This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

A real human heart
It’s easy for us to dehumanize cadavers. For a lot of people, that’s the only way to remove yourself enough to pick through the cadavers for a minimum of eight hours per week. But the other day I was studying the heart and just stopped to appreciate that I was holding the thing that was once one of the most absolutely vital parts of a person. It beat fast when he was scared or excited, or maybe before his first kiss.
That sudden humanity that came from such a small object in such a sterilized academic environment hit me like a wave and I had to step back and look at the man whose spine we could easily see where his lungs used to be. I hadn’t realized the extent to which I had been dehumanizing him in order to be human myself. It’s crazy. And I’m sorry, I don’t have some deep meaningful conclusion. This, like all of my other posts, has simply been an outlet for reflection. Maybe I’ll try to think of him as more of a person in the future. Or maybe I’ll slip back into complacency so I can have a conversation about silly meaningless stuff and pass time. In reality, I’ll probably do both. But I hope I can do more of the former.
I’ve found that the more we cut, the less human our cadaver looks, and the easier it is to dissociate. I was not prepared for how violent dissection is. I was prepared for it to be “gross”, of course, but not violent. I never pictured myself literally sawing someone’s face in half. It is fascinating, but gruesome. I’ve found the less I think about what I’m doing, the easier it is. It hits me at the strangest times, though. My cadaver has a tattoo. Sometimes I catch myself staring at it while my group mates are dissecting. I wonder what it meant, the type of person my cadaver was, what led her to getting that particular tattoo, etc. Oddly enough, at times it seems the most human thing about her.
And her skin. I’m always imagining her hand being held, or her being embraced by someone who loved her.

This is the strange way of the world, that people who simply want to love are instead forced to become warriors.

I love seeing these things, don’t you
I need this every day and I hope it helps my followers too.
Hope your day is a bit brighter with these stories.
It’s funny how you can forget everything except people loving you. Maybe that’s why humans find it so hard getting over love affairs. It’s not the pain they’re getting over, it’s the love.
