Host, Bob Carroll, interviews PSLC Consultant and former UAW Local 174 President, Doug Grima and discusses the UAW/GM Strike and the reality of strikes that he went through as a President of UAW Local. Doug discusses the hardships and the strategic planning that goes on behind the scenes of a strike. This interview was recorded on 10/15/2019. On 10/16/2019 it was announced that the UAW and GM came to a tentative agreement. As of the time of the posting of this video we are unsure if workers will return to work while the official vote by the members takes place but we wish both GM and the workers the best as they close this chapter of yet another mess - a STRIKE!

ETHICS IN CONSULTING AND BUSINESS
I was reading an article about certain labor consultants with, let’s say, questionable pasts. It is so important that before you hire a labor or employee relations consulting firm that you know them, trust them and are ready to work hard to accomplish your goals.
This article was a tad disheartening because a few of the consultants mentioned spent a brief stint at our firm. It was a lesson that we learned, that we can’t just talk the talk about maintaining the highest level of ethics but make it a firm expectation. There is a reason those mentioned in the article no longer work here and we became 1000x more careful with our background checks. There is also a reason we have all consultants read and sign an ethics agreement before working any project on our team. To be clear, not everyone in our field is dishonest or lives a life with questionable behaviors. It’s the few that make the news and potentially ruin the reputation of our industry.
Everybody doing the hiring should do a thorough background check. Sadly, way too many workers pass through our clients doors because they are laxed on their background checks or even worse don’t bother because they are so in need of help to retain their client base. This is a big mistake.
Take the time to vet potential candidates. I know it can be hard when you are in a pinch and the clients are asking every day if you will meet their deadlines. But, if you have the right talent that fits your unique work culture and you can see them staying long term as a productive member of the team you will be much better off in the long run. I dare say it is almost unethical to yourself as a leader, person in charge of hiring and the employees alike who suffer when you don’t take the steps to surround yourself with people that can clearly see your mission and vision and be part of solutions to improve your productivity or service.
What is Employee Relations Words of Wisdom
Some major road projects throughout Michigan were put on hold Wednesday morning after 200 heavy-machine operators went on strike over what they call unfair labor practices. The workers are represented by Bloomfield-Hills based Operating Engineers 324 and work for Indiana-based Rieth-Riley…
GREAT....When are we going to “Fix OUR DAMN ROADS” - that was our governors campaign slogan. And a big shout out to unions for giving me the excuse to travel detours in parts of Michigan I have yet to venture into:)
