     One brow rose at about the same moment that the other stopped speaking before his gaze drops as if he somehow forgot what he might be wearing. Looking back to her, his head cocked to one side. “I can’t imagine why.” Well, he could, but no one ever said he was the best at being honest and forthright. “I think I’m doing just fine. Besides - I don’t think our tastes would match.”

     It isn’t all that often that Fly finds himself in search of quiet, of all things. Well. Relative quiet. There’s hardly any quiet to be gained when hanging around a beach, regardless of the lack of human presence or not. The waves, not far off, gave him enough white noise to fill the gap.      Granted, he didn’t venture too terribly close - he’d taken to perching on a small overhang of sorts, a grassy patch that leads down into the sand without him having to sit down in it. Of course, it would be pretty much impossible to avoid any sand getting on him with even the slightest breeze blowing through the area. Oh well. Win some, lose some. No place is perfect.      Finding a remote area like this one wasn’t all too hard to do and it afforded him a decent place to mull over thoughts, or just generally separate himself from the mortal gaze, maybe both. That and the ever-shifting and flowing movement of the water gave his eyes something to idly follow.       He wasn’t really expecting to see anything in the water, be it creature or vessel, but he only blinked when he spotted something a little further out in the waves. Couldn’t be too surprised to see something ( shark? dolphin? ) if there’s nothing out there to scare off the sea life.

Were cats drawn to the ones why disliked them? Yes. Was Bast the same? No. She wanted to be adored, worshipped. Every cat receiving a kiss on their nose, a brush of their fur, care and attention was linked to her. As was every kitten drowned, every stray starved and every unwanted beaten. The line was thin but she had always been great at balancing

Having been tilted to the right, she sat up straight instead, as sharp as one of her statues. Wise eyes watched the god, and it took her a few seconds to answer. “Will good morals be the death of you?” she asked finally, considering humans going against their selfishness and greed to please an outer force. A force like her, had she ever demanded kindness from them before now. “I’m sure you can lead them astray.”

     Watching her movement, Fly remained as he was for the time being before raising his free hand so that he can lean his elbow on one knee and prop his chin up with that hand.       Her question was one that had occurred to him to think on before now, of course, and with it brought up now, he paused in his petting for a moment. Each time, his mind comes to the same conclusion. “Perhaps.” It is possible, also, that he may one day simply end up killed, but the same could be said of many. “I might be concerned if I ever fathomed that happening. I do not think I need to contribute to make sure of it.” Which is not the same as saying that he wouldn’t.      “Keep asking me about the possibility of my death and I’ll start assuming you’re concerned.” Turning, going to slide off the working side of the counter, he moved off for the briefest moment to acquire a shot glass which he would pour a bit of milk in. Afterwards, he simply returned to that corner of the counter so that he could place said item just inside the cat’s box. If either of his nearby employees thought it odd, they certainly didn’t show it. “Unless maybe you’ve heard about something that I haven’t and that’s what sparks your attention.” Which is entirely possible, given her association with cats and how common they are. It is also possible that he’s bribing her for news, but that’s beyond the point.

“I’d prefer anarchy,” she muttered, but her tone is still playful. She often held conversation while in cat form, people who didn’t know didn’t believe and in this era, everything was fake. A talking cat? Definitely a trick. “I can tell that you are.” Yet she purred with pleasure as she leaned into his hand.

“Boredom is inescapable, darling.” Not entirely true; many of the old ones seemed awfully entertained… they found new purpose and that seemed to give them new life. Bast did not look for a purpose – humans adored cats – she was fairly well off. “Charm and wit? Of course.” The cat could not laugh as a human would, but she did her best. “It’s been so long since we spoke… Perhaps I wanted to see if you were still around?”

She was from long before BC, and time was not the same for creatures that old. He’d know. But lately, their kind dropped dead like flies… Pun only a little intended.

     The fact that she was speaking as a feline certainly didn’t bother him, nor did it even so much as disturb his employees, both of whom were not quite what they seemed to be either. If any patrons around them did take notice, then, well, this is the city that features many an odd sight already. They’d get over it. Or maybe they won’t. And, oh, it would be such a shame for any mortal to acknowledge the presence of something beyond what they were used to in this age. Utterly tragic. “Sure you do.”       Setting his free hand on the counter with fingers splayed, he leaned to that side heavily, tilting his perspective of her as she spoke. “Don’t I know it.” Granted, having a bar with essentially no rules in it did often offer some form of entertainment on its own.       As for him, there had never truly been much acknowledgement of who or what he was, therefore he didn’t seem to need it quite as much as some others. And he has this place. People here knew his name, though many of them were blind to his nature. “Well, here I am.” His fingers continued to scratch at the underside of her feline chin as he leaned closer, voice lowered. “As long as people continue to follow their own nature, I will still be around. You wouldn’t happen to have word of any that aren’t, though, would you?” While most others didn’t often pay all too much attention to him, he’d be a fool not to be conscious of them in some form.

     He tapped the top of the blackened cigarette, spilling ashes into the trap below, not yet acknowledging her words - or her - for a moment or two. It wasn’t until he brought it back to his lips did he turn his head and properly look at her, though a response still didn’t come just yet. He was no stranger to silence, nor did he lack for time, after all.     Finally, he pulled the cigarette away to exhale smoke with every word, expression as of yet unchanged. “You might be one of the last people I would expect to hear that from.” One arm crosses over his chest, opposite elbow coming to rest on it while he seemed to study her form briefly. “Which prompts me to ask what you mean. And why.”

As the goddess of the Rising Sun felt her paws leave the counter, only to float in the air for a brief moment, she meowed again, her words – “asshole” – barely hidden under the sound. She is displeased with being manhandled this way. However, as Fly places her with much gentleness down on the carboard, she immediately came to terms with her fate.

Cats liked boxes when they were stressed. Boxes were safe, a camouflage, an enclosed space where they could observe their surroundings. The cat goddess wasn’t stressed, far from, really. She decided not to claw at Fly’s fingers as punishment as she actually found the situation amusing. When she had visited as another cat, the box had been placed for her instead of throwing her out (what do cats like? Boxes? Give it a box then), and that was fine with her. Whoever added asshole on the side was a dick though.

He at least had the decency to keep petting her, and she purred a little. Well in the box she wasn’t visible for anyone not leaning over the edge to look at her. “Are you pleased with yourself?” she asked, her rough voice conveying the amusement.

     Just as her word was barely hidden, so was the hint of a smirk on his lips that was present for not a moment or two and no longer. Regardless of whatever her opinions on the arrangement were, she didn’t seem to be trying to hop out of it either. Score one. Cats like boxes. Even cat goddesses like boxes. Which, in it’s own right, was probably laughable, but hey. He’s not judging.       “My house, my rules.” There’s a bit of irony in there, considering the fact that there is oft a misconception about this place that it does not have any rules at all. There is one, but it is not that.      His hand moved from scratching behind her ears to one side of her face and then down under her chin while his eyes traveled to the rest of the room briefly. “Just a little bit.” No one really seemed to be paying that much attention, and he didn’t particularly care, so he turned his attention more fully back to her. No one would really care if he were talking to the cat anyway. Just the return might seem a little strange. “To what do I owe the pleasure, hm? Getting bored? Not enough people offering you milk in a saucer, so you came to try your luck here? You just miss my charm and wit?”

Her little chin is raised, her ears perked up, her focus was on him, but that did not mean that she would do what he said. If it was possible for a cat to grin, then that was what she did, tail now sweeping the counter to take up even more of his space. It is not that she’s missed him, or that she is overjoyed to have found him, but familiar is always somewhat comfortable. Stretching, neck longer to get closer, she leans towards his face and another meow escapes her, feathery soft as she blinks at him, paws gently kneading his thigh. I’m here, now care for me.

     The last thing that he expected was for the cat to actually listen to him when he told her to get off of the counter. All he did when the feline grinned in his direction and didn’t seem to listen to or care about what he said was narrow his gaze on her.       He remained that way as she stretched forward, closer to him, right up until she meows, at which point he offers a snort in response, somewhere between derision and amusement. “Fine.”       Left hand goes towards her head to scratch behind the cat’s ears while he leans over to the opposite side, reaching down to grab something from behind ( or under? ) the counter. Whatever it is, he grabs it and pulls it up in the same instant that his other hand moves from petting her to looping under her soft belly to lift up the cat.       Moving his legs to sit cross-legged on the end of the counter, he slides a box underneath where she’d previously been sitting before he gently places her back on her feet inside it. “See if I care, you little asshole.”       Seems the cat’s been here at least once before, considering the box has already been labeled with ‘Cat Asshole’ on one of the sides. Hilarious.      At least at this point he’d actually continue to pet her rather than go back to ignoring her presence.
