there were no plane tickets left, to anywhere around the area I had to go to, nor train, nor available cars for rent, nor anyone with a car willing to lend it to me, my last option was getting to my destination with a bus (I had to change 3 buses but in the end I was going to get there).

Being one of the last to buy a ticket for the bus, I was in the back, between a mother and her child and an old man with a cane. And so it began. More than 30 hours of sitting between strangers, enduring the all the annoying stories you could imagine, the stuffy air and last but not the least, enduring without cigarettes.

Somewhere after the 3rd- 5 minute stop I ran out of smokes. And there was not a single pack of cigarettes near the bus stops. All have been sold or the little shops were closed because of the holiday. 10 hours after my last cigarette I was on the verge of hysterics, the nerves were getting to me so on one of the stops I went into the little shop with the hope of finding any form of tobacco and nicotine. Instead I found an Electronic Cigarette Starter Kit. A completely new contraption, from my point of view, it was fascinating and supposedly not as harmful as real cigarettes.

And after 30 and something hours of sitting in the bus I walked away from it happy, with a desperate need of a shower and with an electronic cigarette tucked away in my pocket. In retrospect it was a really important journey for me in more than one way, after it I stopped smoking, I earned my promotion, I met my girlfriend and it gave me the resolve never ever to go on a bus as a passenger.

You could never teach a lazy dog a new trick but it could drink beer

Often people claim that pets take the characteristics of their masters, or that we simply prefer pets that are more like us. Probably there is no way this could be more wrong as it comes to my dog’s appearance and mine. I am tall and lanky, with black hair and very thin while my dog is relatively small, fat, and orange, from breed that is yet to be specified. As I said, we couldn’t be more different when it comes to appearance but we are very similar when it comes to character.

The only difference comes with the fact that my dog is as lazy as doggishly possible. He doesn’t like walks, he doesn’t run, and his most favorite thing is to lay on the couch with sprawled legs and watch TV, while releasing noxious gases on irregular intervals. While on the other hand I am restless if I don’t have something to do, it may be something simple: carving a wooden figure, or peeling potatoes, but I have to have some work on my hands no to be on my toes all the time. Like me Bob (as is his name) likes beer. He found beer when he was a puppy, as the direct result of a practical joke of one of my friends, and since he found it he has never stop to love the stuff. At a point he even found out how to open the fridge,  take a can, pierce it with his teeth and drink from the resulting pool. I managed to get a handle on that but he still enjoys his beer.

Another point in which we are very similar is the fact that we both love electronic cigarettes. I, to use them for vaping and he to lick them all over and use them as a chew toy.  I found that out the hard way, when one night I returned and I found him laying on the couch and looking at me with innocence as he continued to gnaw at my very expensive American made electronic cigarette. After that I had to stop his beer for 1 month as punishment and keep my ecig on high places when I was not at home.

Actually I love my lazy, smelly dog, he can be really fun and there is no question that he is really loyal. He protects the TV remote from anyone but me, and he doesn’t allow anyone to take beer from the fridge but me, what more could you ask from a dog?

The Quest for Inspiration and How I Walked The Way

People are different and this is one of the beauties of it all. Variety makes life so interesting and unpredictable. For example some people are easily capable to “shift the gears” of their life, to alternate the paste of their lifestyle trough the different events in it.

And some, like me, have only two modes: max speed and full stop. I’ve always been like that, since I as long as I could remember. I just need something to keep my interest long enough to get me excited and to put me back on the track of creativity.

My occasional apathy has been a constant companion of mine whenever I was in an inspirational “dry spell”. This has never been such an issue when I was at school or in college, I would simply shrug it off. I would have a drop in my grades, but no one but the teachers would notice it and there was almost never a fuss about it. Now… things are different.

I work as a graphic designer in a fairly well known advertising company. You could imagine the stress, the competition, the hardship and sleepless nights, and of course the Challenge. Yes, Challenge with a capital ‘C’. The creative demands and dilemmas I had to meet on a daily basis was the impeccable drive burning inside me. This inner momentum was the one thing that made me wake up every morning and spend the next 14 to 15 hours doing my job with joy and take pride in my craftsmanship.

This is why it pains me even more to say that: this river has gone dry. I don’t know when or how. I simply know that I had to find a way to remedy myself and I had to do it fast. I took several days off with the idea to start scribbling on my notebook and to see how it goes.

I decided to take one concept and to see where it will take me. So I chose one of my most valuable possessions, my 100% American made electronic cigarette, (as it package proudly declared) and I spent half an hour drawing it. And from there on, I don’t know how, but my ideas somehow reached as far as the fall of the Inca Empire, the Roman conquest of Britain, what would happen if Star Trek met Star Wars in a bar and so on. After several weeks I had enough artwork to serve as the basis of a future exhibition and my drive was finally restored.

I don’t even know why I am sharing this. I have never been too good with words, but I hope what I had to say may have helped restore some of your inspiration.

How I am building my personal paradise

One of my most favorite things in the whole world was sitting in a warm air-conditioned room, reading a book, smoking a cigar and taking small gulps from a cup of tea with cognac, while in the same time a snow storm and blistering cold are arguing for the title of “Lord of the Night” outside. I am painting a really idyllic picture, am I not? 

Of course there are some obvious drawbacks. You could do this only in the winter. Cigars are expensive, with extensive use they tend to die your teeth yellow, all the furniture and you end up reeking of tobacco smoke and there is no way to remove the minor smog cloud from the room when outside is cold enough to make even a Polar bear weep for a blanket.  And we shouldn’t forget the matter with the book. Not any piece of literature will do. It must be good enough to make you turn the pages not fall asleep under the influence of the liquor.

By now you probably think I am some kind of a hipster snob. That I am exactly like one of the people who annoy the living hell out of you. Like the ones with their artificial sophistication when lining at the corner coffee shop, pompous and presumptuous conversations on the street, watching at people as if they are not worth the bother, you know the type. Well, I am not.

I have a job that maybe pays the bills but it is nerve wrecking and it is taking its toll on my health. My family is in a conspiracy to drive me mad and all the problems are shuffled towards me although I am the middle son. My girlfriend is waging a successful campaign of emotional racketeering and I can’t seem to find a stop of it. And all this has been going for a hell of a long time.   

So I hope you could understand my plight. I need something to hold on to. It doesn’t matter it is only a small Utopia, because it is my Utopia: a moment frozen in its timelessness and relative perfection.  

In the beginning I said it was one of my favorite things. It was because since about 3 months ago my fantasy has been changed. I have replaced the cigar with an ecig. An e cigarette: no more yellow teeth for me or reeking clouds of vile smoke. Switching to ecig was a smooth transition that no one but me noticed.   

Now if only the weather would comply…Oh well, I guess I could wait for the winter

Smoking Through the Ages

 Smoking, practiced in one form or another has been part of many human cultures since ancient times. Tobacco and various other hallucinogenic drugs were being used in the Americas in shamanistic and religious rituals as early as 5000 BC. Many ancient civilizations like the Babylonians, the Romans, the Chinese and the Indians, burnt incense as part of religious rituals and practices. Later with the emergence of Christianity the Catholic and the Orthodox churches continued using incense. In Classical Greece the smoke of various herbs was used for healing practices and the Oracle of Delphi made prophecies while being intoxicated by inhaling natural gases emitted from a bore hole.

 Originally one of the plants that were predominantly used for smoking throughout Eurasia was cannabis. Evidence of inhalation of cannabis smoke was found in a burial site from 3000 BC in Romania. This was indicated by charred cannabis seeds and a ritual brazier. Cannabis leafs have been found in the tomb of shaman in China which was dated to roughly the same time period.   

 For a time with the coming of the dark ages this culture subsided, at least in Europe. But with the discovery of the New World and the contact with tobacco smoking become more common in its recreational and social use.

 The English and the Dutch were trading mainly with Northern America. Because North American tribes used pipes for smoking the practice was adopted by the two European powers and from them spread to Northern Europe. The Spaniards and the Portuguese from the other hand had more contact with the Central and South American cultures, where the predominant way of smoking was by the means of cigarettes. As result cigarette smoking gained huge popularity in southern Europe and the Islamic World.

 It wasn’t until 1881 when the craftsman James Bonsack patented a machine to partially automate the manufacturing of cigarettes, that they really became the major way of smoking tobacco in the World.

  But soon after the turn of the century there were various medical studies that connected smoking with lung cancer. With the pressure rising and more and more conclusive results in medical  studies pointing to the health risks connected with smoking cigarettes, a new outlet for a safer way of smoking was created: water vapor cigarettes. Considered healthier and less hazardous for human health many people have turned to them and there is a constantly growing number of people who buy electronic cigarettes.

Today Tobacco is one of the most important cash crops in the world. It is cultivated virtually on every continent except Antarctica and the kilns in which it is cured dominate many rural landscapes. Tobacco and its qualities have been known to the earliest South American civilizations at least from 5000-3000 BC. Smoking probably has its origins from religious ceremonies in which shamans would use tobacco as incense-burning and inhale the smokes.  Later on it was adopted for pleasure and a social tool and in some cases for currency.

The first Europeans to smoke were the conquistadors; they were the ones to introduce tobacco to the Old World. The French ambassador to Lisbon, Jean Nicot (from whose name the word nicotine is derived) sent some samples of tobacco to Paris in 1560, from there it was introduced in England. And with the Age of Exploration tobacco seeds were being planted in Africa, India, China and even Japan.

Soon after tobacco appeared in the daily life of people it came under frequent criticism. There were smoking bans in the Ottoman Empire and China, although they were futile. James I of England tried to curb smoking by introducing a 4000% tax increase on tobacco in 1604, but that measure proved to be a failure. The Patriarch of Moscow in 1634 and the Pope in 1642 condemned smoking and even introduced punishments for smokers but despite the many efforts the restrictions and bans were universally ignored.   

In the beginning of the 20th century lung cancer was connected with smoking by German scientists.  In the 1954 a British study confirmed the suggestion. Despite that it wasn’t until 1998 that health authorities took the results of all the studies seriously. Since then certain types of tobacco advertisement were restricted or outright banned. Moreover the number of smokers in the US and Western Europe has declined significantly.

Because of the health hazards many people are turning towards new ways of smoking which are considered healthier. Water vapor cigarettes known also as electronic smokeless cigarettes are being taken as a substitute to normal cigarettes. The original concept was created in 1963 by Herbert A. Gilbert, but due to the limitations of the technology at the time and the fact that tobacco smoking was not considered harmful it wasn’t until the year 2007 when the first international patent for manufacturing of electronic cigarettes was granted.  Since then many people forgo smoking normal cigar and buy electronic cigarettes.
