I missed the actual date but still wanted to draw for the birthday. This is how I picture TR community. Yeah being nice is cool and all, but fighting out of love for one another strengthens bonds better than anything. Like one of those cheesy flicks where two characters have nothing but pure hatred for each other and by the end, they became bff’s.

I honestly don’t know. Haven’t even watch the second season yet..rip.

But a friend of mine( @malaysianpeanut ) did worked on the series, so maybe she’ll have a better answer.

I am playing through Angel of Darkness and so far it’s a very clunky game, but it’s nowhere near the disaster that I was led to believe.  The controls are bad, but they’re not that much worse than the other five Tomb Raiders.  The time-sensitive bits I’ve done so far (escaping an apartmet building filling up with tear gas, for example) were annoying but no worse than in the other TR games.  Combat is… the same, the stealth is not as horrible as I feared (…yet)… really the game isn’t as bad as its reputation.  Of course, I’m still early in the game.  I haven’t exactly done any tomb raiding yet, but I’m sure things will pick up.  So far Lara has just been running from the popo in Paris.

One new thing is you can pick Lara’s responses in dialogue with other characters, and you can make her a real biotch if you want (I reloaded a save after I took that screenshot and picked something less a-hole-y to say, for the record).  I am not really a fan of the RPG mechanic, where Lara will occasionally look at a huge jump or something and say “I’m not strong enough,” requiring the player to find some heavy block to push or some other action to build up her arm or leg strength.  But, I can’t fault CORE for wanting to do something new after making the same game five times as EIDOS cracked the whip (or so I heard).

Just like when I played TR5, I’ll go into TRAOD with an open mind.  I already paid for the game, I might as well try to enjoy it.

Thank you so much for giving this game a chance. And yes I agree you do have to approach it with an open mind. It’s flawed but people were too harsh on it to the point where everyone just jumping on the hate wagon just because.

I’m glad you are really open to some of the things it was trying to do. To me, it was something I admire back in the day, and I still do today.

Watching videos like these makes me ache for AoD’s success even more. The primary reason for it was greedy publishers with their kicks for heavy monetization and rushing to release games in an unfinished state to please stock holders. It’s a recurring thing going that you’d have to live under a rock to not know about it.

However, No Man’s Sky got a second chance and were able to win back their audience and more, Fallout New Vegas buggy launch didn’t stop the dev from fixing it. And even Bioware were given a pass to create a new game after what happened to Mass Effect Andromeda and still they kept going with Anthem when everyone knows that game is basically dead. These particular few gets a second chance in life while AoD, OG Lara and Core Design were left to rot by Eidos, ripped it’s precious baby from their hands and giving it over to some yanks(a rather dramatized analogy but that’s how it felt to me)

“It’s fine, we’ll fix it in post.”

A saying errors made in movies that they will eventually be fixed later in post production shows poor planning and lack of care on the director’s side. Bad things will often overshadows good things especially when it sticks out. So it’s quite understandable when some fans aren’t interested in let’s say AoD sequel, remake or anything that has to do with AoD because it reminded them of how rough it was in 2003. Multiple patches were released in attempt to fix the game but “You can change people’s memories.”

Reboot rant

I’ll never understand how the reboot tomb raider games are generally considered “enjoyable” games or good games. What’s enjoyable abt cutscenes or scripted events every two minutes, bland (often greyish) environments, Laraboot constantly falling on her ass or shooting dudes (fighting mechanics are not even that good). Boring puzzles, optional tombs, lack of traps (the ones present are easily avoidable). It’s a shooter game and an average one at that. These games are average at best. I don’t understand the “don’t get me wrong I think the reboots are good games” statements from classic TR fans. Even if you take them as their own game outside of the classic they’re terrible. I want to erase their existence from this world and from my mind.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinions but regardless of what you think of the reboots the fact of the matter is that they have no legitimate reason to have been called tomb raider (and the protag lara croft). Greediness at its best

As a classic fan, I’m one of those who said “reboot games are fine” lol.

But there’s a huge ‘BUT’ when I say it. It’s fine in the sense of a AAA genre which doesn’t mean much because of how generic and bland most of them are so the “reboot would fit right in” was how I see it you know? It was made to appeal to as much audience as possible so ‘handicapping’ the players with difficult puzzles and zero hand holding would turn off alot of people, hence making it easier just to sell the story(which was done poorly imo). But that’s not saying people don’t want challenge, hell, one of the most beloved franchise was built on the foundation of frustratingly challenging difficulty, so yeah. There’s was no reason to remove challenge in TR in the first place other than to appeal to more people by making things incredibly casual. It’s impossible to not know what to do when the game basically plays on it’s own. Even just you standing for a few second trying to figure out the next step she’ll run her mouth. It’s insulting. Let me figure it out myself! Geez...I’m getting riled up just talking about the gameplay...

Anyway, in terms of uniqueness, yeah....reboot’s got none. Not the gameplay, not the set piece and especially not the story, ironically.

If I were to compare it with it’s predecessors, it’s a horrible ‘adaptation’ and bastardization of once an icon of female video game character. If it’s with how female characters are written these days, I’m a bit more lax with the interpretation like “Yeah....sure. She’s...she’s there...or something.” I honestly don’t have much to say because that’s how much I care for the character. It’s one of those who are written to be broken as to be relatable and the endless constant self guilt was really tiring. I didn’t like how they are trying to pass the character off as “This is the real deal”. It scares me a little just thinking about it that the reboot series will continue forever and the [conspiracy of] erasing of the queen of retro gaming will be true.

But whatever...some people like the reboots and hey, great for them. Different strokes for different folks. We’ll probably won’t be getting OG Lara back but I gave up on the franchise and have made peace with it.

there's a part of me thats really grateful that AOD kinda flopped and became a small niche fandom because I wouldnt want certain reboot fans anywhere near AOD lmao, we can have it for ourselves if they don't want it.

No offense, but that’s a very selfish and childish way to think in my humble opinion, anon. Not only because AOD didn’t flop - despite the first installment of the trilogy being incomplete because of a pressured schedule by Eidos, the game sold very well and Core Design were commanded to work on the sequels plus other spin off games, and their development was pretty solid before Eidos canned them and transferred the franchise to Crystal Dynamics - but also, if that not being happened, TRAOD trilogy being completed and the franchise remained with Core Design, we wouldn’t have probably any reboot by now and the fans would be more united and not always fighting over this disaster. I’d have preferred that scenario than the current one, for sure, if anything, for Lara’s sake, who deserved much better than this mess.

I can understand where op is coming from. AoD is consider a cult classic for a good reason. Those who enjoy the game love it to death. And I’m ok with that, but it is an absolute shame that because of some mishap from both Eidos and Core’s side, Core didn’t get a second chance and the classic era ends there, ripped from their hands because of greed.

Instead of putting the franchise to rest or take some time to rethink about what to do after AoD’s downfall. What did they do? Sold the franchise to crystal in such short time frame. They didn’t even let the franchise breathe for a little bit. It boggles my mind how can a successful publisher go bankrupt with a money maker like TR and Lara Croft...

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go angrily sob in the corner.

I hate how every sculpting video is like, “Use the lowest resolution for blocking and pump it up later for detailing.” then proceed to use the lowest res for blocking out shapes and have the smoothest looking blob. When I do that it’s like the mesh is having a stroke with all the vertices looking all janky.

Also, I never realize a certain someone has a really attractive button nose.

Classic Lara - Clara

Clara is a cat.

She likes what she likes and doesn’t care much about anything.

She can follow instructions, she just chose not to.

She also knows tricks but only does it when you’re not watching.

Despite being a cat, she can be affectionate towards people she trusts.

She has her own playground modified with tubes, walkways and cat scratchers.

LAU Lara - Laura

Laura is a hollywood stunt dog.

She does tricks on command but only if you give her proper instructions.

She’s well trained and very athletic.

She has a secret passcode to trigger her into aggression mode.

She used to be friends with the neighbour’s chihuahua but something happened to her that made her not recognize Laura’s scent.

She is friends with a parrot named Al and a rat named Zoom.

Survivor - Boots

Boots is a Golden Retriever.

She loves talking long walks at the park.

She can be quite clumsy but she usually gets up without a scratch.

She is precious.

She can be erratic at times and can be very aggressive and over protective, so be careful.

She has a stuffed bunny called Sammy and is bff with a brick named Jonjon.

I thought these animals sum up each version’s traits perfectly. Like Classic Lara who does her own thing just like a cat does. LAUra being a pitbull stunt dog just like in movies with dog stars. I wanted to make her as German Shepard but it’s too common and more likely a security dog which doesn’t really suit LAU imo. And reboot as a golden retriever, because...idk, I thought she’d be perfect as a golden retriever. Everybody loves a retriever, and everybody should love her...for...reasons. Also her being friends with a brick was a reference to a dog who’s best friend is an actual piece of brick. Thought it was cute in an odd way.

I know it's already 2019 and it's been 16 years but this is friendly reminder that Square Enix is very much allowed to remake tr AOD or develop its deserved sequel :'3

I am so happy that fans are still interested in AOD and that it did not fall into a pit of oblivion.

But remake by Square/Crystal/Eidos? I'd rather not! I am really glad they have no interest in AOD from the very beginning. They have never cared for who real Lara was, they didn’t know what TR games were about which they have proven with the interviews and games.

Honestly, can you imagine what they would have made from her and the plot? They would reduce her to another woman with trauma leading her actions. The mommy-daddy issues would have been implemented because they cannot create a woman without parent's influence. Or maybe, they would include another family member - Karel could be Lara’s uncle, whoooah. She would have moaned and cried over Werner’s dead body. She would have questioned every of her step. And I won’t even start to express my deepest nightmares about their way of expressing the perfect chemistry between Lara and Kurtis we had in AoD. Their intention would have been to make the game ‘more realistic’. Yet only in the visual side! And that effort would have taken quite some time to fulfill so logically, some aspects of the game would have been ripped off. One in particular: Lara’s personality. Which we can see in current games.

I want only original developers and writers to do a remake because only they have the right to do so. Moreover, we already got one remake right? And let me say, it was not a good one.

I’m one of those who’s pretty optimistic when it comes to ideas. I’d love for a continuation of AoD that includes it’s already established characters, story and theme. I desperately want to see it being realized in a full fledged game. It would be a dream!

But as we all know, as long as the TR franchise is in the clutches of Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, I have 0 hope that they’d stay true to it’s original ideas, let alone the lead protagonist they constantly rebooting, not once but twice. Thrice if you count the spin offs.

Wanting the original developers to develop it is quite the wishful thinking. However, it is highly possible to have them as consultants.

So yeah, I’m 50/50 on the matter. Yes 100% if they outsource to a more competent developer who understands what needs to be done without butchering the groundworks that have already been laid out by the original writer(Murti Schofield). Other than that, they can keep their mitts off of AoD if their goal is to ‘change‘ to suit their overly selfinflated ‘vision’.

When he is totally fired up using all three Shards he becomes almost pure power (or is this too much? Probably.). In specially controlled situations Lara can merge with Kurtis and make use of his forcefield, wearing it like a suit.“ 

So a little while ago, @seethem-dancing suggested this:

Firstly, thank you very much, for both the congratulations and the compliments! I had a hard time trying to create this idea with the models, as I had a very specific idea of what I wanted but had no idea to go about it. In the end, I technically cheated and used a different route than I wanted, but it all worked out.

In this particular render, I only really demonstrated Lara using his power as a forcefield, as opposed to portraying his “pure power.” Originally I was going to do both, but there was too much light in the frame and everything was clashing, so I figured giving our foreground character the focus would be better. I hope you like it!

Moonlight is probably my favourite track so I decided to animate it. This is just a very rough animatic choppily put together. The only thing final is the camera.

Notes: the white circle is a torchlight waved around by a guard from the other side of the same door…Lara is hiding from him next to the bin.

I’m trying to stay true to the game so most of the references I used are from there.

- The best part about the music is the amazing audio queue. I just add the sound effects and it matches perfectly with the suspense and anticipation the music provides. In a way, the music is the director ;)

@lady-trent I have alot of things going on in my head and I haven’t gotten around doing 3d stuff for a long while now. The ever expanding Vault Double U-Eye-Pea surely needs some cleaning heh.

Regarding this project, well...it’s currently put on shelf for now but will definitely pick it up again. Don’t hold your breath for it though since it would take forever as I’m very meticulous with how I work.

These things break rather easily and I can tell you how many times it broke or don’t go your way. It can be quite demotivating and I apologize for the hiatus.

The widescreen render was better imo but I guess I was thinking of a more expressive pose...idk.

Alas, I suck at perspective and lighting...rip. Also, I have no idea Kurtis’ canon height.
