Pag-usara (1922) - an excerpt Vicente Ranudo (1882-1930) is an enigma in Philippine literature. Considered the poet laureate of Cebuano Literature, he is also the briefest great poet in this language and perhaps in Philippine literature itself. Only a few specimens of his writings have survived and his reputation rests on only two poems (of three poems extant): the 56-line Hikalimtan? ("Forgotten?" 1906) and the 60-line Pag-usara ("Solitude," 1922), the most popular poems in Cebuano. The enigma lies in part in the spareness of his known work, the brevity of his life, and his association with early twentieth-century mysticism.
